Hornby Trakmat Layout - Model Railway

- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2017
- A simple model railway train set style layout I have been working on in my garage recently. The baseboard is mounted on a pulley system attached to beams on the garage roof, so can easily be hoisted up and stored away when not in use.
The layout started life as the 2002 Hornby GWR mixed traffic set I received as a child. After spending 13 years in storage, I rediscovered the filthy track and baseboard, as well as some old Hornby plastic buildings when moving house and decided to rebuild the layout whilst back from university on a limited budget.
Although the layout isn't exactly packed with operational potential, it has been great for trying out some different modelling techniques such as creating hills, trees, ballasting, weathering and more. It was also fairly inexpensive, as most of the locomotives and rolling stock were second hand, as well as some of the scenery.
Despite the simplicity and lack of realism of this style of layout, they are great for anyone with limited space, or someone just getting into the hobby like myself, before moving onto something larger.
Whilst the track layout is a fairly basic oval, I have never seen such fantastic landscaping, your work is amazing!
Thanks Ian 👍🏻
It was this track layout that sent me on my way to building my own small layout. The tunnel gave a sense of continuity with the rest of the world, the screen meant filming was of a different world rather than a board in the spare room, the tracks in different directions separated the itinerary of each train, the predominant green brought life and nature to a track and the figures and buildings each had narratives to add a tapestry of depth and richness to the train sets. So thanks for the initial shove which got me going.
Thank you, and you’re welcome. I’m glad you got some inspiration and found it useful.
This is the best trackmat layout that I have seen
Thanks very much, appreciate it!
Got that right
Can I ask what u used to model the roads
This is one of my favourite layouts on RUclips - beautiful.
(And one of the few times the backdrop seems to add to the design, not take away from it)
Thank you 👍🏻
This is what model railways are all about. Taking a basic train set oval in a reasonable run of space and turning it into a realistic, well-observed model layout. I think this has as much enjoyment to watch trains run through it, as the most ambitious club layouts I've seen, and a lot nicer than some others. Lovely! You really ought to share your methods of landscape modelling. Your work is beautiful .
I agree with Simon you need to do some videos on your model screeners style it rocks
Very true.
Thanks very much Simon, appreciate it.
This is the schizzel! I'm gonna have a go at doing this myself!
Absolutely! Lovely layout. If this is what I could only ever do...I'd still love this hobby!
Just shows how a simple loop layout can be enhanced using good scenic effects and trains that are not too long.
Cheers Ray :-)
What you have done with this trackmat layout is nothing short of miraculous....I love this vid...stay safe Lewis.......Bob
Thanks Bob 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic layout and ultra realistic landscaping. It's refreshing to see the old hornby layout being used as I think it's still the best one hornby produced. A lot of people avoid it mainly because of the 1st radius curve problem I think, but you have proven that it can still work to great effect, especially for beginners like myself.
Thanks very much Daniel. I agree it’s the best of the track mats, and the first radius curves can indeed be a problem if you’re running anything other than a small 0-6-0 or a 0-4-0. Glad you enjoyed and best of luck with your modelling!
I've just ordered my Hornby Somerset Belle complete with track mat. Your brilliant layout has certainly given this complete beginner something to aspre to. I love it!
That’s great! They are a great way to get started and have a crack at a little layout. Best of luck with it.
What a masterfully succinct layout. Everything seems perfectly placed. Really inspiring.
Thanks very much Ian.
beautifully sweet layout.. i love it ❤️ and the sweet music⭐️🎶⭐️
Thank you 😀
What is the title of the music? Thanks
I'm amazed. Marvellous I would never of thought that was possible within such a small area, yes it looks great and works a treat, well done
Thanks 😀
You're my hero!! Seeing the Hornby trackmat brought to life the way I'v all ways dreamed is just wonderful! :-D Well done!
Thanks Sammy :-)
My son and I have a railway to build....he doesn't know yet as Santa will be bringing it down the chimney later this year, but I think with our limited space, following the track mat will be the best bet. Yours looks superb and is now the inspiration for ours!
Thanks very much Ben. I think it would be the best bet as well. It’s a great way to learn and try out different techniques as well. Best of luck with it mate.
This is some of the best scenery building i have ever seen. Truly inspirational. Well done!
Thanks very much Andy, appreciate it.
