The ultimate ending to this would be Mitch stringing the leafs along to free agency and then signing with......the New York Islanders. Playing the reverse uno card that Tavares played and the universe is again in balance. Then Mitch wins the Stanley Cup with the Islanders next year after Zack Hyman wins it this year. Brendan Shanahan gets fired and the Leafs hire.....Brian Burke again to help start the rebuild....

I *LOVE* this you guys...I've been an EA Sports 'NHL' player since the first iteration on Sega Genesis in 1993. OMG the fun of it all! But watching these 'highlights', you SERIOUSLY have to do some slider adjustments to make the game play *SO* much more realistic. It takes some effort, but before you start a season you can also (if you care to play a game that *truly* emulates actual NHL hockey) adjust each player's ridiculous agility and puck-handling and endurance ratings, and bump up every player's 'defensive awareness'. That, combined with some game slider adjustments, makes the EA sports game SO incredible!!!

but I don’t think it is though honestly. Any trade with Mitch involved is a loss and we’ve got to accept that if we do trade him. The biggest value we get back is cap space so hopefully we can sign three big son of a bitches on theback and right handed.

@@EminemDaGoatTerrible take. Players are valuable assets that a team earns through the draft or trade for by giving up other assets. Losing one of the top 3 assets for nothing is suicide and there is no chance that this will happen. The people in charge are to smart for that.

@@johnsummerhill8323yes but leta not act like other teams havent lost valuable assets in free agency before. Ita just the nature of the game. You gain and lose guys in Free Agency all the time, so "losing" a trade isnt that big of a deal if it frees up that cap space.

The play book is very simple. Every player going into their last year ALWAYS has A career high in points. The game plan will be to play him 23 minutes A game. Give him the puck. Put him on Austin and Willy’s line. He’ll be on 120 points pace and they force him out at deadline. Dangle A cup contender in front of his nose and he’s gone.

I've only attempted to be GM's with the Leafs. Obviously salary cap on no created players and all that stuff. My second attempt I won the cup. The first thing I did when I started the BAGM mode is trade Marner and a first round pick to Boston for Charlie McAvoy. I also traded for Mackenzie wieger. With McAvoying wieger as my first pair. I traded Tavares to Colorado for Atari lickkinen (speech to text) and treated for a goalie. Can't remember who but like a 86 overall guy. I use the remaining 8ish mil in cap space to pick up a center and a winger. Matthews won the con Smyth, Nylander put up the second most points, McAvoy put up the third most. Mcavoy was an absolute monster for me and moving Riley down to the second line gave us two unbelievable lines of defense

I still think Leafs should seriously entertain trading Matthews. His cap hit is so high and his trade value is probably highest it's ever going to be, that it will probably better the team instantly and then after next year, you are down with Marner and Tavares. You build your team around Nylander and go for playoff success rather than points and goals in the regular season.
But hey that's just me thinking aloud. Only one I'd say should be safe atm is Nylander, he has again and again shown to have the right attitude for playoffs while others have missed the ball constantly.

BS on the Marner trade. If any team wants Marner as a last piece for a cup then they don’t care if Marner wants to stay in Toronto or not. Case in point Tkachuk. He made it very well known he was leaving and Calgary still got Huberdeau for him who at the time was a top 5 scorer. Yeah it didn’t work out for Calgary but at the time the haul was considered very good for Tkachuk. The guy on the left just likes to hear himself talk because mostly verbal diarrhea comes out of his mouth. The leverage talk is all crap, if a team really wants Marner then they will give up good pieces for him.

It really upsets me how so many have turned on Marner and how they can't get him out of town fast enough. I agree that the Leafs core 4 have not lived up to the potential in the playoffs, but to blame it on Mitch is not correct. Like it or not, since the 2016-2017 season, Marner has scored more points in the playoffs than any other Leaf, and has 639 points in 576 regular season games (12th best PPG in the NHL). In the last 3 seasons, he also Leads the Leafs in Playoff points and has 281 points in 221 games (7th best PPG in the NHL). This guy is one of the best players in the NHL. Why you would want to dump such a player. When it comes to the playoffs, if you want to be bold, you should be on Matthews case. The guy had 69 goals in the regular season (.85 GPG), but 1 in the playoffs (.20 GPG). In the past 3 season, Matthews scores at a .741 GPG clip during the regular season and .434 in the playoffs. Marner has scored at a .412 clip in season and .24 in the playoffs, so Matthew's drop off in the playoffs it greater than Mitch's. What they should have done was move Nylander last year instead of extending him. Even this past year, which was Nylander's best, Marner still had a higher PPG. In a couple years, Leafs fans will regret running Marner out of town, because this guy will continue to produce at an elite level and I predict, a level higher than that of Nylander.

I though the point of 8 year contracts (Hellebuyck conversation) was that player gets more safety (in terms of earnings) but team gets to sign them at lower cap hit. I got the impression that Hellebuyck signed at discount for 8 year = isn't that exactly how it is supposed to be? Get ready for loooong CBA negotiations when owners start to argue for 5 year max deals again if the extra years don't lower the AAV.

Yeah neither is a single habs fan buddy... on the topic of 70+ point players Price played with: Plekanec, Domi, and Kovalev(IN HIS ROOKIE SEASON) that's it. That's the list. the whole list. all of it. every single player. and they all only did it once. The only one to do it from 2010-2020 was Domi in 18-19 where he had 72 points.
Which also means the only 70 point player Bergevin EVER gave Price was Max Domi. Which was also 20+ points better than any other season Domi has ever had.

I honestly don't get this. In a world where Mitch Marner makes $11 mil, why are we talking about Igor Shesterkin taking less than that? Would anybody in the entire NHL world say that Mitch is a more valuable player to have than Igor? I'm a Bruins fan and it's crazy to me that Jeremy Swayman's extension will probably only make him the 3rd highest paid player on the Bruins (or maybe lower after the off season). Why aren't NHL goalies paid like NFL QBs? Igor should be the highest paid player in the NHL after this playoffs.

OK, the Marner talk is out of hand and I guess we'll have to get used to it staying out of hand. But I was disapointed that Steve--who constantly mentions Covid--did not seem to realize that most of those great player contracts were signed post-Covid. Had Covid not happened, Marner's contract would probably look about right in the NHL. He's been lucky in that he avoided the Covid salary contraction: he signed before it started and after it, we hope, ended. Not his fault. I'm not declaring Marner blameless; but let's keep the facts straight. You can't compare pre-Covid top contracts with top contracts signed during Covid. Or signed today.

As a Leafs fan it's sad but true to realize the best news for the Leafs are that the Blue Jays REALLY suck....
