So when I came to the faith, I was immediately brought into a Hebrew roots Christian congregation. They weren't cult-y and their teachings were very thoughtful. The community was super friendly and caring so I really considered their theology to be solid. Plus, given the testimony of the people in the congregation, studying Torah gave them a deeper understanding of God and having done that for the past two years I would say that studying the Torah and Messianic Jewish teachings have been a huge spiritual blessing.
That being said, I've always felt like there was something off. Not seriously so, but enough to make me doubt the walk. Although having converted at 30, mainstream Christianity didn't seem right either and all of that confusion stems from not understanding the expectations God had of me in my Christian walk.
Of course we're saved by grace alone, but we're also told to *work* out our salvation with fear and trembling so I can thank you enough for breaking this subject down and helping me to have to certainty of the application of the Law of God in my life to the level of being able to defend my choice to abstain from pork without feeling like I'm failing God by not adhering to every Mosaic command I can.
This really has been a blessing and I sent it to a friend of mine who has also been having doubts about the Torah walk, it has felt lacking in grace to us both at many times.
I praise God for His perfect work and thank you for your well-articulated teachings! 🙌🏻

I also agree a few things as I listen to you.
Dang ... David can go SO fast! I have watched him for a while. I do believe that his mind is probably in top 0.01% of smarts. I am sure he is brilliant.
He does (David) make a point, quote a scholar and then assumes the argument is closed and moves on.
You (Rob) are very opposite in the way you present. You are methodical, detailed, and in a more global (bigger picture) kind of way. I like the way you say something like "let's unpack this scripture" then proceed to do exactly that.
I also admire your (Rob) mental prowess, and I've said that before. Your depth of knowledge into the our Holy Bible inspires me and makes me thirst for more.
This was a great teaching and if there was still a little sway in me toward the Torah followers, you yanked me back to where my heart knows that I need to be.
Thank you for your ongoing work on the behalf of your fellow men.

On the subject of the curtains, i would say it's more than just trying to shift the argument because that curtain represented Christs body broken for us. That can't just be shifted around to fit what someone is espousing. It reminds me of other arguments from their teachers trying to fit their view at any cost.

