The thing that makes Nacht the scariest, for me, is the total lack of voicelines. Your character doesn't speak, no perk jingles, not even a voice calling out the drop you just picked up. That, and the zombies have a completely different sound from every other map, they hiss and bark at you. Makes them seem even less human.

Couldn't agree more, everyone seems to think verruckt is the scariest and understandably so, but nacht is way scarier because of the claustrophobia and silence with it. Ironically though it's one of the easiest maps since they can't hit you as long as your moving lol 😂

Something that I feel like you missed about Verrückt is when you first start the map, how it tells you the year is 1945, and near Berlin. It really helps set in the hopelessness of both the zombies and World War 2 itself. It always gave me the feeling that no one is coming to rescue you. The Americans and British are too far, the Germans are in the final stages of war and fueled by fanaticism and desperation, and the Soviets would probably shoot you on sight if they came across you. All of that, and your character stumbled upon something dark and sinister that no should ever witness. No one is coming to save you...

7:30 that isn’t a dog barking, that’s a sound coming from the zombies.
Before the iconic demonic screech sounds (which would appear in Verruckt), the zombies in Nacht der Untoten used a plethora of weird sounds that sound more animal than human. Sometimes they’ll hiss like snake, and other times they’ll sound like a monkey or, in this case, a dog barking.
By the way, missed opportunity talking about how different the zombies sound in Nacht. I’ve grown up with the demonic screeches for so long, that coming back to Nacht in WaW, those zombie sounds creeped me the fuck out.

My experince with Nacht... I use to have this friend who lived in an old farm house built in the 1700s. One night in the dead of winter, I was staying over. My friend;s father had started a fire in the fireplace and my friend looks at me and says: "I just unlocked a new mode in that Call of Duty game I got for Christmas can you help me beat it." So we tried a few attempts and refined our strategy each time. But holy crap. You have never truly experienced Nacht until you have played it in front of a fireplace on a cold winter night in a freaken old house. My friends dad comes over to us and asks us to go out to the wood pile and bring in more wood. Let me tell you, that little trip outside into the blinding snow to get wood after playing rounds of Nacht is still a vivid memory in my mind.

Such as in the mission Semper Fi when exploring the shrine and in the map Asylum when in the bathroom, and it felt like you were trespassing on ground you do not belong. There was also a never ending "ringing" noise that can be heard in multiplayer and singleplayer that was unsettling. • @poohwithtimbs7027
    @poohwithtimbs7027 2 года назад +177

I guess for me I'll explain so reasons to the creepiness of each map.
Nacht- Off the back, the perfect word for this map is "Isolation". Like there is no other survivors with you, your in a deserted airfield from war, and you see soldiers that although look like survivors are actually the walking corpses of fallen soldiers who are slowly making their way towards you. Also this map is very claustrophobic which is unsettling for many and the quietness of the map is haunting in itself. The only noises you hear are just from the zombies or the one or two radios from the map. With these combinations, it truly cause one to be alert at all times.
Veruckt: For this one, the main horror is in it's history. Dentist chairs, creepy carnival music, baby crying, and more you can tell that this place was a place of torture for it's residents that stayed here before it became infested with zombies. Also it's surprisingly has darker shades compared to any of the other WAW maps to come along with the fire which makes it convey a disturbing feeling. There's also the dripping water from years of decay that has taken over the map. And just like Nacht, this map is also claustrophobic, but not in it's size, but rather it's tight corridors which puts the player in a state of panic as danger is literally around the corner. Overall, this is my favorite waw map in creepiness.
Shi No Numa: Already, the first thing we notice is the unusual setting with it's zombies and the camp itself. Like we are in enemy territory captured and trying to fight for survival. The feeling already makes one curious and uneasy but what makes it more creepy is the zombies themselves in their movement. Specifically in the WAW and Bo1 versions as the way the zombies walk is unnatural compared to others zombies from previous maps. Not to mention the decay and disgusting nature of the map. If veruckt was already disgusting with it's decay in it's map, we'll get ready for maggots, blood, and gross swamp environment found on the map. Also did we mention the sheer terror from the introduction of hell hounds? It will leave some first time players panicking as they run from these beasts from hell. Although I don't think this map is too creepy, it's make up for in a disgusting swampy environment. Not a bad map.
Der Riese: This one is creepy as their is some story here. Here, Richthofen basically did cruel experiments on Samantha and Fluffy behinds Maxis's back and it shows a bit of context on group 935, the creation of the undead which were failed super soldiers, the creation of the wonderwaffe and it set up for future maps like Kino or Moon. Overall, a disturbing background story. From the looks of the map, we are in a huge facility with lots of machines, test tubs and teleporters that give off a Frankenstein esk vibe which adds to the creepiness factor. Plus it's a dark map in it's lighting although not as dark as Veruckt, is still pretty dark which is unsettling at first. In a way, it reminds me of when your forced to turn off a light in a room and your scramble out that room to escape the darkness. Also, let's not forget to mention the entire place is on fire and is falling apart once we get there as if it was recently abandoned. Probably the least scary in my opinion but a good creepy map.

