The shallow pool metaphor is to do with Kevin's self-doubt that makes him believe that he isn't a good person like the rest of his family. They have more depth and better strengths, where all of his good qualities are surface-level and shallow. He doesn't believe that he's a good person because he has to work harder at being a good person than he believes they do. He says he never achieved his childhood goal of touching the deep end drain because he doesn't have the right stuff to be a deep end person.

I know this ep is filler to most people & you only found it fine but I found cassidy's storyline super impactful, she comes across more like other ptsd sufferers (people like me with ptsd but not from war) I wish her character was appreciated by people more, the juxtaposition of her screw ups compared to kevin's self sabotage was really beautiful storytelling I felt, shame you never got into her character oh well

This is exactly how I felt about Cassidy, I liked her character outside of Kevin but also as an extension of him and Nicky. I think they placed her perfectly throughout the show to parallel their lives. This episode specifically I found impactful also, the softness of it all, the lingering on shots to show how comfortable Kevin has become with silence. Maybe people wanted to see more dad Kevin and I can get behind that complaint a little, but I just remember the episode having me so immersed watching Kevin‘s growth as a person through his friendship with Cassidy

Still thinking divorce was strange - we weren't shown how they tried again and why it failed, considering hope spot at the end of S3 or S4