I would assert that the Sabbath still stands but I would not have taken the approach that there are NO changes in the Mosaic law under the New Covenant. Here is the major problem within the HR movement, many don't understand that there IS a change in the law with the New Covenant! Those changes come about, out of necessisty, with the change of the priesthood. So, the Levitical laws, the temple services, and the sacrificial system have all been fulfilled with the change of the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. I would agree with you Rob on these changes and Hebrews spells that out for us. I also like that you brought up Hebrews 10:26-31, but I would like to break those verses down some. Verse 26 state that if we sin willfully after we received the knowledge of the truth that there remains no longer a sacrifice for sins. We must ask ourselves what is truth? The biblical definition of truth is found in Ps. 119:142 and 151. These verses tell us that God's laws and His commandments are truth. We will be judged by them if we willfully break His commandments. I would also agree that under the New Covenant it is worse! Under the old covenant anyone who rejected Moses could be condemned to death by the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses. Verse 29 tells us it is worse for us if we trample the Son of God underfoot counting the blood of the covenant by which we are sanctified as a common thing and insult the spirit of grace. Grace is only given to those who choose to walk in obedience to God's law(Ps. 103:17,18.) You do not do this without Christ and you do not need grace if you don't want to walk in obedience. Grace is given as we learn to walk within God's righteous laws. 1 John 3:7 tells us we PRACTICE righteousness. Righteousness is found in Ps. 119:172, all of God's commandments are righteousness.
It is the 10 commandments that remain in BOTH the old and new covenants. These 10 commandments are God's moral law. Under the Old Covenant, the commandments were written on stone, because of their hearts, they did not want to obey. Under the New Covenant, the commandments are written on our hearts. We do them because we love Him, not for salvation! God has always wanted obedinence, but out of our love for Him. The sabbath was given to mankind before there ever was a nation of Israel. The Sabbath was given to man at creation. Jesus said that the sabbath was made for man(mankind) not just Jews or Israel, and He claimed to be Lord of the Sabbath! I can even show you that He rose during the night of the Sabbath, not on the first day of the week, through a breakdown of the Gospel accounts but that would take too long in this post.
It is the Sabbath that points us to Christ. Sunday, while I am not against anyone meeting on that day, is not the new Christian sabbath. It is NOT the "Lord's Day" as that term came from the Catholic Church. We do not keep a "sabbath principle" by choosing whatever day we want to set apart either. God is the one who chose the 7th day and blessed it and set it apart. He even tells us WHY in the commandment itself, "For in six days God created the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in it. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." We cannot undo what God has done. This is why Christ kept the Sabbath and calls Himself the Lord of it. He tells us to follow Him as He has followed His Father in John 15:10.
There is a lot of early church history of the first century believers all keeping the biblical sabbath and the feast days. This began to change shortly after the first century as Christians started to distance themselves from anything "Jewish" This is where the separation begins. The sabbath and the feasts of the LORD are NOT "Jewish," they are God's ways! We consider them as being only for Israel because of this separation that began shortly after the first century. A careful reading of the book of Acts will show you that the disciples and the Apostle Paul were continuing to meet on the Sabbath day and keeping the set apart times. They didn't do this just because they were Jewish and that was their custom. They did it because Jesus did not come to change these things and He kept them also, as an example to us! We are to walk as He walked if we are His followers.
We find our rest in Christ. Creation week shows us this. There are 6 days(or 6,000 years) for man and then we enter into the Sabbath rest or millenial reign. This is a shadow picture and it is why the Sabbath is important. This is what Hebrews 4 is showing us. All thoughout the scriptures we find God asserting that the Sabbath is His! The 7th day Sabbath is the LORD's day! He set it apart and told us to remember it. Sadly, we have forgotten it or we make it about salvation. I do not put my salvation in ANY commandment as that would make Christ to have died in vain! I keep the Sabbath because I love Him and He said, "If you love me, keep my commandments." We should ALL want to do this. We all agree that sin is the trangression of the law. The law's only purpose is the show you what sin is. So, breaking this day IS a sin and if Jesus is your messiah, you should follow Him and no longer want to just walk away from this commandment. It is through Christ we begin to walk within the law. You cannot walk out God's righteous laws without Him! Once you accept Him as your Messiah, He puts His Spirit in you and He changes your desires from one who walks in disobedience to one who wants to walk in obedience. Keeping the Sabbath shows that Christ is the one that is leading you. It is the evidence of your faith in Him. I don't earn any merit, it does not make me better, and I would never want to throw it in anyone's face. Please Rob reconsider this one. I really would like to have some dialog with you.
    Blessings, Ray

Love how you broke it down. I too am a firm believer God's laws are eternal. And we should all follow them, this is how we respond to him Yahsua with gratitude. In the old covenant God demanded a sacrifice to atone for sins. And now that Yahshua has come. He became the perfect sacrifice once for all. And Yes there was a change in Gods Law. Now I come and present myself to the Lord as a living sacrifice as in Romans 12 to leave my old life and walk the new life through Yahshua. And I will follow his laws in the new Way.
And there is no house of the Lord that man can create in this new way. We can follow God wherever we are. The ground I step in to adore the Lord is Holy. Let's do as Yahshua said brothers and sisters. May the Lord fill you all with joy and so much wisdom.

I certainly agree with all you said around the obvious changes in the New Covenant when compared to the Old Testament law. I made notes on the use of “all” in Matthew 5:18 in the past and will simply copy and paste them here below in case they can assist anyone else when dealing with HRM’s interpretation of Matt 5:18.
      ***
What does “all” mean here? What does “all” mean in these verses? What is the context of accomplished?
      Luke 18:31
31 And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.
      - Would “everything” in its fullest sense include Christ returning for his bride as in Revelation? Yes, and clearly Jesus is not including that. There is always a context.
      - “all” in Matt 5:18 is the same Greek word we have here for “everything” (g3956. πᾶς pas).
Luke 21:22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.
      - Would the fullest use of “all” here include the millennial kingdom? Of course. And yet that is not what Jesus is including.
      John 19:28
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”
      - If “all” was finished 2000 years ago, why are we still here? Again, “all” is not being used in the fullest since and almost never is. Context should be very important to the interpreter.
      John 19:30
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
      Luke 9:30-31
30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
      Luke 12:50
50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished!
Does automatically interpreting “all” in its fullest sense in Matt 5:18 mean you do not need to consider context or consider the logical result that, for example, if nothing, including the method of atonement (animal sacrifice) has passed from the law, then you have no atonement in Christ? Clearly not.

