The best way to figure out how expensive a given faction is is to first ask how said faction is being played. Yeah. I don't think you would win with 2 stompas as a majority of your Ork list. You might have a lot of fun with a 30 model Ork army that's made from 6 boxes, but you're probably not going to win a lot.

It's the relative pricing between the units that's an issue. I don't mind paying more for characters, special units and centrepiece kits. But the core troops are too expensive. It'd be great if there were bulk boxes like currently the Old World has where you can just buy multiple core units in bulk for a bargain.

I would like to point at with 3d printers and anyone looking to get one; the availability and ease in which you will be able to find models and basically print out an army varies very wildly depending on the faction you want to play. Starting to get into 40k after collecting for a few months and my goal right now is to do 1k point games. I'd rather play faster games on a smaller board for less money. That said, recently I found two old Broadsides for $20 and a team of Crisis suits for $30, add in the cost of new bases and that was around 5 points per dollar. I also got some blue stuff and milliput to duplicate Fire Warrior bodies, got four units of infantry out of two boxes, literally doubling the value.
A lot of the horde armies can have their costs decreased substantially by buying from other manufacturers. Not necessarily _resin_ ones, since you're typically paying close to GW prices in terms of dollars-per-model (though by that score, Character models tend to be far cheaper). But hard plastic kits. Some armies, like Guard or cultist-heavy Chaos lists, could use historical minis, perhaps with some bits kitbashed on to bring them in line with the far future aesthetic. Whereas my perennial favorite, Wargames Atlantic, flat out sells plastic kits meant for Guard (among other armies).
Extra bits from eBay are also good for stretching out kits. Got two Baneblades out of one box (one Baneblade, the other as a swappable Sword variant) from a lucky find on eBay. Since I didn’t feel up to magnetize the kit (and I wanted two anyway), it saved me buying a full second kit without a box full of bits that I couldn’t use. Did the same for a Leman Russ kit, but used bits to kitbash more Russes out of my other Russ kits (now I’ve got 7 out of 3 kits). Creativity and luck saves a bunch of money.

It’s a lot easier to get a cheaper army than you think - Poorhammer did a podcast where they made multiple armies on the cheap more or less as a challenge.
Aussies would pay double the US price in AU. Makes buying or choosing which army you play pretty important. No one want to pour thousands into an army that play mediocre and gets shelved. Looking at you Deathwatch.
you can use the cryptech with some spare warrior legs to make a plasmancer proxy out of the hierotek circle. that box really is great value if you kit bash with warriors!
I play space marines because of their price and aesthetic. 15 year old me thought they looked absolutely bad ass and wanted to collect them. Adult me living on a budget finds that they are a good army to keep up with on a budget in order to stay involved with the community. My army is not competitive but it’s tailored to my personality and I love it.
3d printing has been a game changer for me... Took two boxes of eightbound and stretched those 6 models out to 18 models with some deliberate and strategic planning with all the extra arms/heads/etc that are left on the spue. And I hate the GW chaos spawn sculpt, soooo... printed proxy models that I do like! The printer is an investment but it really does make a huge difference for casual play, saving lots of money in the long run.
Cost is DEFINITELY a factor. So, this needs to start with I don't get to actively play 40k, so on the one hand, I can opt to but the individual model(s) I want, and can paint them up, without the total cost of a complete army, but then on the other, the fact that I don't play takes some of the "need" out, and I have to look at them as simply expensive individual purchases that I am doing just to THEN give myself a project/chore to do later, and then have to figure out where it would sit, without the advantage that "it's useful/does something/let's me play the game". There's definitely a list of hypothetical buys I say I'd love to do, even if just as a collector, with a few painting projects, but their individual prices are the biggest safety feature I have. 😊 If I were going to shell out for am army, it would probably be HCL Necrons, Guard, Grey Knights, SoB, or Thousand Sons, so I'm glad several of those did get covered, but it's maybe too bad none of the lists were one with am auto-include unit that is big, and expensive, the way say Magnus, or Angron, are, and who you MIGHT struggle to get any way other than paying GW foe the privilege.