This layout is absolutely beautiful
The weathering of the locos and the overgrown landscape give it all that realism
Thank you!
Yes, I AM gorging on your uploads! Another goodie, thank you. And I add my voice to those clamouring for vids about how you do your scenery. I LOVE the track in the yard.
Thanks very much. I’ll aim to have some more scenery vids out soon!
I have a plain 5ft x 4 ft board with 2 loops of track and was disheartened by thinking i couldn't do much with it but this has inspired me . . . . Great Stuff!
Thanks. Glad you liked it 👍🏻
Simple but so very effective; clever design and great scenery. A real treat to watch; thank you for sharing. Stay safe.
Thanks very much Alex.
I’ve been looking to transform a plywood board with track nailed to it and this has really opened my eyes. I keep coming back to it as I love it so much. Lovely job.
Thanks very much. I’ll have to make another video on this little layout at some point.
remarkable transformation from the track mat...amazing what can be achieved
Thanks very much!
Wow! thought I'd check some of your older videos and saw this.
Sure it's just round and round but the scenics make it look sensational for such a simple thing.
Awesome job!
Thanks Gerry. This was a great first project - I learnt what works and what doesn’t for when it came to starting my main layout. Thanks again.
Very Nice little layout with lovely detailed scenery.
More than enough possibilities for running passenger trains, goods trains and shunting.
Simple atmospheric lighting and plain good camera work.
🚂👌🚃🙂🚃👍🚃💨
Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow! What you have done with this limited space is an inspiration!
Thanks very much mate.
Great layout. Done so well.
Thanks!
Love the two guys having a natter by the signal box - exactly the kind of personality I hope to to put into my layout!
Appreciate it Colin. Best of luck with your layout .
I first commented on this layout 10 months ago, and questioned why you only had 58 subscribers, I see your now up to 1200, thoroughly well deserved.
Thanks very much Mike, much appreciated.
Wow! That looks amazing! Especially considering it started out as a train set and a track mat. . . .
Thanks very much, it’s definitely come a long way. Amazing really how the baseboard stayed relatively flat and warp free after all these years!
Your layout is superb, and goes to show what can be achieved with modest equipment & space; don't underestimate your hard work and the result you got! I too am just getting back into model railways after unearthing my own boxes of stuff stored away for far too long, and I too shall be using set-track to conform to the limited space I have available; perhaps I shall post my own efforts when they are done....if they are half as good as yours, I shall be well satisfied. thanks for posting your efforts.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that. You absolutely should! Posting this video was an afterthought, and ended up starting this whole channel. This style of layout is great for learning some new techniques, and finding out what works and what doesn’t!
This is where I see my layout in a year or so. I also started out with the Mixed Traffic set!
Well best of luck with yours!
How did that end up
Vision, determination, and willingness to make a nice looking layout = success!
Thank you!
i havent seen this, but its adorable and certainly joyful to watch. a stereorype layout turned into a functional work of art. well done and. i really enjoyed this one😃
Thank you, I should get this layout out and do another video at some point.
"Lovely layout" the music and the tipa tapa of the wheels on the track. Great.
Cheers Grant : )
Thanks Grant, appreciate it 👍🏻
Wow! Even the layout you made out of the simple Hornby mat is a lot better of than many layouts I've seen!
Thank you very much, appreciate it!
What a lovely little layout. I especially like what you did with the foliage.
Thanks Andrew.
Just shows the real potential of the Trackmat idea. Brilliant.
Thank you Simon, appreciate it.
Inspiring for someone building a similar sized layout! Looks great!
Thanks very much mate, best of luck with yours.
What a nice little railway in such small space :-)
Thanks very much!
I think your layout is brilliant, full of character and is a real miniature world, fantastic.
Thanks Chris!
Ah how this layout went from this trakmat layout to the top quality YDMR as we know it today! Seriously impressive my man!
Thanks! The main layout is a bit of an upgrade from this humble trackmat!
Great layout for such a basic track mat. Just shows that some good scenery can make all the difference. I remember those exact mats when I got my first hornby train set back in 2002 (when I was 6, I got a hornby Flying Scotsman set), now I'm 21, and I'm still into the hobby! Just starting a new layout now, so in a way I've actually got back into the hobby! Great video and layout, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Fraser. I prefer this older mat to the newer version to be honest! Best of luck with your new layout.
