    I recently went to Newfoundland and wanted to see Puffins. I went into a gift shop in Elliston and the man behind the counter didn’t speak like a local, he said he came from the Carolina’s in the USA, he said once he saw puffins,he was hooked and now spends months in Newfoundland taking really great pictures. He has an interest in puffins, like Dani has with squirrels.

    When I was young, my family couldn't afford travelling during the winter because then it's more expensive, so I've spent all my childhood winters in the darkness of Swedish winter. So even though I'm a bit sad to see you go and I just found your channel this morning, I completely understand. Also the big delay in getting your application for residency reviewed is of course annoying, it might be a result of Sweden accepting so many immegrants, not sure. Hope to see you return in a few months, it's so nice to see a professional photographer in the environment I'm shooting in, struggling with similar kinds of issues, and enjoying similar wildlife.

    Fun fact about the bird you photographed at 3:26 is called a Nötväcka (Nuthatch) and is the only bird in Sweden that can run both upwards and downwards a tree meanwhile a woodpecker can only run upwards a tree.

    You have worked hard to make the best of difficult conditions for squirrel photography - you can only shoot what’s there! You’ve broadened your target species to keep your creative mind active - important. Given that you must leave Sweden for a while this will allow you to shoot in other environments - positive benefits! It seems unlikely that you’ll have to wait so long for Swedish immigration to allow you to stay longer.
    I think you’ll do well on your return there with recharged batteries (literally) and hopefully returned squirrels too. Your videos are extremely well produced and I look forward to the next one. Enjoy your time here and keep up your inspiring work!

    That bright red jacket can definitely be one major factor. Species have evolved to be frightened of bright colors. Most poisonous snakes and insects have these colors and patterns.
    What is even worse? That bright colors with fur around it.
    There are many studies done about why squirrels do not like red. They particularly hate woodpeckers for this reason.
    There are also squirrel deterrents that use fake red woodpeckers.

    • @snap-n-shoot
      @snap-n-shoot 2 года назад +7

      A bit of a myth around colour in animals. Just like Red to a Bull, its wrong. The bright colours in animals as a warning is a different colour to us that what the animals see. Mainly Ultraviolet and the pattern will be totally different to other animals. They do not see red, or any other colour as we do. Almost all animals, apart from humans are almost colour blind. Humans have 3 cone receptors Red Green Blue. So we can distinguish almost all colours in that range except Ultraviolet and Infrared, as we evolved filters in our eyes, but even in humans it can be different. Most animals have 2 cones Red and Green. Squirrels, cannot tell the difference between Red and Green, but, Can tell the difference between Red and Green, and other colours. Same with dogs and cats.... and bulls. Hunters in the US use a colour on their camo gear called Blaze Orange. To u is is bright orange but to deer and other animals it is a green/brown colour. The orange is used so other hunters can see each other from safety and has no effect on deer. When photographing Raptors, do not wear blue, as these birds have extra cones than can see in the Ultraviolet and blue will light up like being in a nightclub with blacklight. Thats why they can see Carrion miles away. Its like a lit up beacon to them. Deer also see in Ultraviolet so do not wear blue. So it depends on what you are photographing, as to the clothes or colours you should have on to be successful. Its important to have some knowledge of this when you photographing to get more success.

      @@snap-n-shoot The studies they have done is not based on if they CAN see red the way we do. Rather, it's about them staying away from it no matter what the shade actually looks like to them. To us it's red. To them it could be crap brown for all we know.
      But it's not just red of course. Other colors have similar effects on wildlife. Each effected by a different pattern or scale to the color.
      This also works as an attraction to bring animals in. Along with sound and smell with hunting equipment. Whole different topic.

      What I find funny is in her thumbnail she has the camo lense, then later she has that bright red jacket. lol

    Dani, I'm sorry to hear you've already returned to the UK. However, I do believe you are fully eligible for your residency based on you being here before the end of the transition period, as long as you applied before the end of December 2021. Assuming you did apply on time, the longest Migrationsverket will take to complete the application is 6 months and one day, during which time, you have the same rights under the Brexit agreement as we had before 31st December 2020, including the right to remain and work until a decision has been made. Even without the Article 50 option, you'll likely have a sufficient income to meet the needs for a visa.
    As for your home here, keep it if you can, utilities and internet are rather simple to sort out normally, it's the bloody banks and Skatteverket that are the issue here.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @DaniConnorWild
      @DaniConnorWild  2 года назад +17

      Thank you David. We applied in October 2021 and according to Migration website, they type of application we’ve applied for will take 29 months. I hope that’s the very very maximum rather than the realistic time it takes to receive an answer. I also didn’t apply for a post Brexit residency, I applied for a self employed residency. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens!

    • @DavidinLapland
      @DavidinLapland 2 года назад +10

      @@DaniConnorWild It's a shame you didn't apply for your Article 50 rights, but I do think you'd be best contacting your case handler (if they've given you one yet) and ask if you can change your application. There are ways to change your standard application to Article 50 in extenuating circumstances which you clearly meet.
      There's no reason I can see that you can be denied a Brexit based residency, and your self employed status will cement that argument.
      Do let me know how you get on, I'd be pleased to help in any way I can.

