Hi Ken, it's so funny to watch this. I am 63 and made a tomato sandwich this past Tuesday from my Burpee Big Boy tomato plant. Grew up on these. Has to be white bread like you said too. I am a Mayo dude even though I was raised on Miracle Whip in Chicago in the 60s. S and P and you're ready to go. You just can't make these with store bought tomatoes. No way. This vid made me smile. TY
For more than 60 years I have eagerly waited for the first garden ripe tomato so I can taste that first tomato sandwich of the summer! First, as a kid with my dad, walking in the big family garden every day, checking for that first ripe one! Later on with my new husband in our first little garden. My love of tomato sandwiches has never faded. 😋
I remember the tomatoe sandwich, but I learned later on that you can also make grill cheese an tomato, absolutely delicious, thanks for sharing an oldie but a good one..
Ken, I love your channel. I saw this video and went to the kitchen to make me a tomato sandwich, unfortunately with a store bought tomato. It was good but I can only imagine what great taste a homegrown tomato will give to this simple deligth. Many thanks and keep those videos coming. By the way, I learned to make your potato soup from another of your videos and it was my late father in law's favorite food during his last months before he passed away.
Hey Ken , you are correct homegrown tomatoes taste so much better. Their are so many varieties too. Tomato sandwich with Hellmann's is delicious. Yeah bread is bread as long as it's fresh and if it's not so fresh toast it. You are such a sweetie oh yeah your yeast rolls still can't be beat btw.. Thank you for sharing, maybe I should grow some tomatoes...😁
Ken, you’re taking us back to a simpler time. We grew up in OKC and ate fresh tomato sandwiches, Bologna and fried egg sandwiches. I’d smash chips inside of mine and like you Big Red and a soda called Aspen (apple flavor) were my favorites🤗
Love your super sharp knife, best way to prevent accidents. My cousin and I were just talking about tomato sandwiches and how much we still loved them. This whole video made me smile. Have a great weekend.
Yum. My favorite sandwich growing up was buttered bread, mustard, and sliced onions. We didn't always have sandwich bread but a leftover biscuit was just fine.
As a kid in summer, we'd be running around and playing for hours. At some point a snack was needed and so it was either white bread or a roll with just yellow mustard. One sandwich was just enough to refuel us till dinner. Tomatoes were always grown at home, never store bought, so we all had to exercise patience until they fully ripened. That first one picked was such a treat, red and still warm from the day's sunshine.
We love our fresh tomatoes and make sandwiches all the time. Rutgers is our favorite tomatoes to grow. We always put the extras on a little stand in front of the house for our neighbors!
Oh...my mom grew fantastic tomatoes and every summer we’d eat more than a few tomato sandwiches. Miracle whip and Wonder bread! But we never used salt or pepper on tomato sandwiches. Though If you ate a whole tomato all by itself like a piece of fruit (which we did often) we then used salt. I miss those days!
Dear Ken, mom and dad used white bread, tomato, Miracle Whip, s & p. I used sugar instead of s & p. When I got older, I used wheat bread (toasted or not), Miracle Whip, slice of mild yellow cheese, lettuce and bacon. Or you could put bologna. Yum.
Bread toasted or not! Mayo, miracle whip, or buttered! It’s the best! Yum! No mustard for me either! Wow! I’m lucky 2 of my friends have kept me in tomatoes!
Nice sandwich. I grow 10 r 12 plants every spring still picking now I like the way you waterproof the bread lol. A couple slices of bacon picks it up a few notches too
Tomato sandwiches are still a favorite in our home. Do you every make breaded tomatoes? Growing up, we loved those, too. I've been looking for a good recipe. I think there were just white bread, tomatoes, and butter layered in a dish and baked.
Hi we grew tomatoes until my husband got Dementia sure miss both of them I’m to old to grow anything now 85 means store shopping any they have gone nuts with the prices sure looked good Hod Bless
Ken my good Christian friend, great recipe, I do like the mayo better though, no mustard for me either. We call these big maters "beef steaks maters" in rural Kentucky. I like these sandwiches( we call em' sammiches) we add baloney, regular or fried sometimes , s&p on the maters & you have a super great sammich. I use that bread also, only appx..59 cents a loaf & I can't tell the difference in taste twinxt any others. God bless everyone & please stay safe , btw, I like green spring onions or a chunk of yellow spanish onions to eat on the side with the sammich
I'm in Texas & all along I thought you still lived here! Where do you live now? I have some delicious white bread (Nature's Own Whitewheat) & some farmer's market tomatoes. 2 days ago I did bacon & tomato sandwiches (store was out of heads of iceberg) but later this afternoon I will make a mater sandwich!!! I was raised on MW but these days I prefer mayo. Not sure if I will toast the bread or not but I will do mayo, S&P. YUM YUM!!!!! TFS!
Looks like a good sandwich. To take it over the top, grow your own tomatoes and use Hellmann’s mayonnaise. No matter what you buy in the store will never compete with a fresh garden tomato.
So good with a fresh garden tomato. My grandmother could peel a tomato without much of the tomato coming with it. Had to search for Big Red. I'm in Alabama near Georgia. Don't think it's sold here.
That's a real roll call of tomatoes you've got there, some not known to me growing up in New Zealand and Australia - different varieties. Isn't it wonderful there's so much variety in garden tomatoes!
Garden 12 × 24 feet. Guilty of overcrowding. Done canning 45 quart during August. Looking forward for winter squash and I done for the season. Few eggplant , peppers and green beans too.
Ken, btw, there is someone that goes around & gives a thumbs down to sites if there is not one so don't worry about that thumbs down, just trying to aggravate you pal