Anybody looking for a more in-depth video on the prices of each individual faction should look at the Poorhammer Podcast. They did a large video going over all of the data for all of the various factions. And there's even a free spreadsheet that is constantly updated to go along with all of their data.
At first I was no way, but then I remembered I was lifted orks and learned to ebay, recast kitbash and scratchbuild. I was gifted about $200 in 2019 orks, half that space wolf box, a start collecting box, and recently a box of old school boys. Then I think how much I've built and how much I've bought, and I got a really nice 7/8th edition army, maybe it's not bad in 10th. I'll finish painting by 2030.
SM list could be technicaly cheaper for those of us who purchased some SM box sets in last year or so. Christmas box had 3 Jump Intercessors exactly as needed for example. Impulsor was also in multiple Combat Patrols for good value.
I got a Beast Snagga Stampede battle force box. Then picked up another squad of beast Snagga Boyz, squighogs, and Gretchen. A friend of mine sold me a Stompa for $50. All together I'm at 1775 points for under $500.
For Thousand Sons I bought the xmas box two years ago, terminators and Ahriman. Payed like 370€ or something. And for 10th I needed to buy maybe two bigger models, so about 450€? And I just bought sm army. Someone in local mini club sold a painted combat patrol + 1-2 extra charaters + land raider + 3-6 extra eliminators for 100€ (normal cb price is about 110-130€). And rest I bought from EU reseller for 320€. 420 for an army ain't that bad. Pumped the price bit up because the same guy sold me rest of his beaky helmets for 20€ and I bought two raven guard upgrade kits for 20€ each.
my brother started making origami proxies for Tyranids... how much a few sheets of paper costs? (origami of a bugs or different animals as Tyranids - they are often altered to fit better)
im going to keep buying warhammer from market place got a 2000 point death guard army with mortarion and crazy good painted for 200 last week i got a 1500 point necron army for 175 also completely painted
I'm in a weird place where I have pretty much grabbed everything I want for two armies (Imperial Guard and Tyranids) but I keep seeing miniatures I like from other factions. Now I know that if I pick up a few miniatures I like from another faction, I will end up collecting that faction until I have a full army too. So I have to try to use my willpower to avoid taking that first step.
I use to play competitive MTG and the price is pretty similar to some Modern decks. I started collecting Sister for a Crusade I want to run. I have spent [Redacted] and feel afraid cause I have been looking at other armies too an thinking those might be fun to paint.
you'll get much more longevity out of 40k. Power creep isnt really a thing for sisters. half of my army is metal I bought in 2007. All still very relevent units. Immolators, Sereph, rhinos, multimetla sisters and such
My ork army was pretty expensive. But im also running a mechanical ork army. So meganobz, killa kans, deffdreads stuff like that. My emperors children army was expensive also. Only bc i had to custom make my own sonic blasters for my noise marines. I used a lot of green stuff to mold them the way i wanted them. But i can split my EC army up into a Fabius Bile army. Ill use Fabius Bile have a full group of chosen as his body guards. Then ill run as many warp talons and raptors as i can. Ill also run 2 units of bikers. 2 daemon princes without wings bc they will have the mark of slaanesh. Then 2 venom crawlers. Then 2 full units of possessed. Haarken world claimer. Master of executions and 1 unit of havocs with reaper chain cannons. I really only run the havocs if im going up against a horde army. 8 shots times 4 equals 32 shots at strength 5. Thats good enough to take out quite a few nids and orks lol. What cost the most was getting the 4 reaper chain cannons. I hadto buy 4 boxes of legionaries kill team. Which are like 70 bucks each here. But everything else was 60 bucks and under. Besides the daemon princes of course. And buying all those kill team boxes gave me enough to make 30 noise marines. If i can find a pre made sonic blaster online that looks better than the ones i made. Then ill probably end up getting them. I just think that paying 15 bucks for just 5 is a little crazy. Especially when mine look just as good. And no one out there is going to have any that look like mine. I entered into a painting contest. I entered my fabius bile. I won 2nd place. 1st place got to pick from any combat patrol box. 2nd place got to pick anything up to 70 bucks. So sense i got 2nd. I picked some killa kans and sense i had 10 bucks left over. I added 20 more dollars to it and got a box of nobz. 3rd place got 40 dollars in store credit toward warhammer minis.