Does "until heaven and earth pass away "have to be end times talk. Could "until heaven and earth pass away" be a passing of seperateness so instead meaning a coming together of the two. This way "until heaven and earth pass away" could be the same as "until all is accomplished". Or does this just not work?

There is now way for you to read the 5:17-20 and interpret that God changed his law. Unless this video was made with the intent of being click bait. Jesus said not one jot or tittle would change. Here’s another passage from Jesus regarding Moses law and authority: 23 :: NIV. "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. Now the teachings of the Pharisee are based on the law of Moses and Jesus according to this verse commands his disciples to do what they teach but not what they do. Disciples imitate their teacher the goal is to be like the master. If he observed sabbath then I will, if he act kosher then I will, if he picked up his cross then I will.

Great video. I also would point out that, even if the HR/TO position could somehow establish the ongoing validity of the sin offering, they invariably have to change the purpose of the offering. Usually, instead of “atonement”, it is for “remembrance”, or something similar. That, of course, would also be a change in the Law.
And appeals to passages in the Torah that speak of making one fit to enter the Temple are simplistic and don’t cover the breadth of the language in the Torah. The sin offering really did atone for the sin of the person making the sacrifice, but in a temporal way, canceling God’s temporal judgments. Jesus’ sacrifice “makes perfect” those who are being set apart (Heb 10:14). If we are made perfect by Christ, there is simply no more reason for a sin offering, not for the original reason, and not for the theoretical “remembrance” reason.

Excellent video! Loved the Original debate also. David seems fixated with the opinions of men more than scripture. As you pointed out the title of Scholar does not necessarily mean correct. I have dealt with this ideologue mentality myself of all places debating on twitter with SDA's. In this circumstance you can't keep one foot in the old testament and one foot in the new testament. There was a change, you point this out perfectly repeatedly. We should always seek the scriptures for Truth and not stay hung up on our idea of what that truth should be. I think some of this problem stems from people not reading their Bible straight through, I see that so much when people will post on twitter their daily Bible study, I don't see them reading an entire book but rather skipping around to maybe a chapter here and a few verses there. How does one get the context of what the author is trying to say by chopping up the text so? This is where false doctrines creep in. I could go on in great length about this topic but will wrap it up here 😏. Love your channel I have watched all of your videos, some more than just a couple times. The line "until all is accomplished" is also crystal clear. The 2nd coming hasn't happened as well as a lot of other prophecy so the Law remains in effect for those who want to follow it....just as Jesus did :)

    PASS or CHANGED?
He says Matthew 5:17- 18 says that nothing can "change" from the law. That's why he is pointing out all these changes to strengthen his argument.
But Matthew 5:18 does not say "CHANGE". It says not one jot or tittle will "PASS". The meaning of "pass" and the meaning of "changed or change"are two different Greek words and meanings.
Change means to change one thing into another. Like the law was changed from the levitcal priesthood to the Melchizedek.
Pass doesn't mean the same as changed. Pass means that not one jot or tittle will be set aside or placed off to the side. It has nothing to do with anything changing.
Thus when Jesus said not one jot or title will PASS from the law he was not talking about changes. Thus changes can be made, like the priesthood, while at the same time the law is not destroyed.
Thus the law being fulfilled does not set any part of the law to the side.
For example, because Christ fulfilled the need for 1 sacrifice in heaven for sins, does not set aside the sacrificial law on earth. It was not "set aside", because it was "fulfilled". Thus it was not "destroyed" either.
Temple will be built. There will be a Zadok Levitical priesthood and sacrifices will start up on earth, because heaven and earth have not passed, nor has these laws been set aside. Ezekeiel

Thanks, Josef! In Matt 5:18 the word translated "pass" (or some translations say "disappear") is παρέρχομαι (parerchomi). And it's used twice in this one verse: "For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth _parerchomi,_ not an iota, not a dot, will _parerchomi_ the Law until all is accomplished." (Matt. 5:18)
According to _The Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature,_ in the context of this verse, the word _parerchomi_ is used to mean "to come to an end and so no longer be there, pass away, disappear." For that reason, I have to respectfully disagree with you when you say that "pass has nothing to do with anything changing." When something comes to an end (like "heaven and earth" and "the Law") it most definitely changes!

This was the faultiness of the Mosaic (and all O T.) Law. Thus Christians are delivered from O.T. law, and are under grace. Rom. 10:4 says Christ is the end of the law (all of it, even the Decalogue) for all that believe.

