    WAW did an amazing job at portraying WW2 for what it truly was… horrific and brutal. From the missions to the cutscenes to the eerie music. Whether it was the campaign, MP, or zombies, they nailed it. Then we have WWII and Vanguard… those two are what WW2 would be portrayed as if it was a Disney movie. WW2 itself was as close as you could get to actual hell on earth and when you play WWII or Vanguard… the last thing you feel is a sense of horror. I would do nearly anything to get a remaster of WAW on the new engine

    What I really loved about Waw was the gritty realism hell I still have the cover art poster of the marine running into the Japanese jungle with that Thompson. So bad ass. Was my first mature game
    Edit:I was 10 on a cold December night. My dad had trouble with Waw missions. Now I was already playing cod 3 at the time with its multiplayer. So he asked me for help. I finished the second mission then started vendetta. That level stuck out to me so much as a kid. I was truly scared because Waw was something I was not familiar with. Limbs being blown off. Dogs coming at you. You find nazis burning you out of the house. Then I sniped the general. I played the rest of the game. Then saw zombies and instantly Turing off the game. Freaked me out and refused to play it till like 2 years later. The level of fear playing this as a kid while playing campaign to zombies is what made me love it so much.

      My Uncle worked in a video and games rental store and I too was playing Cod 3 and Halo 1 and 2, he was in his 40s and I used to go stay the night and play split screen coop WaW with him. Hed let me play all the games I couldn't own at that age and stay up late eating pizza and drinking fizzy drinks. He was in the kitchen when I first started the game and being alone in the lounge with the intro to semper fi, watching his eye get cut out with that blade is permanently inscribed into my brain, the gritty nothing held back campaign of waw was both scary and incredible together. The first game I played where your allies died at all really.
      I remember being excited every second weekend when I knew it was gonna be Waw weekend at my uncles, we were sad when the campaign finished and to our surprise Zombies mode existed haha, we spent countless hours every fortnight playing through Nacht and then the DLCs. Then one year he started letting me borrow the waw disc but as soon as it was night time that menu music terrified me and I couldn't bring myself to play zombies alone ever.
      Fast forward to today I have round 50 to 75 on all maps and have made 100s of friends through black ops zombies and brought so many people from school into the zombies realm, we would use the class laptops to play pirated pc waw 4 player coop on LAN and play custom maps and to this day nearly all my friends no matter what our lives are doing, still find the time for the occasional der riese match or something, My Uncle doesn't know how many people he brought together through one Video game. His room mate was a savage Quake and Doom player and taught me how to be both a great sport and a great player with MW2 and we still jam these amazing old CoDs, they are like a portal to a time where life was simple and nothing but fun. I miss those days.

      To be fair, the reason why zombies felt the same with multiplayer and campaign was because they used maps and characters from those modes cause they couldn’t afford to make their own. After the success, zombies became a whole storyline and yeah it’s very different from the campaign and multiplayer but I always saw zombies as it’s own game, separate from other modes.

    I personally think WaW has a underrated soundtrack. It somehow incorporates metal and orchestra to highlight the intensity and brutality of the war represented in each mission. In most American missions, it will have a patriotic and humble theme before you light up Japanese soldiers with a flamethrower. But it really sets in with the Russian campaign. Vendetta starts with somber and depressing music, for the stalemate at Stalingrad, seeing Germans executing Russians in the streets. But after Their land, their blood, it has typical orchestrated battle music and guitar riffs representing the merciless push into Germany, the tables have turned.

    An Small detail of the campaign is that Reznov is always saying to Chernov that nobody will read his book reporting the war. When he dies Reznov picked up his book and reads it during the end credits, where your choices over the game will change it a bit

    • @Nutty31313
      @Nutty31313 Год назад +9

      I loved that detail, and it really hit home the brutality that gets shown in the Russian side of the campaign. The entire time, Reznov is bent on revenge and encourages you to kill any German soldier you come across, no matter whether they are fighting back, dying on the ground or trying to surrender. And what does Chernov have to say about you if you give in and follow Reznov's example? "His merciless brutality defines him only as a savage, just like the rest of the Red Army. He is no hero." Compared to the tone in the Modern Warfare series, or even most of Black Ops, this a real gut punch. If you do what the game encourages you to do, you are not a hero in this story.

