Why I Hate My Hero Academia... (A Rant?)

  • Hi Everyone! It's been a while and I just wanted to talk about my feelings towards My Hero. It was once a series that I loved and adored with my whole heart but now it is something that causes me stress when I look at it. I just wanted to talk about the problems that I have with the series. I know that there are some topics in this video that I am not the best person to speak on but I tried my best to describe my thoughts about the topics.
    Honestly I do want to say that If they kept Midoriya Quirkless it would have been more interesting. So many people can relate to Midoriya because of his Quirkless status and the discrimination that comes with it. To get rid of him being quirkless feels like it's giving off the message, "L bozo just not be that." when so many people in real life can't just stop being themselves or can't change the qualities about them that the discrimination stems from.
    Idk that's what I feel about it. Later.

    Someone mentioned MHA kinda losing itself as it went on. I never thought about it until now.
    When you think back to the first seasons, it feels like a sorta kiddy but adults can enjoy it, too-show, right? light-hearted, wholesome, to a degree, and not too heavy... then we got darker as the story progressed.

    • @SleepyHoax
      @SleepyHoax  Месяц назад +5

      I do agree! It was more of a kid trying to go through school and overcoming all expectations (Granted you can argue that it started off pretty dark with suicide baiting and almost murder) but as the series went on it got darker especially with the two battles between good and evil and game ending several characters.

      @@SleepyHoax also, I don’t think I specified MHA definitely had fake moments early on, but it wasn’t to its current degree. Upon first watching, I’d assumed it was more light than shounen we were used to, ya know?
      I just kinda think the tone shift as the anime went on was apart of its confusing identity, if that makes sense. 🤔

    The biggest world building problem ive seen with MHA is Allmight telling Izuku he couldn't be a hero without a quirk, when there's literally a girl with a, I KID YOU NOT, bubble quirk. Like the shit you make with a toy wand kind of bubble. Shes a hero who works in nighteyes agency. So you're telling me if Izuku put an automated bubble making machine on his hands and passed it off as a quirk, people would tell him he could totally become a hero? What about Mei? Her jetpacks and other equipment pretty much immitate quirks. Her quirk is that she can see long distances but in reality her power is tinkering which is actually far stronger than people realise. She can essentially emulate quirks through technology. Anyway, as I was trying to get across a quirkless person is more or less on the same playing field as say someone with bubblegum hair for a quirk, or attraction of small objects as a quirk.

    • @SleepyHoax
      @SleepyHoax  Месяц назад +2

      From my understanding, I can be totally misremembering, but the Bubble Girl is a character that was put into the manga through a contest. So essentially she is someone else's character that won the contest and was able to become a minor character in the manga. But I do agree, Midoriya could have easily been a hero without a quirk. He has the will, determination, and frankly all he needed was a martial arts school and no one could have stopped him. This is why I consume fanfics because there are a lot of well written MHA fanfics of Midoriya going about being a hero without a quirk. I love the use of gadgets in those fanfics. It truly feels that Midoriya is on par with the rest of Class 1A. You can even argue that with the machines Mei makes, Midoriya could potentially be on par with Aizawa or Snipe seeing as how one fights essentially quirkless (Which Midoriya could have seen him as a role model rather than All Might) or someone who literally just uses a gun. Needless to say I 100% agree that in the world there is such a high possibility that someone Quirkless could be a hero and it's shocking that it hadn't happened yet.

    15:01 An honest critique of mine seeing how I bought the manga, was aware of it before the anime, and have watched the anime without fail even when disappointed. Three specific events should've made the story better or changed it, and unfortunately because this isn't my story I can only blame Horikoshi or the editors.
    1) Overhaul should've been a bigger threat than presented, everything as far as Eri should've stayed the same. The reason is that this is the only other villain outside the main bad who referenced the quirk doomsday theory and guess what that was a red herring in the classical definition. It went nowhere! His plan to remove and give quirks was AFO-inspired and really should've been adopted not only giving more stakes to the fight but experimenting with giving people multiple quirks but not making them Nomus.
    2) The traitor should've been an unwilling participant who wasn't a side character student. Aoyama being the traitor did nothing for me because I figured he was the traitor back during the forest training arc, he was the only one not to fight and Dabi did see him and ignore him! With that being said if Principal Nezu was the traitor against his will would've definitely made the final arc feel like our heroes are reacting and not actually saving the day.
    3) The fact we never saw Midoriya's dad absolutely grinds my gears, because we all wanted it to be AFO. We wanted the theory that AFO was trying to create successors all the way to the point of having illegitimate children.
    BONUS ROUND) Deku's vigilante arc was all spectacle and no weight, for Horikoshi to show us these quirks and for Deku to end up quirkless is by far the most perfect example of not sticking the landing. I understand the thematic poetry **** that ****! When you've been telling us for almost a decade this is the story of how you became the world's greatest hero and our benchmark is basically Japanese Superman. At least let Deku have the base OFA quirk or do some literal magic where Shigaraki in his last moments gave Deku a mixture of both quirks giving him something better; his own quirk, but naw.

    • @SleepyHoax
      @SleepyHoax  Месяц назад +1

      PREACH IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!
      I really do agree with all your remarks. Overhaul should have been a lot more scary and impactful seeing as he legit took Mirio's quirk away (At least i'm pretty sure he did it's been a hot minute since I've truly thought about that everything that went on in that arc). Especially with Eri by his side he could have made such an impact on the story. It's so unfortunate how his story ended.
      Exactly! The traitor needed to be someone that the readers were at least attached too to some degree or else it doesn't hit the same.
      I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT!!!!! I figured he would show up at some point but from the comments of this video I've found out that it end so I'm shocked that his dad never showed up ONCE in this whole series!!! This isn't Pokemon!!!
      I do agree that arc had no weight. The minute it started it ended. It was over and done with with one big fight of friendship (which I'm fine with fighting for friendship don't get me wrong) and then that's it. It really felt like nothing came from it.
      Thank you for your comment! You brought up some really interesting points!

    If Deku had trauma or anxiety for a good chunk of the series, I'm not sure if the series would have lasted as long. Regrettably I can't imagine a lot of the current fans would enjoy following a character like that without starting to feel annoyed whenever he displays those kinds of tendencies, and the new fans might not stick around when he finally overcomes his trauma. Either way I'm a huge Bakugo fanboy so it wouldn't matter to me.😂
    With that being said, besides endeavor not getting a redemption ark I agree with everything you said I would have loved to see more of the bad parts of the hero society especially some of the things hinted at in my hero vigilante, like the way the government was eliminating good vigilante, and maybe see some of the old heroes who was trying to help people when quirks first started to pop up but they weren't popular enough to be named heroes so was categorized as villains by the government.
    Lastly, I'm not sure if you heard of it or not but there is a webtoon by the name of Unordinary, it's free on the webtoons website and app but they also started to bring out physical volumes. If you haven't checked it out yet I would highly recommend it. It deals with a lot of the things you mentioned in your video.
    Please ignore any spelling mistakes, it took me an hour to write this while I'm at work.😅

      I get that, but people already dunk on Midoriya for crying so showcasing some more traumatic responses to years of bullying, even if they are not as obvious, would have added more depth to Midoriya and the weight of his experiences rather than forget it happened.
      Yeah! Expanding the hero society, or just society in general would have been super interesting to see how intricate it would have gotten.
      I read it a long time ago so maybe I can get back into it.

    Hey, it was nice hearing your thoughts. I just want to say that your grievances with the manga are perfectly justifiable. I do wish that certain subjects within' the story were given the proper amount of time they deserved, however, manga, much like American comic books have unfortunately been very poor when portraying mental health and its effects on an individual and people at large. While I understand Midoriya and his background should have played a major role in his development, I can understand why Horikoshi probably didn't want to go too in depth with it, because I don't think that's quite what he had in mind for him. While there are some elements of the 'underdog,' story within' Deku; mostly coming in the form of him not being able to control his powers properly. While I do wish that Deku had more Matt Murdock in him, (honestly, Daredevil would be more up his alley than being a Batman like figure.) It's obvious Horikoshi saw more Peter Parker/Clark Kent in him. (Horikoshi has been on record saying that Spider-Man was a major inspiration when creating Deku, obvious when you consider that Horikoshi loves not just Marvel and DC shows and movies, but he's also a big fan of their comic books. Volume 8's cover, if I remember correctly was a homage to a cover from Ultimate Spider-Man when Peter first takes on Venom.) Deku (to me at least) truly represents the core values on what a super hero is supposed to be, selfless, caring, the type of guy that helps little old ladies cross the street or saves a kitten from a tree. When even at the lowest points in his life he still finds it in himself to save a person in need because that's what a hero is supposed to be. (As we saw in the first few chapters when he saves Katsuki, even with everything he put him through) However, I am not so caught up in my own vision on what makes a good hero enough to not see why certain folks would take issue with the characterization. Though some people do tend to forget that Horikoshi is still a relatively new writer, and from a creative writing standpoint I understand the anxiety of brushing up on serious topics and not feeling confident enough to flesh them out in the way you want them too. I just hope with future projects he can finally start to get his wings as a truly confident writer. All I know is that MHA is a mighty HOT fucking mess, but I can't help but love it. Warts and all.

      Thank you! I hope you liked the video. I do agree that both American comics and manga have a really hard time portraying mental health and its effects on people. Especially with some of the deep themes that they cover. Sometimes both mediums tend to just gloss over the aspects of mental health and its effects. Granted you can argue that American comics are worse in this regard considering how Americans have a more positive understanding surrounding mental health compared to Japan (seeing how Japan is notorious for it's incredibly bad mental health care). I only know a little about Matt Murdock so I can't say if Midoriya should have more qualities like him, but I will take your word for it. I totally agree with you that Midoriya was written to have the very sweet neighbor hero character. Personally that is just what I love about Midoriya as a character. I still think that he could battle his own insecurities while being that selfless hero. But I think it would have been interesting to see how Midroiya formed his own ideas of being a hero. Like starting out wanting to be the best hero in the world, another All Might if you will, or to want to be that neighborhood hero that understands that doing the little things like getting a cat down from a tree or help an old lady walk across the street are what's most impactful. I think I forgot that Hirokoshi is a relatively new writer. I guess after all these years I forgot that tidbit. I do think that once Hirokoshi finishes MHA that he will go on to write a better manga. I truly do believe that he's gained a lot of creative writing skills and I don't view him as a bad writer. All in all I just think that he needs to truly finish MHA. I also just wished that he gives the proper consequences to some of the plot points that he either brushes off. Or maybe I'm just saying that because I wish Bakugou had more consequences to his overall attitude and just the things he did in his past. But thank you for the comment!

    Honestly this video made me realize how much of a good protagonist Midoriya actually is I like the show mostly for the world building and I kinda think the show could be better at having Class 1A trying to fix the societies problems
    I actually do like a lot of your commentary and I do think the main weakness of this show is how much certain plots and characters are left on the back burner
    I disagree about Endeavor’s redemption arc I think it makes him one of the most interesting characters and he’s honestly one of my favorite pro heroes in the show it’s also very unique like how often do you see a redemption arc for an abusive parent
    But overall I think you made some valid points I’d like to hear your thoughts on why you didn’t like the Endeavor redemption and the traitor plot and id like to hear more of your let-downs

    • @SleepyHoax
      @SleepyHoax  Месяц назад

      Thank you for your comment! I think that Midoriya is a great main character but many people on the internet tend to write him off due to how much he cried during the beginning of the anime/manga. Yes! I agree it would have been better if the class just addressed society and its problems. When I was there age (ewww! Can't believe I'm pulling that card) my friends and I would constantly talk about the world, it's problems, and how people in government should address that. But that could have just been me.
      Exactly! It hurts when there are plots and characters you as the reader want the story to address but when it doesn't it's the absolute worst.
      I think I want to start off by saying that I don't mind redemption arcs. I think it's much better to have a redemption arc than having a character realize that they were in the wrong and then killing them off. I always feel like killing the character off is a cop out of doing the actual work for redemption. However, for Endeavor, I quite liked the fact that he was a villain. I really liked how it set up that not all heroes are good while not all villains are bad. It showed just how much of a gray world they (or even we as the readers) live in versus the black and white world they perceived themselves to live in. I liked how Bakugou paralled Endeavor in some ways and if Bakugou didn't start walking down a better path he could end up as a hero that was only a hero for the battles and recognition that came with being a famous hero but still be a horrible person. And needless to say, Endeavor was a horrible person through and through. Not only did he abuse his children and neglect them, but his also did years of abuse, manipulation, neglect, unlawful imprisonment (probably), gaslighting, and forcibly marrying his wife (Even forcing her to stay in a mental hospital which I do understand was for her betterment but even after the years of staying there she didn't have a say in whether she wanted to go or not or which one to go to in general which kind of means he has people there watching her and making sure she doesn't stain his reputation essentially). He put his family through extremely horrible things. And to mean when he was getting redeemed it felt as though the manga wanted me to either like him or pity him. To say that he did all this abuse for a good reason and that we as the readers can empathize with his thought process. I just couldn't look at Endeavor and forgive him for everything that he put his entire family through. Just for reference I did not finish the entire Todoroki arc with Dabi (like I said in my video I physically couldn't click on any updates to the manga) so I don't know how the Endeavor redemption arc ends. I just know that it is up to the rest of the Todoroki family if they truly believe that Endeavor has redeemed himself. However, if they proceed to still be a family after all of this then I can't accept this redemption. They have to divorce and Rei takes the kids cause if not then the cycle of abuse can start all over again and it really doesn't show that he has changed for the better. In my eyes him letting the rest of the family go shows a great deal of change. At least those are my thoughts. Do I think people can change? Yes. Do I think abuse victims should stay with their abusers if their abuser is saying that they changed? No.
      As for the traitor arc...well I just didn't find it to be anything noteworthy. Sure the idea of it was interesting don't get me wrong. However, I feel like UA's entire lack of a response to the idea of there being a traitor is so impractical. A school for upcoming heroes, the heroes that are going to protect and save society, a wealthy school as well, doesn't have the capabilities to put preventative measures for a traitorous student or faculty member? They can't do the simple job of giving different groups of people different information and narrow down the culprit based on how the villains reacted to the information they received. The school failed. And personally I don't think Aoyama was an interesting traitor. Don't get me wrong I think the reasons why he was the traitor was impactful. I really empathize with his parents and the decisions that the family made as a whole to save their son from the ruthless life of living quirkless. However, looking back it was pretty apparent it was Aoyama. With how often the character looked at the reader, breaking the fourth wall (one could argue that this was a stylistic choice but I digress), they way he ran away from helping during the arc where the villains kidnapped Bakugou (sorry I'm forgetting the name at the moment) and the fact that he was watching Midoriya sleep from outside Midoriya's window, it really wasn't shocking. I think the only shocking thing to me about the traitor arc was when it was revealed. To me it felt thrown in there at the last second. As if everyone realized that they needed to actually tie this plot point up or else the fans would be super angry considering it was one of the biggest theories at the time. For me, the traitor plot was meh. But I wasn't too obsessed with the idea in the first place like some people were, but I did like the idea of the traitor being Denki just because it would be pretty cool to see Denki who zapps his brain (also why didn't the teachers fix that faster he could be permanently damaging his brain???) be the big bad scary traitor.
      Again, thank you so much for your comment. Sorry you had to read so much but I wanted to sincerely answer your question thus a lot of writing happened.

      @theflingthing21 Месяц назад

      @@SleepyHoax Yeah I think you have some good points thanks for your response btw.
      I personally like Endeavor's redemption but I do understand the whole if his kids and wife don't want to see him again they don't have to. I definitely like the idea of him starting a new family and this time doing it right and I like the not all heroes are good people. However, I think his redemption strengthens Shoto a lot as a character showing that Shoto can forgive him. Season 7 has also FINALLY started giving Endeavor a backstory and I am very happy with it. The fans have also given him a backstory where his father dies and his mother is abusive which I think makes so much sense for his character.
      As for the traitor arc I can see why people don't like it. It does feel very thrown in there. But I definitely agree that it could've been more interesting as another character like Kaminari or even someone with less screen time like Ojiro or Hagakure.

    Its not perfect but it seems your just nit picking. Cant complain about such minor flaws in the story that have no relevance later on. Such as deku teacher not doing anything or the villains being treated wrong. Which makes sense quirks can mutate the body causing people to not look normal what more do you need for horikoshi to explain? And complaining about quirkless people not being talked about is just dumb because only 20% of the population is quirkless? All im saying is your nitpicking the story instead of talking about real plot flaws. And for god sake ida and uraraka are nice kids of course hes gonna instantly feel more safe around them compared to bakugo. All the points your saying is just awful criticism.

    MHA is an amazing series. I don’t understand why so many people like you waste your time making videos on it if you don’t even like it.

    Nah i prefer My Hero academia than Demon slayer and Deku is a better protag than Tanjiro
    And Midoriya having One for all because he's a Shounen MC and i don't care about relatability all i care is badassery and how cool he is

    Here's a problem about the arm chair diagnosis of anxiety: What is there to be anxious about? Getting bullied by everyone just because he has no superpowers? That's a constant. That's to be expected. Why would he be untrusting of people just because he was bullied? There is no reason, even illogical ones, he has to be. Most people bullied, even among those as badly as he is, aren't as weak and frail as you'd like to believe. Some just accept shit is fucked and live on. And I'm not going over the rest.

    Yk u shud really read the manga and THEN make a video like this. Last few chapters actually ended the story in the best way possible and i would personally say its a masterpiece.