    Hello Dani, as for one of your questions: An extremely nice place to continue the adventure of your photography might be the Wadden Sea, with its islands, beaches, dunes, and banks that become spontaneous islands when the tide is low.
    It's situated in the North of the Netherlands, the North-West of Germany, and the South-West of Denmark. The Dutch part is the best-preserved part of the area so far.
    It's an international node for migrating birds from all over the Northern and partially even Southern hemisphere. One can expect to see a huge variety of them, feeding before they go back to Siberia, or lands North of the Polar Circle, and to several other areas of the world. The tidal shallow water is extremely rich in seaweeds and little animals that birds feed on. And of course, there are the different sorts of seals and their kids, lazily resting in the sun on one of the ever-moving banks, when the tide is low. Considering your skilled way of capturing the beauty of animals this must be sort of a paradise to you, and to those who watch your photos and videos. (Sorry for bad English, I'm not a native speaker).

    I have the same situation here up in Northern Norway. I haven't seen the squirrel for some weeks now. When it's cold and bad weather the squirrel spends much time in it's den where it's warm and cosy. The squirrel just leave it's den when it needs more nuts. It will also pick up the nuts which the squirrel hide close to the den.

    "My last photography adventures?" For now, right? It is what it is.
    You have a house there in Sweden and, that is a good step toward having a really cool home base. Who knows what the squirrels are up too. They're squirrels. They are by definition... squirrelly. You'll figure the little buggers out. Good photos to come!!
    Check out Temagami in Ontario, Canada.

    I think living in such a place leaves a lot of time to think about yourself. I had friends who lived in Sweden and Finland for several years. they often told me that the routine and the way of living the days was completely different. Magical and alien !

    Excellent suff. What a wonderful video. Even the music is pleasant, unlike many other RUclips videos done by others. This girl cares, which is why every detail matters. I must criticize the patching together of clips that can be annoying, but that may be unavoidable considering the content and it not being continuous. It is sometimes better to make a clean break, as if it is a new thing instead of trying to make it one long video.i just realized how long my critique is of something undeserving of mire than a quick and dirty comment. Gréât vidéo. It made me mellow for the rest of the day, here in Montreal, Quebec where there is frozen snow on the ground and temperatures are around -20C. I love that crunch sound of boots on very cold snow. Not all snow on the ground is the same. Often it has a layer of ice on top to make walking a challenge.
    I use a canon m50 with various lenses and filters and adapters. I am an amateur videographer. Boy would it be fun to hang out with you to learn from you. I am 70 and I find that I learn much more from young people because they are sharp and clear headed. I just bought a drone with camera that has a 3 axis gimbal and takes 4K video and photos. It flies in cold weather as long as the battery is warm before taking off. Do you use a drone? I was going to get a semi professional drone until I discovered the DJI mini 2 that is way less expensive but has all the mist important features.

    Even if you did not get the squirrels the bird shots were amazing and the drone shots out of this world. I believe that red squirrels are active in winter? ( which I am sure you know) but they do not hibernate but remain active all year, although they may remain sheltered in one spot for a few days during harsh weather. So seeing them in the trees, they are eating the cones and they do have quiet a stash of food in their den is why I reckon they are not coming down to get the seeds in the pot. Most frustrating I do agree Dani. I hope you do go back to Sweden it is very beautiful. I wish you the very best of luck in the UK with your new project. I love your photography and I am amazed at what depth you go to to try and capture them. You are an inspiration to me. I just got a camera for Christmas last year and though I love photography am trying to understand how to use it. Thank you for sharing your photo and journey and I can not tell you how it has helped through these hard times.

    Happened to stumble over your videos 2 days ago. Stunning photos and videos! And a very interesting passion! About the house. I do not know your story and I don't want to be mean, but it is always a good idea to buy a house (or migrate) in a place to which you can relate (born and raised, au pair, traveled there etc.) and know at least some of the culture, including the language. Otherwise, the cultural shock (which, according to what you said in the video, is what you probably experienced) will be hard. Also, people, who are used to or grew up like that (no internet, few people, hard physical work outside) will find it easier to get used to than people who don't.

      I’d previously lived in Sweden for 8 months in 2020. As a wildlife photographer, I’m used to walking miles and carrying heavy loads so physical work is also not an issue. In regards to the internet, our village has excellent internet access but fibre has to be set up in summer when the ground isn’t frozen as it’s wired under ground to the house. We were supposed to go to the house last summer but we had to wait 5 months due to the travel ban into Sweden due to covid. The struggles we had can be easily fixed and we’ll be heading back in Spring to prepare the house.

    I don't know where you stayed in the north, I,m living in Jokkmokk just above the arctic circle and here are loads of squirrels. I live on the edge of the town and my neighbour lives 150 meters further just at the beginning of the forest, she feeds birds, I pass their place 3 times a day when I go walking with my dog and 8 out of 10 times I see squirrels, they love their peanuts too.
    edit 2 km from the centre of town there is a beaver hut.
