I think some people forget that in game this song plays in ONE area, and a short area too. Yes you go through it like 4-5 times during the game's story, but even then it's unlikely you're going to be there for longer then 5 minutes total, and yet this is one of, if not the best pieces of music in the entire game.
It was a perfect storm. IIRC, this was the first big project for Mitsuda, so he had a lot of music he was working on and polishing already put into the soundtrack. His later stuff is still great, Chrono Cross especially, but there isn't a dud tune in the whole Chrono Trigger. I don't like 2300 A.D. over world ... but that's because the music cuts out. This said, I loved running around the world as a kid, not even doing anything. I went to Guardia Castle so much it's ridiculous.
@@benabaxter that's the hallmark of good RPG music. it makes you not only not care about retreading the same maps over and over, you downright look forward to it.
Technically three different areas (Guardia Forest, Cursed Woods, and the wooded area with the blue pyramid near Medina) but yeah, all are ridiculously small and visited sparingly. You have to WANT to hear this whole song to actually hear it. It's criminally hidden and if you don't slow down for it you'd never realize how satisfyingly complex it can be for such a forgotten early game track. Secret of the Forest is my absolute favorite and not talked about enough along the likes of Corridors of Time or the other popular tracks. It's so calming and serene. Mitsuda made an absolute banger here and I can't help but stop and stand in Guardia Forest for ten minutes or so at the beginning of every playthrough.

Yatsunori Mitsuda will forever go down as one of the greatest video game composers to ever live. Even other great game composers like Koji Kondo and Toby Fox paid homage to this incredible man
You do realise Yatsunori Mitsuda took a bunch of sample music and just changed the sound of an existing tune? I watched a video where someone managed to get most of the original music he took as 'inspiration' and whipped up new soundtracks under a deadline.
Nevermind your musical talent, having access to all these instruments and all the work and equipment put into recording and editing these videos is almost as impressive as your playing. Congrats, love your channel! Please keep doing these videos!
I've played Chrono Trigger for decades now, and it's music is what transports me into the game's world. Luke, this was a fantastic cover. I closed my eyes while I listened, and was transported into this world that I love. Well Done.
CHRONO TRIGGER YEEEEEAH never failing to miss sir, this is beautiful, nostalgic, whimsical, worth laying down on the ground looking upwards just enjoying the music. and as always, the diversity of instruments is captivating, and seeing winds playing strong parts of the song is always a delight. and thanks for sharing the forest and nature footage
Chrono Trigger might be almost 30 years old, but it never ages. Your cover is phenomenal, I could listen it in loops for hours. Can't wait to see more of this OST on your channel
Chrono Trigger has such an amazing soundtrack and this cover was beautiful. I, like many others, REALLY hope you'll do more Chrono Trigger songs in the near future!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the mixing. Normally wind instruments at this pitch make my ears wanna bleed but everything here is so soft and nice. Beautiful rendition 😮
Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, and Motoi Sakuraba made my childhood. And teens. Still love them all now that I'm in my 40s. Honorable mention to Michiru Yamane! Would love to hear more from any of them.
The nature sounds remaining for so long at the end really adds to the listening experience, reminds you to slow down a bit and take in the environment.
C-Trigger definitely has one of the best soundtracks to a dramatic, immensely powerful storyline ever crafted. Over the decades, I've always held to the belief that the game, script, characters, and so forth were "good"... but the MUSIC... was bloody EXEMPLARY. :) Without this kind of score, the game and its semi-cartoonish storytelling (not necessarily a bad thing, btw!) wouldn't have been as powerful.
C’est tellement envoutant et doux. On entendrai presque le bruissement d’un cours d’eau et des feuilles dans les arbres. Je trouves ça poétique. C’est magnifique. Merci pour ce morceau.
I don't know anything about Chrono Trigger, but this arrangement is lovely, another testament to your astounding abilities. I know your career and hobby are very different paths, but it'd be great to see you scoring a game or film/show some day. The dedication and hours of work are evident.
Now THIS is why I play the double bass. That dense, woody, sometimes Smokey and absolutely serene timbre… you just can’t get that sound out of any other instrument.
Chrono trigger soundtrack will always have a place in my heart Special shoutout to this one, shcala's theme and zeal palace, but all of them are such masterpieces I still keep them in my spotify and youtube list
Thank you so much for putting so much effort into this lovely piece! I loved the bawu, what a great addition to this piece. It's "breathy" in a way that really adds to the piece
Oh wow this is beautiful!! If you plan on doing more Chrono Trigger, maybe a Wind Scene interpretation would be interesting from you! Amazing work as always 💜
that was incredible. I was mesmerized by the whole track, but the part where it all swells and the french horn and a clarinet and all the other instruments, that was intense
Luke this is NEXT level stuff, gives the vibe of a real remaster/remake and has the level of polish you hear in jrpg’s today. If the pfp isn’t obvious I’ve been here since your Thomas Days and it’s so awesome to see the growth with your covers and how versatile you are as an artist
It's beautiful, I hope this sets a precedent and we start seeing more Chrono Trigger covers. Personally I would like a version of The End Of Time in a Waltz style.
Wow, I try to find all covers of Chrono Trigger songs and yours by far has been the most faithful reproduction of this song I've ever heard. You did an amazing job.
Beautiful. Everything sounds like what you imagine they sampled for the SNES sounds. Like the lofi-ness is a fog that has been lifted, now being heard clearly.
I love all of your covers!!! Even though I haven't played all the games or even heard the songs that you cover! Your covers really are a fantastic way to experience music for the first time
Bro, I have been listening to the 8 hour version of this OST since I was 17... You do not know the joy I felt when I heard the strings picking a familiar tune
Ok, you got me. I wasn't expecting it to sound so full about a quater in the song. If anything this shows your understanding of mixing, and understanding of the instruments you play. This song has always interested me as a child despite every song is a DAMN BANGER in that game.
This is a masterpiece, Chrono Trigger is my favorite game, this is my favorite song on it, and i love playing it on my bass Thank you for such a great cover, i aspire to be a musician as good as you someday
Wow. This is magical!! This is absolutely my favorite cover of this song I have ever heard, you recreate the feeling of the original in a way that doesn't feel foreign! When the piano was introduced at 0:50 i got goosebumps
My favorite piece from my favorite game played by one of my favorite music RUclipsrs. Can't get much better after a long day at work. Excellent job man

Luke casually beating the record of Chrono Trigger cover with the most unique instruments
2:50 using the upright bass like that to get that sound is so smart!!! I've seen it done with a conga slide but your way of recreating it is so cool!
omg hiiiiii
A shock to see my two favourite composers and arrangers on this one video.
Love your music carlos!
Thanks Carlos! It was one of those weird little sound puzzles and that's what I came up with😂 looking forward to seeing you perform at VGM con!

Yatsunori Mitsuda will forever go down as one of the greatest video game composers to ever live. Even other great game composers like Koji Kondo and Toby Fox paid homage to this incredible man
What's the little flourish they sometimes use in their songs? Starts high, holds for half a beat, and quickly drops down three notes?
@@GwynC it's simple
Mitsuda lick
Kondo, Mitsuda, Sugiyama, and Uematsu. Can't rank them (Uematsu is my favorite lol), but they are the pantheon of RPG composers.

Chrono Trigger has one of the most cinematic soundtracks of any game in my opinion. So glad you chose to do this! Love this cover!!
It really does!