It is my understanding that the Talmud described two goats, one for sacrifice and one sent to Azazel or the wilderness. The priest would tie a scarlet thread to the goat for Azazel and cut a piece of the thread off and tack it to the temple door. It would turn white indicating that Yah had accepted the sacrifice for the people's sins. According to the Talmud 'scholars'/rabbis, the thread never turned white after Jesus crucifixion. This would also signal an end to the animal sacrifice prior to the destruction of the temple.

@peterthepakeha2799 Am i really misinterpreting the verses?
Let's reverse the question....where does it say a ( gentile ) believer can or should break/ignore the law? What is our problem with the Law, is it not the Word of GOD? Psalm 119:142 even says it's the Truth. Should we not love (the) truth? David did and he was a man after God's hart.
And of course i read and believe the letters of Paul. Galatians might seem clear to you but is the most misunderstood of the letters. Paul says he delights in and serves the law ( Romans 7:25 )
I believe 2 Peter 3:16 where he says about Paul's letters:
...as also in all the letters, speaking in them concerning these things, among which some things are difficult to be understood, which the ignorant and unestablished distort to their own destruction, as also the other Scriptures.
      Paul confirms:
So indeed, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. ( Romans 7:12 )
But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, because it has been written: "You shall be holy, because I am holy."
      ( 1 Peter 1:15,16 )
So how can we follow the command given by Peter to be holy if we ignore the Law that is holy?
In my opinion the things that we believers are most 'against' are the Sabbath/biblical Feasts and the food laws. While in fact those are the most easy things to obey. Hart circumcision is difficult and can only be done by Christ.
Denying ourselves, dying to the flesh is our greatest battle in my opinion, not following commandments.

So if the end is declared from the beginning then we must check what’s before Matt 5:18 to determine what’s after.
It seems fitting that Daniel was given the prophecy that there would be another pause just like his pause.
Daniel twice speaks of the animal sacrifices stopping temporarily then when Yahshua returns he will call back the Levite’s from the line of Zadoch to serve Him again in the Set Apart place like Ezekiel speaks of.

I can't tell you how many times in the comments section of our videos I read the accusation that the mainstream Christian theological position is based on what we do or don't want to do. The theory is that we don't want to rest one day a week or give up our bacon, etc. so we reinterpret the Bible to accommodate our personal desires.
If that were truly the case, mainstream Christian theology would be waffling back-and-forth with each new generation and vary greatly between cultures and eras. But as it is, our position on these issues has remained unchanged since the apostles. Christians are not under the old covenant law not because that's what we prefer, but because that's what Scripture says.
"By dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code." (Rom. 7:6)
"If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law." (Gal. 5:18)
"Do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ." (Col. 2:16-17)

The reason there is controversy over the meaning of certain passages in the Bible is problematic. The Bible was written in four different ways, literal, metaphorical, allegorical and anagogic (literal words with a spiritual meaning. Maybe, just maybe God purposed it that way so that we should seek HIM in prayer earnestly asking HIM to show us the truth of HIS ‘word’ AS HE WOULD HAVE US KNOW.
Most Christians today only pray for the mundane things of this world instead of praying for what God wants of us, to guide us into his will for us.

      Yes!!!
I believe Heaven and Earth means the relationship between God (Heaven) and his people (Earth), it’s a metaphor.
      In Matthew 28:18 Christ says
“I have been given ALL authority in Heaven and on Earth”
So the old heaven and earth passed away when Christ was given all authority and we are dealing with a new heaven and earth now.

    Clear as mud.
Jesus said in your reference of Luke 24:44 "...all things must be fulfilled , which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me."
The "all things" that Jesus is referring to are exactly what he said, the things written concerning Him. (E.g. Isaiah 53 et al)
Not the whole law of God, not all of the psalms, not all of the prophets.
Has the Ezekiel 38-39 war happened yet? Has the future Ezekiel temple been built yet?
I think you get the point.
At least you seem nice in all your videos. But I'm sure the serpent seemed appealing and kind and intelligent and right also.
This in no way made the serpent right, only that he had a subtle plan and knew how to bring it about with his victims.
I hope you are not such as this, but just misdirected from a presupposed doctrine that you fit the Bible into like you speak of other movements or religions doing. This is understandable since you seem to like the corrupt ESV.

