Bolt Action has a tried and tested set of mechanics that well-loved by wargamers. The Dice-In-The-Bag mechanic is one that throws some fascinatingly tense moments into the mix when playing your games. It's good to see that the third edition of Bolt Action hasn't strayed far from its original mechanics. It's great that it has been tightened up for both newcomers and veteran players.

JMHO, the proofreading needed to be better. The cut and paste way things were written caused a lot of errors. As far as the overall rules changes. The plane rules are still sub par. Needed to up the number of hits to drive off, 3 is just too low 6 would be better, especially with the new HMG shots being upped. You will be hard pressed to find anyone using aircraft because this wasn’t fixed. Machine guns are still broken. Machine guns being cheaper and immune to insta kills is good, but they are still not fixed. A .50 cal should not shoot faster than a MG42, one had a cyclic rate of 500-600, the other 1200-1300. Even with “Buzzsaw” the MG42 doesn’t feel right as currently expressed in the rules. The machine guns should all have been made to shoot 6 shots, MMGs should have got +1 pen against infantry, and HMGs +1 pen against everything. This would reflect the rate of fire better and more accurately reflect the deadly consequences of being in the sights of the MMG. Otherwise the rules changes are good.
Disagree that the HMG and MMG should get different number of shots.
For gameplay it’s easier to calculate the halving of the shots for vehicles, and on a real life note (coming from my experience as a U.S. Marine) is the machinegun rate of fire is limited in practice by barrel changes, ammunition supply, reloading and disruption of aim. Essentially, the very high cyclic rate of fire of an MG-42 isn’t much of an advantage because of the other limitations, while the M1919A4, M2HB, Vickers, Maxim as well as most modern machine guns like the M240B and PKM all shoot around 500-650 rounds per minute at the cyclic rate, but only 100 per minute at the sustained rate and 200 per minute at the rapid rate. The changes to MMGs and HMGs are good in my opinion for both gameplay and realism.
@@jonathanbirkeland1085 the German squad was built around the mg42. Everyone carried ammo and the barrel change was a lot faster than many others. And as far as halving the shots why not 4 for the hmg just as easy to calculate. But upping the shots to 6 especially when almost all American vehicles mount them and can fire at full rate vs aircraft. They made it much better when compared to the light auto cannon that only gets 2 shots. Both have the same ap rating and range. The only avantage for the cannon is its HE. Again I think they didn’t do enough for the MMG, nothing really for the LMG, and shot way over the mark on the HMG. And we will without a doubt see American armies loaded to the nines with as many HMGs as they can squeeze in. Infantry, soft skins, aircraft, lightly armored vehicles all will be chewed up. Heavy weapon platoons with 5 that can’t be sniped of the table, shoot 48”, and are good against everything will quickly become meta while the changes for the other machine guns will see little effect on their being taken. The changes I suggested would make the other MGs useful and competitive against the auto include HMG.
Kudos Alessio for coming out and explaining changes. The human element of any tweaks and the thoughts behind them as well as the thought process makes it much more approachable.
Think I'm finally gonna get into this game. Like the sound of the direction it's taking, its going on the Christmas list unless I win a copy of course 😂
"Less weight on the brain" works for me!
I watched another interview with him about his career. I like his rule writing philosophy.
What about all the mistakes in the new rulebook? How did they get missed
I think in sheer time spent bolt action 2nd edition is probably the game I have played the most, even with its questionable bits it was still a very playable game that you could just roll some dice and have a good time with, excited to get my hands on 3rd edition
The poor level of proof reading is scandalous...
I like that they're beefing up the amount of unit profiles that are in the book. No one wants to have buy another book when getting into a game when that money could be going towards more plastic crack.
Thank you for the incredible job you do for the wargaming hobby. Bolt Action is one of the best designed games...primarily because of the Order Dice. Thank you Warlord Games and OnTableTop!
I love that they gave the rules an update and made needed changes. I received my book yesterday so finally getting to read it all myself.
However, I'm disappointed by the lack of quality of the minor factions lists. Cramming multiple units into the same box just looks bad and can be confusing, surely it doesn't take that much extra effort to give each unit its own box, like the major factions get.
I'm so glad I just got into BA. This sounds amazing! Can't wait for my first game!
Have been holding off diving in after hearing the rumours of 3ed. Sounds like it's been approached in a sensible manner and Alessio's rules-writing chops add a level of comfort. It may finally be time to dive in.
Hmmm... I'm still debating whether to switch to 3rd Edition. Maybe that'll motivate me to finally finish a Bolt Action army.
Looking forward to playing this, once the book comes out for the Desert Rats. Don't really know how to assemble my minis yet and will probably get my first list wrong.
Thank you for the video guys! Great to hear about the changes from the author himself.
Well, your intent of getting new players into the game certainly worked. I and 4 other friends have been meaning to get into Bolt Action for years and guess what? We all bought starter sets and other boxes. I am excited for this!
Thank you very much for giving us an opportunity to see the " creator " of Bolt Action V3 and get his take on the process. It's not very often this ossurs. I could go on for hours listing to Alessio talk on his methods and his creation process. We can hope that other writers or creators of games allow themselves to be interviewed and give us personal insight into them.
Started collecting right before V3 was announced, ready to finally play some games! Very excited for the new force selection system!
I feel that you should have done two interviews, this one and trolling one where alessio simply explains how much he hated everyone and his one mission in life was to destroy everything in gaming.... that way we could utilise it to wind up the Facebook doomgloomers around this version of the game
Great interview, always a pleasure to listen to such a nice guy, congrats for the new rulebook Alessio!