    I didn't think the campaign was that short compared to other CODs at the time. It's a good solid 6 hours on easy for my playthroughs, where MW2 I can sweep through in about 5 hours. The campaigns were always short and sweet, and with the limited gameplay offerings on hand, older COD campaigns never overstayed their welcome and always found a way to wrap it up right on time when things started to get repetitive. Part of the reason why I love these campaigns is that short and sweet aspect, which I think helps replayability.
    WAW is my favorite COD just for it's campaign alone, and is vastly underated in the grand scheme of things. There will also never be another COD like it again, with it's absolutely brutal gore, along with the "sorry, not sorry" Nazi flags and imagery all over the place in the Russia side of the campaign. I will never forget when playing the last mission fighting waves of the defending Nazi soldiers and hearing Erika and other German music playing in the background presumably playing for their moral during their last stand. It was simply incredible and I've yet to find another experience similar to that. Not to mention, just the focus and quality of it all.
    It's Treyarch's magnum opus. A true send off to the WW2 genre at that time. The best WW2 triple A shooter of all time.

    I think WAW is so different because it openly explored the dark side of warfare that previous COD games never tackled. For a movie comparison Cod 1-3 was like Kelly Heroes and WAW was like HBO’s The Pacific. The Pacific show was also important too because although WAW was released before The Pacific, their stories of the American campaigns are very similar. Perhaps that’s because the developers actually read the memoirs that were used to write The Pacific and thus the game is historically driven. I also think the cultural interest of WWII that we had in the 2000s was very important because by 2008 it was starting to fade from interest but the late 2000s we began to see a strong focus on mental health and PTSD in war. WAW’s attitude of patriotism second survival first just made it so much different to any COD game at the time, even MW2 the next release didn’t have that.

    • @redaug4212
      @redaug4212 4 месяца назад

      I wouldn't compare COD 2 to Kelly's Heroes. COD 2 had it's own vibe going on. It was basically the straight man of the series. It didn't try to be patriotic or cynical; just earnest like those old British war documentary series. COD 3 was like a sequel to The Longest Day, if anything, and COD 1 was like a bunch of different movies because that's what the game was more or less trying to emulate.

Multiplayer is alright but Zombies and Campaign are top notch zombies was better than WWII zombies in my opinion lol

    This is the game that not only got me on the CoD hype train, but also what got me to really delve into world history and actually got my dad interested in gaming as he is big into history and gave us something new to bond over. Fantastic game and whenever they announce a new WWII game in the series, I can’t help but hope that it’s like WaW in tone and presentation. Hell, I’d even take a remaster similar to CoD4 or the MW2 campaign and frankly I’m surprised that they haven’t done something like that for WaW..

    There has never been a campaign that captures the time like WAW did. Don’t get me wrong bo1 had a fantastic campaign based around a highly imaginative premise, but WAW really captured the real life like no other cod before or since. The depiction of such a brutal time held no punches, and that is why it is so replayable to this day. An absolute work of art.

    Great video, but I just thought I should mention, there does exist "Call of Duty V" prototypes that were built before CoD4 in early 2007, they help provide great insight into how far along the game was at that point, it was some test maps, CoD2 weapons, an early CoD4 engine and codebase, a lot of placeholders, BUT that being said, in the prototypes there's also a lot of new stuff that ended up in the final game, namely animations and weapons. But how they went from that in May 2007 to the final game just a year and a half later is astounding, cause it was merely a test at that point and nothing more.

Most of the day we were playing by passing controller after each mission/death so being able to play campaign and zombies together was really cool back then, it was one of the games we played most until mw2 released and took us over 1.5 years to collect all 69 stars in special ops. We mastered it and even today 13 years after it’s release I can beat breach and clear in about 30s on veteran or homeland security alone using 2 controllers.

I think the main reason I got it was to play zombies with buddies but I ended up getting hooked on the multiplayer online and I feel like it really made me better at all the cods I ended up getting after which was COD 4 and MW2 was my 3rd. I was crazy that even 5-6 years after the game was released I remember coming back to each games online mode and the online community was still crazy active with many new players…a lot different then what happens now after a game dies. Oh I hated this cod with every fiber of my body. I had a Wii when WaW launched so the first couple of months of WaW I played on a Wii. I think it had only 7 MP maps, and some campaign missions were cut. When I turned 13, 3 months into WaWs cycle, I was legally allowed to get a job and make my own money. By now it was nearly June and I saved enough to buy a PS3 with WaW, oh the joy :D. That joy was crushed when I found out WaW was been getting a ton of DLC packs and didn't take those bundles into account when matchmaking. Meaning I worked for multiple months to get the full WaW experience, only to get kicked back to the main menu like a peasant every time a DLC mape came up in the rotation. It did teach me a valuable lesson tho: all these companies care about is how much money they can extract from you, and to say your just a number to them would be generous.

It is one of his favorite video games of all time (interestingly alongside Jak and Daxter) and he loved it for the same reasons many of us still do and many of those you mentioned: it had a very dark and somber tone on warfare and did not glorify the second World War.
    He said (paraphrasing here) that the tone of the game felt like it respected the horrors of war, and the sacrifices that were made in the second World War while also being enjoyable and engaging to play.
    Guess what his Christmas gift is this year? That's right, an Xbox and Call of Duty World at War