To admech players; Kastelans are legit now in Cybernetica Cohort, art of war 40k's Richard Siegler did a video on them and almost beat a competitive Ork list with a list of them, two bricks of 4 Kastelans will get you a long way in both points and gameplay in regular tournaments and arguably up to RTT level events, SHC is not necessarily the only way to compete now although it's still out best detachment for sure.
Yeah, the Ork list is leaning really heavily on squighogs, one of our few decently priced kits. If you don't like the Beast Snagga range, good luck building an affordable list without a Stompa
I only started 3 months ago and have nearly 2900 points of SM (over half are painted). Anytime I play someone, they're perplexed on how much I have and I mention how I buy my SM secondhand. I get everything from NIB, NOS, or built and primed off other people for 40-85% off. Got a NIB LR Redeemer for $80 CAD. One set of my Aggressors and Inceptors were 85% off, etc. Never buy from GW directly, at worst I'll get 20% off from a local store if I'm desperate for something. Fuck GW.
If anyone here is interested in seeing more variety on lists like these that can come out even lower price and still have some competitive kick, I've been making these types of videos for about a year now.
Almost the entirety of my 4000 point Tyranid army was bought on ebay for half off... So I spent an amount equal to a down payment on a car instead of the entire car.
And thus, the “Admech are the most expensive army ever” line gains new life. Maybe if Admech GT players learned how to do something besides pushing hordes up the middle of the field and hoping you can’t kill all their models we’d see the more reasonably priced lists.
Im my experience, even in the new dataslate, skitarii are overwhelmingly better than most of their other units. What they need are detachments which don't incentivize Skitarii so heavily. Even with 2 detachments that focus on cult mechanicus they're just not fun
@@miker292 Might I introduce you to the humble Onager Dunecrawler and its Heavy 3 S16 Ap-4 D6+2 Damage main gun? Put her in a good sightline and pop the Protector Imperative and you’re hitting on 2+, wounding anything smaller than a Rhino on 2+ and anything bigger on a 3+, with enough AP to take away most Armor saves, and enough damage to kill a Leman Russ in 1 volley and you’ve got yourself a secure flank. Its got Sustained Hits 1 Heavy Stubbers, a 2+ Save and 4++ Invul, a respectable 11 wounds, and gives Batteline units wholly within 6” a 4++ Invul. Not game breaking to be sure, but it rivals the Gladiator Lancer in many ways. The Lancer is still better, damned thing is undercosted right now due to how poorly the rest of Space Marines are doing, but its closer than you think.
@@wyatttyson7737 Three Dunecrawlers is only 480 points. Nevermind that three has been excessive for most games that I've brought three. To get the most out of them, you want to bring more Skitarii which itself reinforces the "blobs up the board" playstyle. I have a list of 5 leaders, 7 skitarii units, 2 sulphurhound units, 2 dunecrawlers and canis rex. For the use in a 2000pt game, to be clear. There just aren't many good alternatives for Skitarii specifically and their detachment is so much better than the rest that it isn't really a question as to whether or not skitarii blobs are effective.
An addendum to this video, or maybe a sequel, would be comparing it to other hobbies. A lot of my mates play golf and the cost of new clubs and memberships to courses is comparable to playing Warhammer, I believe.
