I was never in the service, but used to work in a surplus store. The troops would come back from Iraq and Afghanistan in waves. Having fun. They loved this one MRE we sold. Think it was the Colorado omelette. Green bag. These jokers would pay 30$ for that MRE. And only that one. Meanwhile InAndOut Burgers was right down the block. 6$ for a double double combo

Wow, all of these are probably like E4 and below situations but the Tik Toks I related to the most was getting the special treat in an MRE because in the Army at least, there were the crowd favorites that everyone snatched first from a shipment and the unpopular meals that just sat there and were the only option if you were actually out on patrol and not just a POG or something. So getting something the jalapeno cheddar cheese spread was a definite boost to morale after sufferings through a week of vegetarian or worse, an egg based MRE. I also related to the dueling ones as we had an unofficial fight club when I was in and no hits to the face but body blows were ok and we bare knuckle boxed each other. Also relate to there always being at least one eff-up who would screw something up and get the entire unit's weekend leave privilege taken away. Good times in the Army and military in general. :)

I was "fortunate" (or unfortunate!) in that I was exposed to the 1st three generations of Meals Rejected by Ethiopians! The first gen were TERRIBLE! The second were better, but kinda sparse on the snacks & condiments. The third gen were lots better, having stuff like what you would get out of a can in a store! Chicken a la King, Beef Stew, Chili Mac, and the breakfast ones weren't too bad either! I still have several of those little bottles of Tabasco sauce as souvenirs! (Oh, those tough pouches the MRE's came in were great when you needed to take a dump & couldn't go to a latrine! Oddly enough, they kept that same little packet of "John Wayne toilet paper" in all three generations! 🤣🤪)

When a platoon from 3rd Tracs at Camp Pendleton came back from a WESTPAC back in the early 80’s. Said Marines were celebrating their homecoming (on top of the Barracks). The next morning (Saturday) the Battalion CO came through the area checking on how many Amtracers he could hold Office Hours for. Our Barracks was next to Battalion HQ. Several of the guys brought back crossbows from the P I and the Colonel found half a dozen seagulls “pinned”to the ground and palm trees! He had everybody still in the Barracks out side reaming us and waiting for the First Sergeant to get there! Fortunately I had gotten off duty and took all the crossbows and related materials and took them back to my apartment to secure them. All of us on duty got reamed the worst,”YOU PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THIS CRAP!” I got chewed out by the Gunny for telling the Colonel, “We didn’t hear them because crossbows are stealthy weapons! Sir!” After the Gunny finished, he laughed and told me to go back home to my wife!

Just at sundown as we were setting the watch, eating and bedding down, my buddy comes back to the hooch with some San Miguel beer but we didn't have a bottle opener. Then I remembered a trick my grandpa had done when I was a kid back on the farm in NC. “Who knows if the One who rests under the immense arch,
Adding his own epic glory to the prides of the past,
Is not this foreigner who became son of France,
Not by the blood received but by the blood shed”.
I wish that you can do a video, someday, about the duty we have, the duty to remember and honor the men who gave their life for our democracies.