I wish they could release books to a certain anniversary and put on a great gaming day for it!
Very much looking forward to getting into then game.
Great interview. I appreciate the idea of smoothing out the game and making things a bit quicker. Super excited for this edition.
Commenting, for a chance to win 😊
But also, always good to see more about how new editions are developed and reasoning behind changes
So excited to get v3 onto the table. Really appreciate the good communications and community outreach during the rollout.
Great Stuff from one of the most famous Table Top Game Designers and one who truly understands what makes a great game!
It's always great to get insight into the design process of a game. For me personally, I always appreciate when games are streamlined, especially when, as mentioned in the video, doing so helps bring in new players to a game.
Had the rulebook a while due to work, but I'm happy with the editions changes. Fixed a lot of what became problems throughout the lifecycle of 2nd.
Thank you for this! Love bolt action and really hope I can win the battle of the bulge starter set! Best of luck everyone
Hardback book ordered and i’m starting a Hungarian army, new minitures woohoo 🎉
Good to hear the thoughts straight from the designer. It does look to be a more streamlined yet more historically aligned rulebook. Looking forward to my first game.
received the new edition book this past week and looking forward to getting started. Really like how the mechanics and activations work.
Some good insights into the new edition and able to play our armies right away
A box for another italian? ❤
(I'm trying my best NOT to win It.)
Upon first read it looks
Iike a rush job. I expect a v.4 in 3 years.
Thank you very much to Alessio for a brilliant game, it has brought me a lot of joy at a challenging time in my life.
I like most changes, kinda bummed about having to wait for so long for army books tho
Roll to hit, to wound, to save...same shit from 40years ago😂
I hope the changes help grow the game. I’m realizing that my son is about old enough to try games . This would be a great place to start
Very timely interview, been thinking about picking up this game with the new edition, it looks great!
There is nothing I like better than hearing from a designer! I usually read the designer's notes first when they're include in a ruleset.
Am very excited about this, once I scrape the money together to get started I'll be trying to persuade all my pals to get into it too!
Fab video with this and your how to play video I'm not so worried about the new rules now. :)
Cool, I’m really looking forward to this new addition and what comes after it!
Great video! I'm excited for the Armies Of... Books
Great improvements! Hope that tournaments will have the same hype of previous version!
It's pretty good when the designer talk about their game, and why he made that changes.
Alaska gen-X wargaming club, our only objection are the weapon ranges. we house rule that the ranges listed are the short range band.
were playing large games, on an 8x12 board for battle campaigns (bolt action apocalypse) weve had to increase ranges, and HE blasts are lethal radius,
weve added an additional inch for wound radius, and a further inch for knock down radius. also, weve retained the ability to form reinforced platoons.,
we now call those battle groups (kampf gruppe), because some of us are lazy, and some are ad hoc'ers. all in all, good fun
just remove ranges the only weapon at 1:56 scale that can't easily traverse a board is a pistol. Don't bother with bands.
Always interesting to hear a designer’s thoughts on the choices that went into bringing a game to publication
The man himself shows up. Bolt action er.3 looks really good to me.
I like the sound of these changes, especially to force construction
Enjoying the changes and having one of the actual writers giving the reasons as to why things changed!
Received my signed copy today and really enjoying reading through it.
So looking forward to this edition!
And thanks for the draw opportunity!
I would love to paint these figures but I cant‘t afford it.
Probably a good time to jump into this game with 3rd coming out.
Finally saw one of these in a game store today - fingers crossed I win one!! 🤞🏻
I am new to this game. I am really looking forward to this game!
🎉
Always a pleasure to listen to a sit-down with a game creator.
Great to get insights on the approach and an overview from the rules writer.
Got a big break in BA due to imbalance, hope the new edition fixes it
Great to here behind the scenes design decisions. Thank you.
Well, I have thought about getting into to Bolt Action, so there's that.
How can i create a Sdkfz 251/22 Pakwagen?
Excellent update info. Thank you.
Awesome to have the man himself walk us into the new edition ❤️
I'll comment just to try to win a box. I won't win, but wth
Was very curious to hear about what changes were rejected
I very much like the changes that make everything viable
Ok that looks cool! Ive never seen anything like that!
I've been on the fence, but I'll be buying the book now.
Your contents quality is just so good! Kudos guys
Might pull the trigger on this game finally!
Excited to start my bolt action experience!
Just got my copy today, can’t wait to check into
Just got my copy today, can’t wait to check into it
All looks great and good to see the design process
I'm convinced. Again. Fine I'll do it
great interview, cant wait to get some V3 games in
Can’t wait to get the first match in tomorrow.
Ready to begin playing 3rd edition!
Very excited for 3rd edition - I've been putting off buying in because I heard 3rd edition was coming out... just in time for my birthday! I've been collecting models in anticipation - can't wait!
Love this keep up the good work guys!
This video dropped the same day as the 3rd Edition FAQ, Errata and minor nation PDFs. Nothing obviously egregious that needed fixing but still the same old Warlord Games.
Sounds like a good version to me 🎲
Nice 👍 thanks for the video
When did Gerry get a makeover?
Alessio is always so passionate about his projects. From 40K, to Terminator to Bolt Action to Deus Vult, any of his rulesets I've played have been well thought out and fun to play. Nice to see him streamlining Bolt Action to help a new generation of gamers come on board and keep the hobby alive.
Im very Excited for V3
Bolt this comment down
Can't wait to play this
Thanks for the overview!
I would like to meet him someday
Don’t choose me !😂
More to add to my collection
