OMG!!! I got my Lil Dude in the mail today. Sean, the quality of this mast is awesome! Thank you so much for going the distance to get these made for us. I use the "take my money" saying all of the time but this truly fits. As a ham, thank you for your commitment to the ham community. 73, N2QKK
Thank You so much! I hope you enjoy everything and I look forward to getting these out (hopefully sooner than the expected ship date :) ). Have a good one.
I’m guessing we’ll just have to make do with comparison videos that will conclude it’s best to have one from each of you (I’ve one here & now one on order)
I'm uncertain it will fit internally, vertically. I need to print one up right meow. www.printables.com/model/903785-antenna-mast-pole-tip-split-ring for anyone wondering. I'll mock up my though ton the 6mm section and snap you a photo!
Just ordered one! The Carbon 6 seemed too flimsy for me and the Explorer mast increased by $20 and went out of stock immediately when I wanted to get it… Little dude 6 was a no brainer :)
Good work Sean. I highly recommend a cross or circle top clip for attaching a mini pulley or similar device for attaching a dipole, OCFD or EFHW with Kevlar style thin diameter antenna. I dont think it's a good idea to hook up your Nelson 14 GA to any lightweight mast. It would be bending and drooping everywhere. At nearly 20ft your mast gives you the option for raised radial(s) allowing it to be directional to a degree without the huge radial spread on the ground. My only issue and I suspect others too is dropping the mast and fracturing the brittle glass/carbon fiber weave. Lord knows that's been the demise of many 9' flyrods. You don't find out until you get a fish and it's snaps at the first impact fracture. Maybe you tested the impact resistance, a function of gel coating quality? I hope to finally POTA this year and besides a battery, I need a mast, spike with 2' sleave for mast and yes, one of your kits adjusted to random wire inverted L with a 9:1 transformer and 4000 ohm CMC at the end of the feed by the radio. If I tested I would logically buy or borrow your test rig at Moraine Hills user in your company wearing a clean shirt. Cheers neighbor! Craig
Looks like a handy mast for a SOTA or POTA . I am looking for a long fiberglass one. and found a few long enouth buts $$$ have to wait. I made a 5/8 wave at 20 meter vertical that is US 39 Feet tall. Using a 4:1 UNUN. works super and multi band. I ran as slooper only having 10 meter mast . The 20.5 ft and 25 Ft wire works as we.. 73

How much wiggle room is between the inside of the cap and the collapsed sections? I typically add a replacement fishing rod eye to the tip of my poles and I add a tether to the cap itself. Will that be possible for me to do with your design?
@MoseRUclips I thought I responded saturday, but it seems not. About 3mm as is, but there's options to expand the room, I which I'm working on a video today
I am truly looking forward to this mast. I just have one question. I am using one of those amazon fishing pole for the field and it is literally like trying to push a wet noodle across a dry table and bends at the second section from the bottom. From the video, this looks a lot more um... firm. Can this one hold the wieght of like say a roll up slim jim and the wight of the coax say RG-319? Just curious.
Great question and sorry for my delay. It should be fine. I am piling up video ideas and after my next video (ground mounting solutions), I will mount various antennas to see how they look. But again, I cant see it being too much of an issue. I'll probalby have it out later next week.
I should have read all the comments on this post before answering, hah. I would say that's a great point - The jpole being vertical to the carbon fiber could introduce issues. ruclips.net/video/3oR4qRUVoss/видео.html
Quick question: Did you try using this as a vertical antenna, or is this only intended for a sloper or inverted V, config? If so how did the carbon fiber effect it? I'm definitely interested either way. Thanks!
Verticals next to carbon fiber will interact with each other. In the past I have tested how carbon interacts, non scientifically. It is not unusable, but there will be hurdles and effect your radiation pattern, most likely ruclips.net/video/3oR4qRUVoss/видео.html Here is my testing with the my 25 ft mast ruclips.net/video/3oR4qRUVoss/видео.html. I can probably do more thorough testing in the future. Thanks!
I have bought 7m fiberglass fishing pole for around 30 Euros at the local store. Used many times as portable vertical. Can't see any reason for paying expensive stamp on this one. .
Yeah the lil dude 6 is stiffer and stronger, you mention doing verticals I think this can do an endfed sloper or efhw in an inverted vee. I am going to see if I can use it with a lightweight dipole maybe even a light weight uhf yagi up top. Also the pack down dimension of less than 16” is more portable than the collapsible fishing poles. But if those things are not worth the additional cost to you, to each there own
Nice mast! Shipping and taxes to Norway right now may be more than the mast itself, but it looks like a solid piece of kit. Its now on my wishlist. 😎 You can actually use carbon fiber masts for verticals as well, as I show in the link below, but yes, the carbon will interfere with the antenna wire.