Surprised you didn't mention Thousand Sons, combat patrol is quite good considering nothing in it is completely useless (even tzangoors are useful), that plus a box of scarab terminator, Ahriman and one box of rubrics you already have a good army. I'm not saying is cheap but it seems to me among the best armies, in terms of money, also the models are quite new so they will be good for at least ten years from now

It's crazy how expensive some of these armies are. Over £1,000?! Come on GW. No wonder they're making record profits and thr share prices is going crazy
The difficulty to build and paint is the real cost of any mini. If one mini costs $50 and another costs $100 but the $50 one takes an extra day.. well you could have earnt enough money in that time to far outway the $50 saved.
Biggest issue is when you collect like entire army of minis, paint them and then GW move like half of them into Legends so you cant play them anymore... THIS is fu** depressing
Spend $500 on a good resin printer, UV cure station, wash tank, supplies, and a bunch of resin and just 3D print an army for about $50... and another and another and another. Some of the STL files are BETTER than the GW models too. And while GW will make them take down STL files that are too close to GW models they reappear all the time from different accounts and once you download them they can not stop you from using them.
There are some printers out there that make models that are not so legally distinct. Obviously this is illegal, an infringement of copyright and I would never, ever encourage anyone to buy these models that would pass off as GW miniatures to almost all eyes at a fraction of the cost. However, they do exist.

The correct answer is: too damn much.
The printer is an investment but it really does make a huge difference for casual play, saving lots of money in the long run.
there are very high quality scans of eight bounds out now, if you know where to look.
If I were going to shell out for am army, it would probably be HCL Necrons, Guard, Grey Knights, SoB, or Thousand Sons, so I'm glad several of those did get covered, but it's maybe too bad none of the lists were one with am auto-include unit that is big, and expensive, the way say Magnus, or Angron, are, and who you MIGHT struggle to get any way other than paying GW foe the privilege.
Finished painting by 2030! You are going to be finished faster than I ever will.
@zlboyle90 orks especially goffs are easy to paint. Prime black. Make skin green. Do that 100+ times. You're mostly done once the skin is green.
I got lucky with my admech. I managed to find a string of box sets that made buying for them a bit easier.
(origami of a bugs or different animals as Tyranids - they are often altered to fit better)
im going to keep buying warhammer from market place
got a 2000 point death guard army with mortarion and crazy good painted for 200
last week i got a 1500 point necron army for 175 also completely painted
I'm in a weird place where I have pretty much grabbed everything I want for two armies (Imperial Guard and Tyranids) but I keep seeing miniatures I like from other factions. Now I know that if I pick up a few miniatures I like from another faction, I will end up collecting that faction until I have a full army too. So I have to try to use my willpower to avoid taking that first step.
THats smart. I ended up with several armies I never play that way ;/
I use to play competitive MTG and the price is pretty similar to some Modern decks.
“Hey bro nice DKoK army, all from forgeworld? how much did it cost?”
“Everything 💀”
Almost the entirety of my 4000 point Tyranid army was bought on ebay for half off...
So I spent an amount equal to a down payment on a car instead of the entire car.
Didnt expect grey knights to be so cheap. Would like to know the price of Agents of the Imperium army once that is available
I know this would be very complex, but I think it would be cool to see one of these videos for Meta pay to win at all cost collecting
Bought two admech combat patrols and an ironstrider. Praise be the machine god.
Dont mention Deathwatch... Because it cost me a LOT and now with no RoI to show for it
I'd love to get into admech, even with the cost, but i can't imagine painting them all.
Would be interesting to see the numbers for an Astra Militarum.
If Cadia stands, that's all that matters.
printed 2000pkts of deathguard for ~35€ resin
For the Grey Knights army, does the "interceptors" mean "Stormhawk Interceptor" or "Grey Knights Interceptor Squad"? Thanks!
I've always said GW needs to do a 30% price cut across the board, and watch their customer base triple, and profits grow tremendously over time!