Matthew 5 refers to the 10 commandments only based on v21,22 and 27,28 ( kill and adultery).
"Till all be fulfilled" can not mean that the law is not binding any more because of v19 that means perpetuity since teaching for or against it will determine greatness or being least in the kindom of heaven which is in the future. You can never get the correct context if you only based on v18

I agree with your comment on Colossians: Paul's point was "do not judge others" (and do not let others judge you) regarding eating, keeping feasts, new moons, sabbath, etc. Those are mere shadows of the true substance, which is Yeshua. So, there is no argument there... But, you lost me on your first part of your reply. You seem to agree with D Wilbur's explanation of Hebrews 10:28. I have to say, that particular passage is so simple to understand, it's hard to believe anyone would take it as proof that Christians are required to keep the law of Moses. The writer of Hebrews was simply making the point (a contrast) that if, under the old covenant, anyone breaking the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses, how much more will the punishment be for those who set aside Yeshua's sin offering under the New Covenant. The New Covenant is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and we are complete in Yeshua.

    • @TheBiblicalRoots
      @TheBiblicalRoots  2 года назад

That's a great question, davelyn! The word translated as "abolish" is καταλῦσαι (katalysai) in the original Greek, which means to destroy, throw down, or demolish. The word translated as "fulfill" is πληρῶσαι· (plerosai), which means to complete, fill, or fulfill.
So in Matt 5:17, Jesus is saying "I have not come to destroy or throw down the Law, but to bring it to completion by fulfilling it's requirements."
Either way, the Law has come to an end, of course. But there is a big difference between (a.) ending something by destroying it and making it void ("abolish"), and (b.) ending something by satisfying its requirements and bringing it to a state of completion ("fulfill").

The word for relax is lyo like in kata lyo. Jesus Christ ( the savior) paid the penalty for our sins. The difference between the old and New Testament is the punishment for breaking the law . It was instant death but here is where God grace comes in . He paid the price for us to have a second, third, and as many as 7x70 chances to repent.

    Love Thy Neighbors as yourself,

-Be willing to protect or restore their health.

    -Always be consenting.
    -Bear their burden.
…subsequently Love God; ultimately fulfilled all 10 commandments.
Given that the 10 are fulfilled by this, none of the other 603 commands are necessary, as they only were because they lead to capability of atoning for breaking them.

What I believe Jesus is saying is that nothing will change in the law until the temple passes away. Which makes sense considering when the temple would be destroyed in AD70 all the laws that apply to the temple would pass away with it. Which is what the book of Hebrews is all about.

•Feeding the hungry doesn’t require animal sacrifices
•caring for the orphans and widows doesn’t require animal sacrifices
•eating biblically clean doesn’t require the priesthood, the temple or the prescribed sacrifice.
The commandments of God weren’t only for Jews, they were for all the 12 tribes of Israel. Leviticus 20:26; Isaiah 11:12; Ezekiel 37:21
“He has declared to you, O man, what is good. And what does Yahweh require of you but to do right, and to love loving-commitment, and to walk humbly with your God?”
      ‭Micah 6:8‬
“Let us hear the conclusion of the entire matter: Fear God and guard His commands, for this applies to all mankind! (Not just the Jews)
For God shall bring every work into right-ruling, including all that is hidden, whether good or whether evil.”
      ‭‭Ecclesiastes12:13-14‬ ‭

Anybody show me where in the Old testament does it say Christ would change anything. The Bible says God will not do nothing unless you show it to his prophets Amos 3:7. You guys need to read Deuteronomy 13 all of. Second John nine through 10

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, *not like the covenant that I made with their fathers* on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord." (Jer 31:31-32)

@@TheBiblicalRoots the New covenant is with the house of Israel and the house of juice if you want to be in God's house you got to abide by God's rules it's just that simple. You must worship God in spirit and truth there's no truth in Sunday worship Easter Christmas New Year's Day Thanksgiving. Why we just can't preach the word like Timothy says

Interesting part putting down appeal to scholarship. Mr. Solberg did the same thing in his debate with Rabbi Singer. Rabbi Singer refused to recognize any scholarship as valid and appealed to scripture only as valid. Check out the debate. It was excellent.

If you listen carefully, Tim, I did not "put down an appeal to scholarship. " Rather, I made a very specific statement about scholarship, which, BTW, included the statement ""I'm certainly not opposed to siding scholarship. I do it all the time in my books and papers." You might consider re-watching that section of the video (04:11).
      Blessings, Rob