God the memories. I was always into video games, my Dad showed me games like Bioshock and Call of Duty World at War when I was 4-5 years old, and one time he yelled my name from his gaming room and I went in there and he said there was a new game mode and he wanted me to play it. I took the controller and started up “Nazi Zombies”. The cutscene and sounds were immediately burned into my memory and I was terrified. The first thing I did was look at all the barriers. I think after a while that day, my highest round was 4 and my brother made it to 7-8. Me and my brother got to round 12 I think just the next day. When more maps came out, I was in love. I had always been interested in WW2 so these maps collected the grim, hopeless feeling of the war, while combining the horror and desperation of the undead coming back just after the war. Also thought it’d be cool to mention, because of World at War being the only game in CoD to include the Marine Corps as the main characters (co-main characters for WaW), I’ve always had an infatuation with the USMC. Now, at today years old, that passion is turning into fuel for getting more fit and just today, trying to contact a marine recruiter. This game, more than any other has shaped who I am. The other zombies games are nostalgic, the multiplayer brings me flashes to those memories, but World at War does so much more mentally it brings me to the verge of tears. I really hope Treyarch can simplify zombies and give it this same atmosphere, the new generation should be able to look back at these like we do with WaW

The opening sequence for _"Nacht der Untoten"_ makes my blood run cold after all these years. _"Nacht der Untoten"_ is by far the scariest map. The lack of Perk-a-Cola machines, the cramped and claustrophobic quarters, and the ominous and foggy atmosphere all combine to make an unforgettable horror experience. The original _Nazi Zombies_ storyline was excellent, but "Call of the Dead" is when the storyline jumped the shark. "Ascension" is the last good Zombies level in terms of lore. "Moon" was a fun and innovative map, but by then the storyline had crumbled into nonsense.

Honestly the ticking clock, stuck at 9:15 if I recall right, in Der Reise scared me a lot as a teenager, it was just creepy, made it feel like time was frozen around you. Also those dots on the moon that hinted at a future bigger than any of us could’ve imagined were so creepy back then.

just some creepy easter eggs you forgot to mention:
    - the richtofen demonic laugh easter egg in Shi No Numa (hold X on the bookshelf in the Doctor's Quarters, near the trap switch)
    - the creepy phone call easter egg in Shi No Numa (hold X on the phone sitting on a desk in the Comm Room)
    - the severed lower half of a body, stuck in one of the two furnace shafts of the Teleporter B Room in Der Riese
    - the hanging body (only lower half visible) seen through the window into the other building, visible from the Teleporter B box location in Der Riese)
    very nostalgic though!

Even as a 25 year old that played WaW Zombies for the first time last year (I played every version of the remasters) this was a whole different experience. I had no idea that the iconic Zombie noises weren't in the original Nacht, and the noises that they do make is even more atmospheric and terrifying. And then the Verruckt sprinters.. Dear God..

Nacht and Verruckt are definitely the scariest. I’m 20 almost 21 so I played WAW at a young age, I remember beating the campaign and literally shitting bricks when I saw that cutscene and spawning into that concrete bunker. Complete isolation, nothing but you, the mystery box, and the weapons you may acquire to defend yourself from the horrors of the nazi zombies.

Clicked on this vid just to say I saw the WAW Zombies cutscene after completing the campaign when I was about 8. Absolutely curled up in the chair and started crying. In fact it scared me so damn hard that I started praying that a zombie outbreak never happens before I would go to bed, looking back it is just funny immaturity and fear.

Y'know, as the story went on and got more and more bloated after bo2 it became really easy to forget how horrible group 935's experiments were sometimes, and how much samantha suffered. It is truly awful to think about the things that warped that poor child's mind into the bloodthirsty puppeteer of a zombie horde

the games campaign always gave off an eerie vibe. like all those bodies and death had a cause and effect. booting up what i though was an epilogue mission and seeing zombies come out of the fog made me shit myself back when i was 13 or whatever. I always guessed that the soldier survivor you play in nacht was apart of the bomber mission that ended up crashing at the end of the mission

I can’t stress this enough it’s why I love WaW zombies. Remasters and reimagined maps on later cods don’t have the same eerie and dread that this game had. I love bo3 zombies but I wish it had this atmosphere instead of world class saving the universe stuff.

Think you missed some of Der Riese's most ominous details. The moon being all screwed up, the dog cages complimenting the bloody pawprint in parts of the map, and the clock being stuck in a time loop were always the more unsettling parts of Der Riese to me. Also world at war zombies clipping is fucked and you'd basically get grappled you whenever you tried to knife them. It was unintentional and more of a bug that would be fixed in following releases, but it also ended up making them feel more threatening to fight or even get near since they'd just get you stuck so easy lol.

I remember watching my stepdad play through the campaign of WaW as a kid, same with multiplayer. Then one day, he finally beat the campaign and that cutscene began. Both of us were confused but the moment he saw a figure running from the fog, he instinctively covered my eyes to stop myself from getting scared.
Now this wasn't unusual for him to do, as he knew that my childhood trauma was a show called Lost Tapes. The idea of something emerging from the darkness/fog and running at me was a horrifying thought. Nowadays, I can watch the cutscene and love the aesthetic

While I love most of the modern zombies games, you can’t deny that WAW really was the prime zombies experience that had the atmosphere and vibe originally intended. Being a fan of Horror I would love to see them bring back this kind of atmosphere in the newer games when they come out, hopefully the new acquisitions from Microsoft brings about a new and dark experience.