Mouldy Raspberry thanks mate, it's going to a basic one though - once I have my own house and a secure income then I'll start a proper one. Yeah I prefer the old mat too.
This layout looks so easy and simple yet it has it all
Thanks very much!
Best tunnel interior I've seen. Great work.
Thanks Mark
Nice work, looks very Somerset and Dorsetish.
Thanks 👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant. A work of art and functional. One of the best small layouts I've seen. The Old Mill Town backdrop is the cherry on the cake. 10/10. (I've used a screen grab as my windows wallpaper it's that good).
Haha thanks Paul. I’m really happy with that backscene as well, the ID ones are great.
Hi Mouldy R. I'm going to order that same backscene. I'm putting together a similar layout with the Hornby Trakmat. Your setup has given me some great inspiration. Cheers!
I like the clickety clack of the wheels on the track.
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Cheers Mouldy Raspberry, I love the layout mate! I'm glad you've gone back to model railwaying! 👍🚄😁👍
Thank you, appreciate it :-)
Beautiful green version of a classic layout 👍
Thank you 👍🏻
A very well made cinema shoot, so simple, but holds the imagination continuously.
Thanks Bernard!
Excellent. Very inspiring. I'm looking at getting into the hobby. You work really is something to aim for.
Thanks Phil, appreciate it. It’s a great hobby!
Lovely, just lovely, thanks for sharing mike
Thanks Mike!
Great looking layout, the scenery is wonderful
Thank you 😀
You nailed the scenery! Really nice job.
Thanks Pat 👍🏻
AWESOME!!!!! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice layout and use of materials to create a lot of textures and a good mix of rolling stock too!
Thanks very much!
No worries. Where did you get the Southern spam can from?
Small, effective and very detailed...brilliant
Thanks very much 😀
That is quite some transformation, almost unrecognisable as being the Trackmat layout and you've even used the pulley system to hang it in you garage. I remember that being recommended in the early Hornby catalogues of the 70's, great work.
Thanks Rob. The pulley was a good idea, very convenient considering there is a lot going on in the garage. I had no idea it was recommended in the old Hornby catalogues!
Stunning, an excellent job!
Thanks Dave 👍🏻
This is such a lovely little layout, wonderful job!
It's inspired me to start working on my own :)
Thank you 😀
It looks so good, especially with the background!
Thanks Tom 👍🏻
All credit to you. Nice piece of work! Nice film. Regards from Germany
Thanks very much!
just brilliant, I think i have the Hornby layout booklet from 1980 that this layout is from, when I built back then it look crap but this is just utterly brilliant, love it
Cheers Seth. Had this layout stored for a while now, but I’ll get it out soon and get another video out.
Mouldy Raspberry I have most of same models in storage I think I should work on a layout similar. The old booking hall station is just a stunning station
Great model layout
Thanks 👍🏻
Shows what can be done ... cracking little layout well detailed simple but very effective
Thanks Chris 👍🏻
Love this, only just found your channel but this is very much my cup of tea 😊
Thanks, glad you liked it!
I have just ordered a hornby Somerset belle as a started set. It’s not dcc but I want to make a channel from starting from the bottom and making my way up. This layout is an inspiration 👍
Thanks Rob, I’ll have to post some more videos of it. Good luck with yours, it’s a great way to learn some modelling skills, it’s what I got started with.
Good luck man can’t wait to see it when u post it
Takes the trackmat layout to a whole new level
Thanks Matt!
From toy to work of model railway art. Goes to show what that trackmat is capable of unleashing.
Thank you 👍🏻
Absolutely stunning layout
Thank you 👍🏻
I love it! It is defiantly inspirational.
Thanks very much Andrew.
A very nice rendition of one of the most common layouts! I plan someday to build a proper layout based on the track mat and the building packs for it
Thanks! That sounds cool, I’m sure there’s all sorts of good stuff you can do with it.
Inspiational is the best way I can describe this!
Thank you!
I've nearly finished the coal yard. It's sort of like yours but not quite. hope you don't mind. You've given me a lot of inspiration thank you.
Of course not mate, I’ve copied plenty of great layouts! Glad it’s coming along.
This layout is so good it has no dislikes
It does now! Thank you.
