Thank you as always. Both of these videos were very interesting. The old term for those stretch of roads would be "spurs". Nice to see that they are still around. Thank you again.
Oklahoma 266 offered alot of character with this video. Mayor offer a very interesting comments on history of black towns. Always your furry little friends are the icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing these adventures, John.
I love those roads that are less traveled. Loved those old historical schools. So cool looking. Gymnasium was really cool❤❤ Thank you John. Love your videos my friend
Thank you for another informative and entertaining video. The Lake is likely why route 266 does not connect to Route 66 any more. The zinc and lead mining nearby caused high lead levels in the soil and acid water in some areas further north and east of this area. Those issues may have led to the towns decline.
Future road trip suggestions: U.S. 82, Gainesville to Wichita Falls U.S. 77 from Norman to OK state line (Thackerville) U.S. 177 Madill to Shawnee There are historic towns with interesting histories and scenic routes.
The Native American actor Will Sampson is buried in the Grave Creek cemetery in Hitchita. He was featured in several memorable movies, including One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Outlaw Josey Wales.
I covered a few juco basketball games at Connors State when I was a sports writer for the Fort Scott Tribune. I was told that Oklahoma established several junior colleges in small towns such as Warner to serve rural areas as agricultural schools.
You're getting closer all the time to where I had four generations from Poteau Oklahoma. I live in Oregon now, and alas, none of my family lives in OK, but you're heading in the right direction! As you include cemeteries in your enjoyable travels, it's one place where our relatives stay put!
Hey Coach. Some small and some not so small towns. I like the quiet,I,m not used to it, must be nice. The cowboy tribute was good and the Black towns are important history. The remaining concrete bleachers is a good idea. The new dogs encounter was a good vibe, We give all a 4.4 out of 5 for canine attitude rating, especially that big one in the first sighting.....Safe Travels.
The Grave Creek cemetery was very interesting. The structures over many of the graves is intriguing and the question why is it done.. Enjoyed seeing all the rock constructed buildings. From an area with few trees if shows ingenuity on the part of the towns folks. 266 might be a short ride but it was long on history. Great one again John
Great trip, John.. i enjoyed it very much.. The dogs at the end were watching you, kinda like guard dogs for the cemetery. Ha! Sure were nice looking towns. Till next time. Happy trails to you and God bless.
Interesting video. What I really like about the small towns are the pride they show in their towns. They take care of the buildings, churches, and schools. Pretty territory with lots of trees. Love these side road trips whether or not you find a town where one used to be. So much history in all parts of our country and you keep bringing it all to light. Keep up the good work. 😊
Our group met the mayor on a trip 5 or 6 years ago. A very nice man we very much enjoyed visiting with. Our group includes a professor who retired from Connors. Great video as usual.
Good video. This area is not too far from where I grew up in Oklahoma. One thing you may not know is that when Troy Aikman was in high school, the mascot was a hen. The Henryetta football team was known as the "Fighting Hens". Probably caused a lot of laughs until the opposing team learned what a good quarterback Troy was.
@@anitasimmons3599Yet those old overhead bridges have a wonderful beauty to them. They and the old pony truss bridges were everywhere when I was young. But there was.a.presidential administration that had a department head that wanted all this kind of bridges gone, and many were replaced. They were concerned about safety through both the age of the bridges, and how narrow many were. Which was probably right, but it was hard to see them go. And they were narrow! I lost both west coast mirrors on my truck within a second on the old Iowa highway 70 bridge across the Iowa River, which was an old overhead. Another truck was over the centerline, and his driver's side mirror hit mine about the same instant that the passenger side mirror hit the bridge side beams. They were a tight squeeze. But I still have pictures that I took of that old bridge before it was torn down after a replacement was built. The old Todd's Ferry House was also taken out for the new bridge. An old lodging house for people crossing the river by ferry boat before bridges were built. Two old landscapes lost.
I been to Henryetta, Dewar, eufula a year ago. Love all the murals Just this last summer I went to Western Oklahoma, Alva, Fairview, Woodward, selling, elk city and route 66. I'd like to go back to Oklahoma but it will probably be next summer.
Good people living in OK. Spent time in Norman and surrounding during school and I met/knew some really interesting smart people that were simply nice and community oriented. Before I deleted FakeBook, 25% of my "Friends" reside in OK. (I moved back to FL '89.)

Your nonchalant use of "absorbed" is troubling. The following statement is a similar example: The coach was absorbed by the quivering, massive blob and was never seen again......😉

Thank you. Amazing how those route 66 sideroads look like more authentic Americana today than the actual route 66.
Finding the original bridge was a nice surprise.
Yeah I almost missed it!

Yep! I put “spur” in the title - definitely an interesting piece of history!
@TravelwithaWiseguy it's ashame, no remembers the spurs. Sometimes they have the most interesting things of all. Thank you again.
I agree! I felt that way about the US 166 spur in Kansas too.

If I was a kid living in the area of the old bridge. Would have definately commenteered it as a fort. Awesome find.😎👍
That would be cool! 😎

Thank you! Yes actually the company that worked there was related to Picher, OK - which is one of the most toxic places in the country.

Nice! Yes I could have stayed and chatted with him for a long time!
Nice drone shot of the eight man football field and Langston University is the only Historically Black College left in the state of Oklahoma.
Thanks Coach, another good one. Keep taking that road less traveled- ❤️🙏😎👍
That's the plan! Thanks!
I went and listened to that song "I ain't in Checotah anymore." and it really gave me a feel for watching this video.
Actor Will Sampson from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is buried in Hitchia
I saw that after I visited - but you can see his headstone just briefly when I’m there.
I'm a proud Okie and love what you're doing. New sub and thanks for teaching me a lot about my own home state.
Awesome! Thank you!

There's something sad about unused Bridges.
The caral rail guard rail on the approaches was neat.
Very true!

Lots of nice little towns and great buildings! Interesting stretch of America!
I went to high school in Checotah in the 70s. The rivalry with Eufalla never ended. Connor’s State was also stolen from Checotah.
John, thanks so much for that video! Awesome as always, appreciate all that you do! Keep em coming.
I think I saw somewhere that Oklahoma has more dispensaries per capita than any other place in the world. I believe it.

In Checotah there was a Katy Rail Road sign. At one time there was a Katy Railroad that ran through KEYES in Cimarron county
I also seen another Four Corners. There is also one in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. There is two different Keys and Keyes.
Very interesting video. Thanks for taking us along. I love roads less traveled.
You aren’t too far away from where I was raised near Mcalester Ok.
Very cool 😎
Hi john cool old dx station it a shame the other one was being pulled down . Cheers mate 🇦🇺
I have ancestors buried in Bennet community cemetery. From 1800s and early 1900s.

Wonder if that Llama store was just the name of the store or it was a place that sold actual llama related stuff.

So many First Baptist Churches …
First maybe 😂 Finally dogs!! Very interesting, lots of history
Congrats! Yes it was nice to see the doggies 😊
Coach, hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Will you get to see your family?
Do you think Carrie Underwood helped put Checotah on the map, so to speak? Since it's numbers are going up?
Wow! That school has only been closed for 12 years and it looks like that? Yikes.