Yes, tomato on a grilled cheese sandwich is scrumptious!
Sounds good.
Not much beats grilled cheese with a mater slice.
Homegrown tomatoes and a slice of cheese on homemade bread. We lived on these every summer, all summer long. Very fond memories! Thanks, Ken. :)
Great memories!
Big Red is truly an underrated soda. It’s fantastic with food, especially simple stuff like this tomato sandwich. Great video as always, Ken.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Tomato sandwiches are the best! Garden tomato, mayo, a little salt and pepper, on white bread. So yummy!!! Reminds me of being a kid in summer!
Great memories!

I remember my dad making the same sandwich! It was soooo good! Thanks for sharing your thoughts !
I love tomato sandwiches with Duke's mayo. Also just a plain banana sandwich. Both are cheap to make and wonderful to eat.
Thanks for watching!
We had tomato sandwiches coming up. My mother called them “sunshine sandwiches.” White bread, Mayo, salt and pepper. Heaven!
Good eating!
Always a pleasure Ken, great ideas!!

I've never had breaded tomatoes like you describe. Thanks for watching!
My favorite sandwich! Although with Hellman's.

Grew up in central Texas and no BBQ meal is complete without Big Red.
I agree! 🙂

Enjoy!
Taste delicious !!!
It does!
My granny called them sunshine sandwiches. btw-Much better with ultra soft Wonder Bread, worth it.
Thanks for watching!
Sometimes when I was a kid, we'd take a salt shaker to the garden.
Great memories!
Hi ,Ken I will put cresm cheese and on the tomato I'll put all seasoning of Badia.
Make it the way you like it!
Looks yummy 😋
Thank you 😋

I live in Arkansas now. Enjoy your sandwich!
Ken skip the miracle whip and add crispy bacon a little salt and pepper. If you MUST add mayo Duke’s is the only brand to use.
If you add bacon it's not a tomato sandwich. You might just as well have said, "skip the bread, add a hamburger patty, cheese, and hamburger bun."

😂😂😂! Right!!
I've found mayo/salad dressing to be such a personal taste preference, like mustard or pickle types or brands.
Looks like a good sandwich. To take it over the top, grow your own tomatoes and use Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

Strange comment. The video is about using homegrown tomatoes.

Garden :Brandywine, mule team, Cherokee, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Henderson, martian, San Marzano, roma, golden and Chadwick cherry tomatoes ,
You must have a big garden! Yum...🙂

God did so good when he made white bread, tomatoes and Miracle Whip. He gives us everything for our enjoyment
Thanks for watching!
I made fresh bread 🥪 yesterday and made myself a toasted home grown (pink lady) tomato, mayo, lettuce sandwich. hmmmmmmm
Sounds great!
Prefer Miracle Whip also on tomato sandwich!
Thanks for watching!
White bread 🍞, Miracle Whip, dash of salt and tomates
That's it!
Yummy
🙂
That looks good, but it's missing two important ingredients for me. Fresh crisp iceberg lettuce and crispy apple smoked bacon. Oh my goodness. 8-)
That would make it a BLT. I like those too.
Our tomatoes didn’t do very well this year.
Sorry to hear that.
Pepper makes the tomato sandwich.
I like it on mine...🙂👍
I find it practically a must on all fresh tomato. Second only to salt, of course.
Put some Dukes mayo on it, and you will have something great!
I've never tried putting mayo on top of Miracle Whip before, but thanks for the suggestion. 😋
I’ll take 3 or 4
Me too!
Ken, btw, there is someone that goes around & gives a thumbs down to sites if there is not one so don't worry about that thumbs down, just trying to aggravate you pal
I saw that also. Some miserable loser troll.
No worries. 🙂
A mater sammich.
I like'm with an ice cold glass of milk.
Sounds good!
It’s crazy how slapping a tomato slice between two pieces of wonder bread is considered cooking these days.
It's called making a sandwich. No one said anything about it being cooking. It's amazing how people love to find things to criticize these days.
Big Red? Is it like Coca Cola?
It is a sweet soft drink, soda pop.