A perfect demonstration of a simple but attractive layout. Something for others to tackle during weeks of self isolation! Really good scenic work enhanced by the dramatic back scene (Welsh Valley?). Congratulations.
Thanks very much John. Absolutely!
Mouldy Raspberry Totally agree with John. I’ve literally taken up the hobby since the whole Corona thing started and I’m stuck at home, and this is the kind of result I’m aiming for.
If you wouldn’t mind, I have a couple of questions for you. Hopefully they aren’t too newbie 😂
1. When you say Trakmat, do you mean it’s based on the trackmats included in the Train Set box?
2. I’m assuming this is the larger Trakmat that you have to order separately?
3. Is the track actually laid ON the trakmat and covered with scenery or just used as a guide?
4. What size is your layout board?
I’m thinking of using a plywood board that can be put on a table then leaned against a wall or in the shed until I have a dedicated space.
Sorry for all the questions, it’s just that this is one of the only proper layouts I’ve seen that looks within my limits size wise. Whether I’ll ever be able to create scenery like yours is a whole other conversation 😎
Thanks
Rob.
Very lovely and well coordinated.
Thanks!
Cracking job done, loved it
Thanks very much Colin, appreciate it.
Very impressive and great inspiration.
Thank you 👍🏻
This is probably among the 1% best Trakmat layouts
That’s very kind of you to say so, thank you.
Great effort, this looks incredible and has given ideas for a layout (albeit it will be no where near this level).
Thank you - best of luck with it!
Awesome. Really inspiring! I am currently starting on a small 0 gauge build. But here's the catch. The train is made of tin and runs on clockwork. No electrical wiring! I even got some tin buildings to go with it.
Going to combine realism with a toy like effect.
That sounds right up my street, I hate wiring! That will be great I reckon, really unique.
@@MouldyRaspberry i.imgur.com/BTOcfh5.jpg This is what i managed to whip up in 6 hours. It runs on 00 gauge and has a clockwork train made during ww2. Size of diorama is 100 x 50 cm. Still working strong every day on it.
This is awesome! I'm thinking of recreating this!
Thanks 👍🏻
A true artist at work
Thanks Ross 👍🏻
Very Cool, well done!!
Thank you!
Wow this absolutely awesome! Wish my railway looked like this -_-
Thanks 😀
Nice to see the old model railway.
Thanks Kelly
Wow that’s amazing!
Thanks very much!
Your welcome
This has taken a simple Hornby Trakmat to a whole new level. I hope someone at Hornby has seen this. You could do a video on the creation of the"Dry Stone Walling". Just an idea.
Hours of fun. Switch on and watch the trains go by. Bliss.
The dry stone walling on this is actually a Javis product, they do all sorts is styles of walls (I’ll include a link). It looks really great when weathered a bit and blended into the scenery but only when used on flat areas as it’s not flexible. On my main layout I used a mixture of cat litter, plaster, PVA and water, painted grey and given a black wash. I could certainly do a video on that! Thanks for the comment.

Just shows the simple 6x4 layouts are awesome
Agreed! Thanks 👍🏻
Love the layout currently building the same design I just need the curved point and then I'll get my old layout up and start new 😁
Thank you 😀 Good luck with yours!
@@MouldyRaspberry thanks 😊
That looks amazing
Thanks!
I don’t know how this layout is doing these days but I’d love to see more of it in the near future. I’m hopefully gonna make another layout on my own this time and was hoping to start simple with the trakmat route.
It’s sill going strong! I’ll do an update on it once I’ve finished my current project.
Mouldy Raspberry amazing!
Brilliant the same mat i am using. Very good to drive new starters like me.
Thanks Phil - glad you found it useful.
LOL follows the same progression I’m making. But I will also be returning to the Hornby layout as per the feature layout in the 1978 catalogue with my daughter when she gets to say 5 and will appreciate the magic. In the mean time I’m back to my next video on wiring bi LED signals to cobalts. Stay safe
Very nice layout 🚂
Thank you 👍🏻
You are one hell of a skilled modeller.
Thanks! 😀
@@MouldyRaspberry credit where it’s due buddy. 👏👍
How does this lack realism this is amazing
Thanks 👍🏻
Beautiful 🤩
Thanks!
its lovely layout! a little small but wonderfull
Thanks Steven 👍🏻
@@MouldyRaspberry you're welcome!
