I understand Picasso's paintings. I know that he is a master at painting and has invented revolutionary ways of depicting things. The result is still looking objectivity ugly and infantile.
But I know why some people love it. It's like with a very high end and expensive meal. They're not always supposed to taste good, it's the experience of colliding tastes and the journey through the meal.

Mainly because they have perceived worth as unique investments to art collectors with large amounts of capital to spare. Yes some of them will probably be displayed/loaned to art galleries for decades while others may sit in vaults unviewed. But ultimately most will probably be resold for a profit at some point in the future.
      The key things are that:
      1. They are unique and have acquired some sort of fame/infamy within art circles either because of the artist or the particular work.
      2. In most cases the artwork cannot be reproduced and no more artworks will be produded by the artist as the artist is dead.
      3. There is some perceived demand, prestige, importance or value associated with acquiring the artwork.
In the case of the Salvator Mundi though it turns out it was a complete clusterf**k. The Saudis had accidentally sent two proxies to the auction (one by the king and one by the government) but the proxies did not know that and both were under strict instructions to win the auction at any cost to avoid it falling into the hands of a Qatari bidder. They ended up in a bidding war with each other when really the value of the painting was more like $80. In the end the Saudis offloaded the painting by swapping it for a superyacht worth $450million just to get rid of the embarrassment caused by the auction.
Same thing with things like Stradivarius violins selling for millions. Most are are beautiful and fine sounding instruments yet in purely functional terms they do not always beat violins made by Stradivarius' contemporaries or even modern instruments in double-blind sound tests. Yet because the Stradivarius name has become famous and there are only limited numbers of instruments made by him that rarely come up for sale and the fact that there will never be any more Stradivarius violins made (plus a few other factors like some of his instruments being associated with famous players) they can command super high prices at auctions. Sometimes they do go for under the estimates and there do need to be interested buyers though to get a bidding war going so it does depend on how well the auction house is able to attract the attention of interested parties before the auction.
