Discover the captivating history of the Horton Grand Hotel, a landmark that has witnessed the transformation of San Diego over the centuries. Built in 1887 by architects Comstock & Trotsche, the original Grand Horton Hotel played a significant role in the city's development during a period of rapid growth following the opening of San Diego's first transcontinental railroad connection in 1885.
The Horton Grand Hotel, situated in San Diego's historic Gaslamp District, serves as a captivating reminder of the city's expansion. The Gaslamp District is renowned for its unique method of lighting the city through arc lighting, a form of electric lighting that was revolutionary for its time.
However, beneath the elegant facade of the Horton Grand Hotel lies a history marked by intrigue and mystery. The hotel has become a hotbed of paranormal activity, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its haunted past.
One such chilling tale involves Roger Whitaker, a gambler who met a gruesome fate in Room #309. Known for his cheating and heavy drinking, Whitaker's reckless behavior led to a life-threatening situation. After a card game gone wrong, he was pursued by creditors, eventually meeting his demise while hiding in a wardrobe within his hotel room. Room #309 has since been a hot spot for unexplained occurrences, from bed-shaking to flickering lights, moving bathroom items, and violent swings of the wardrobe doors, all attributed to Roger Whitaker's restless spirit.
Another spectral presence within the Horton Grand is that of Ida Bailey, the former owner of a brothel on the hotel's site. Ida's friendly apparition has manifested as a white mist or a chilly breeze, creating an atmosphere of warmth rather than fear.
Witnesses have reported encounters with 19th-century figures dressed in period attire, seen floating down staircases, conversing, and residing in guest rooms. Phantom footsteps, self-opening and closing doors, and disembodied laughter have added to the hotel's mystique.

That's an awesome looking hotel! The first hallway looked like there was a person standing at the end of it until you guys got closer, then I could see it was a grandfather clock. I read your description about this hotel and room 309. Have you ever thought about staying in that room overnight to see if you could capture some evidence? You should make Luis go with you lol. I didn't want to be loud as Luis and I just walked into the hotel 😆. Also I didn't want to disturb the guest. But it was super quiet in the hallways but didn't really feel anything