People really need to split boxes such as Levi. Buy for xyz, sell each unit for yxz. Thats how I pay for my army, Sold 18 odd Levi boxes
Have a whole range of world eater STLs here. for 100€ u get 2000p + angron + lord of skulls
Surprised you didn't mention Thousand Sons, combat patrol is quite good considering nothing in it is completely useless (even tzangoors are useful), that plus a box of scarab terminator, Ahriman and one box of rubrics you already have a good army. I'm not saying is cheap but it seems to me among the best armies, in terms of money, also the models are quite new so they will be good for at least ten years from now
Aus price converted off what's on screen :-
Ultramarines list is AUS $1560.80c
Admech list is AUS $ 2292.80c
ORK list is AUS $1541.76c
Chaos Marine list AUS $1508.18c
Imperial Knights list AUS $1212.00c
Necrons list AUS $1488.34c
Grey Knights list AUS$ 844.15
Most codices in AUS $92
mission cards AUS$60
i find that warhammer is kind of an investemnt. because if you paint them semi ok you can usualy get more money then what you put into them. so even if you dont like em you could sell them later and gain a little.
Thank you auspex
I think it just boils down to how horde-y is your army and how much does GW hate you.
I just got really lucky on eBay and got around a thousand points of nids for $125. Got a Wing Hive tyrant, tyrannofex, Trygon, gargoyles warriors gene stealers and termagants
Nice video, can you add more factions?? Btw this video is Without paiting cost??
i was hoping for something on druhkari
Custodes, don't need as many models so costs less, also easy to paint.
Did the Memes from the robbery bring this video on?
They thought about a bank, then thought about a Diamond heist and thought ... forget that cheap stuff, plastic toy soldiers are worth so much more!
lol… Ive bought like 8 boxes of death korps Krieg kill team… ouchy! Some forge world stuff too luckily was able to 3D print on riders and earthshaker and Medusa carriages🤷🏻
It's crazy how expensive some of these armies are. Over £1,000?! Come on GW.
No wonder they're making record profits and thr share prices is going crazy
There is no way Import tariffs are making minis so much more expensive outside of Britain
One kid in my gaming group showed up with an all Lego SM army. Just in Lego cost, it was far cheaper.
Grey knights looking like my next army 😂
The difficulty to build and paint is the real cost of any mini. If one mini costs $50 and another costs $100 but the $50 one takes an extra day.. well you could have earnt enough money in that time to far outway the $50 saved.
When the army with some of the most expensive price floors is also the cheapest
My 2 k list is 2 Custodes combat patrol and canis rex 1995 pts for just over 500$
Ive got my boxes still, my space marine army was 780$
This is why recast is king. Literally less than a third that price easily for the same quantity
From where?
Biggest issue is when you collect like entire army of minis, paint them and then GW move like half of them into Legends so you cant play them anymore... THIS is fu** depressing
Aww, I was hoping for the Custodes to make a joke appearance. (They're the cheapest army by far to collect.)
Now compare it to 3D printers... I mean, I like GW nothing against them. Cool franchise whatever. But there is no comparison point.
I spent less than 400 for like 3k points of necrons. and they came painted and built. ebay and etsy baby 😉
One being 3x the price of another, and 50% more than the next on the list, is completely outrageous lol
about 60 euros for a 2 good quality resin bottles
Good content
I have spent over 1200 on a modern MTG deck... And that's just cardboard. I guess I have no choice buy to get a Blood Angel army. I'd be a fool not too 🤔
Admech are cheap if you only by station forge's scavanger models.
Ohhhh... do LOV! :P
So... what youre telling me is that I went for the most expensive army (in this video) to start off the hobby...
I do not condone illegal acts, I think "stealing few boxes" should be amongst ways to make this hobby more affordable :P
It should be listed as "expensive", "more expensive" and "how to make instant noodles healthy"
Oddles of Noodles
ORKS IZ DA BEST!!!
WWWWAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH
