  • In this video, I photograph a Black-capped Chickadee nest using the Sony a1 and the 200-600. I was lucky enough to be around as the nestlings fledged, and caught that on film too! Such adorable birds and a year round resident in Quebec! Hope you enjoyed the video, Happy Birding!

    Stefan, for most of the images, you're using a slow shutter speed and low ISO, with obviously excellent results (and I've watched your Slow Shutter Speed video. Question: Did you have OSS/SteadyShot turned on? My assumption is all these were taken with the monopod and head.
    Also, is the head useful for stills, or primarily for video? If I'm not doing much video, does one need anything extra to go with the Gitzo?
    Many thanks!

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад

      Yes, OSS/steadyshot were turned on while on the monopod. The head works very well for stills. When it comes to video, I’ve been mostly using it for slow motion video, since there still is a bit of movement while using a monopod. I’d still prefer using a tripod for video but as a run and gun setup, this gets the job done for both stills/video. I’ve just been using the monopod/monopod head with no other accessories and I’ve been good. The only thing is you’ll want to make sure your tripod foot is arca-swiss mount (I’m using the Kirk brand tripod foot for my 200-600)

  • @markwalker8374
    @markwalker8374 3 года назад +1

    Stefano, another nice video. I am interested in your gimbal monopod setup. How do you like the Wimberley monogimbal as opposed to say using a lightweight video head? Why did you chose the expensive Gitzo monopod, which looks a bit on the sort side for bird photography. Thanks

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! If it wasn't for the Wimberley head, I wouldn't be using a monopod. It really is the perfect head for what I need. I wanted something stable, compact, and light enough to easily travel with, so the gitzo was an easy choice!

    Great video. I have a nesting pair of Chestnut-backed Chickadees using a box in my front yard. They sure are hard working parents coming by every couple mins with more caterpillars. I'm keeping a close eye on the nest as I'm sure fledging will be soon based on how long I've been watching them feed for. Just as you described, mine have a perch to the left of the box and a perch to the right of the box that they stage on every time before going to the box depending on which side they come from. Last weekend I managed to use the A1 and a really high SS to get photos of them flying into the nest with food and away from the nest with the fecal sac. Not easy but the A1 makes it easier than any other camera.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +1

      Looks like an interesting lens, but no I won't be getting it. The 200-600 size doesn't bother me, I can still hike all day with it. If I would get a lens down the line, it would likely be the 600 f/4 or eventually the 300 f/2.8 with both teleconverters since I'm working more and more in low light situations. But I'm interested to see the results people get with the Tamron. They've been making wonderful lenses for the E-mount.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +2

      Thanks so much! Yes, there's nothing that holds it in place from rotating. The flap that covers the buttons is also pretty flimsy and doesn't allow me to access the buttons as quickly as I'd like. I'm not really using the lens cover to camouflage the lens, but rather as a layer of protection. Since that part of the lens is the least likely to get dinged up when mounted to the camera, I didn't mind removing it!

      Really glad you enjoyed the video! And it means a lot to hear that! Personally, I don't mind the dislikes. What I've learned is there's over 2 billion monthly active users on RUclips, and everyone has different tastes and expectations from a video they watch. If I'm trying to please everyone, I'll end up pleasing nobody. I'm just happy viewers and subscribers are overall responding positively to the content I love to create 😊

      @@StefanoIaniro well said! on another note I shoot with the Sony A7r IV and the 200~600 (stills only) is it worth it in your opinion to buy the A1?

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +1

      Hard to say, it all depends on what you shoot and what your needs/expectations are. Personally, it was the video features of the a1 that justified the upgrade. Since I tend to do video almost daily. I was happy with the R4 for stills, but using the a1 there is a noticeable improvement overall (which there should be for the ridiculous price lol). I think you can still get the same shots with an R4 that you can on the a1. But in some areas, like action/high speed, your hit rate will be higher given the tracking and higher fps. Which can make it easier and/or quicker to get "the" shot you're after in those scenarios. The a1 has many features that are nice to have, but not necessary to get great photos. You really have to weigh the options and see if those features are worth paying almost double the R4.

    By the way, I have a question for you.
    I own a A7RIII and I'm planning to buy the Sony 200-600g. What do you think about that combo for birding? Thanks mate.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much! I haven't tried the R3 with the 200-600 so can't really speak from experience on that one. I've heard some people are happy with the combo, but I'd definitely suggest renting or testing it out first before pulling the trigger to see if it fits your needs!

      @@Pvfotocr Paolo, I've got the A7R3 with the 100400 GM, 1.4 TC. It's not a good set up for BIF, although pretty decent for sessile subjects. The problem is the focusing, especially in low light or dark subjects or small subjects just isn't in the same league at the A9 or even more so, the A1.
      So the answer is the 200-600 is popular, but the body simply isn't optimal for BIF or sports.

      @@StefanoIaniro I've been using the A7r4 & 200-600, it's been most informative to watch you use the same gear. Don't know what I'm going to do if you start using the A1 all the time, I can't afford to upgrade any time soon.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +2

      Gear is only a small piece of what goes into my photos. In my opinion, technique, lighting, knowing my subjects, and editing are all things I find more important than the gear. Does the a1 have more bells and whistles? Absolutely. But focusing on the other 4 aspects have progressed my photography far more than gear upgrades, especially camera upgrades (typically a lens upgrade will produce a much bigger difference). The r4 is a very capable camera 🙂

    Which binoculars are you using for bird watching? It's not on your gear list.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  3 года назад +2

      Hey, I'm using the Nikon Monarch 5's. The reason they're not on the list is I can't really recommend them. They have not stood up well to heavy use in the field. Got a lot of similar feedback from biologists I worked with last summer too. If you're in that price range of binoculars, I'd recommend the Zeiss Terra ED 8x42. It's more expensive but typically goes on sale and you could snag a good deal!
