The implication from the books that they're all part of some f'd up hallucination is awesome and horrifying.
The theory that they were modeled after what Evan/crying child would have nightmares about (Resulting from his phobia of animatronics), meant to make Mike feel even more guilt over the bite of '83 by making him FEEL like how Evan felt is also really scary to imagine, it's an awful form of psychological torture created by a broken father...
The books and comics have been dropping a bunch of hints that they were real animatronics made to look like monsters through Afton tech. Tbh though, I wish they didn’t do this; it’s much better to leave them as figments of a dying imagination
To be fair, a couple of them still could be, as there's currently no evidence that Nightmare Fredbear or Nightmare have real world versions like the others do in Dittophobia, nor do any of the Halloween animatronics. (before FNAF VR: Help Wanted that is)
I think Matpat describes a pretty good theory, Nd the answer lies with Nightmare. If you look closely, Nightmare is partially transparent, and his jumpscare is completely different from all the other animatronics. This felt significant to me because up to that point, every animatronic from the same game had the same jumpscare sound regardless of what type they were.
In the books, Afton uses audio disks to create the twisted animatronics, so it very possible he's doing the same thing here, and the reason Nightmare is transparent and sounds different is because his audio disk has malfunctioned.

I think they could be from illusion discs William made post bite of 83 to torture Michael with his guilt and showing him what evan’s nightmares of the animatronics were like (with more of a life risking twist)
I think that the nightmares are endos built by William but this guy got kidnapped for testing and William made it look like they are monsters.
Id like to believe that maybe to some degree that theyre some sort of demons that take the form of nightmarish versions of the mascots at freddys and that their purposes are to be some sort of torture device towards something or someone whos done wrong things as implied by some of their ucn voicelines

I think they could be product of illusion discs. If not from mannequins on wheels, then from other animatronics (I personally think unwithereds).
We know they could be illusion, both from books in twisted ones and dittophobia, and games in UCN "this time there is more than illusion..." and "I am remade, but not by you (William)..."
I always stick with Mat Pat’s theory, in the Book series some animatronics have these discs in them that when activated basically make them look horrifying, but aren’t actually, that’s what I feel like is going on here.
The nightmare animatronics aren't real because they are NIGHTMARE animatronics and it would make sense because the NIGHTMARE animatronics exist in the crying child's control because the crying child was bit by fredbear in his head which caused the crying child to wake up in a coma

The theory I heard is that they are real animatronics, but William put an Illusion disc on them, thus why they look the way they do. They are normal animatronics, but the disc changes their appearance

I mean, they could be both real animatronics and actual nightmares at the same time? Aftons own children could have been apart of or saw the experiments shown in Dittophobia.
If they saw or were part of them, FNAF 4 itself, could have been an actual nightmare.
It's implied, as while the main 4 nightmares exist in the story, I don't remember Nightmare or Nightmare Fredbear Stand-ins being shown in Dittophobia, so it is plausible that those ones are truly nightmares, though hard to tell currently.
@@TMarionettist the most likely answer is that fnaf 4 IS a nightmare! Considering that Fredbear doesn’t appear until AFTER the bite.

Personally I don't see him as a nightmare as while he has similar features to them, he's usually on his own most of the time, especially in Out of Stock and FNAF AR
