  • On July 30, 2021, Fisherman's Headquarters in Ship Bottom, NJ posted an image on their Facebook page of a young spearfishermen with a 45-pound tarpon draped across his legs. The social media backlash was swift, with many questioning the actual regulations on tarpon in New Jersey and the reasoning for harvesting a gamefish prized as a "catch and release" species in the Southeast. Rather than joining the "judge and jury", The Fisherman's Jim Hutchinson, Jr. tracked down 20-year-old Jake Kline to ask some of the very questions that the Facebook world had immediately after this rare New Jersey tarpon catch (this segment first appeared in the August 5, 2021 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.)
In this exclusive interview presented by The Fisherman Magazine, spend a few minutes with the young fisherman who broke the internet by bringing a 45-pound tarpon to the scales, and then ultimately to the smoker.

As long as it's legal, fire away. I think this is just a prophecy of what's to come as the gulf stream warms and more tropical fish make their way north.
That spearo is an absolute legend and ate what he caught.

Well him admitting that it didn't taste that great will hopefully keep people from harvesting them. With that said I have no issue with the dude. He is allowed to do it. I wouldn't have but that is me.

He obviously knew it was a tarpon and knew they have little to no food value. No reason to harvest it with a spear in my opinion.

If one gets caught and killed every 40 years who cares …I agree with the kid once in a lifetime opportunity it’s easy for people to say he was In the wrong cause they weren’t in the position to catch one and never will be

I really do not care that he did it but it's not a good tasting fish so I really wouldn't be interested in doing this. I don't really care for spearfishing anyway. Killing a fish so people believe him is kind of stupid but at least he ate it I guess.

    Great opening, book subject!!
but this clip it’s back because it “broke the internet”
    Nothing new here
Looks like a Money cow clip bait ….Congrats to both “The fisherman,” I see it as a desperate move to keep the momentum…
You know the sport needs better, one week the great efforts in satellite tagging SB and the next week a NJ estate trophy kill tarpon, help me here please, im confused on what’s your XXI standards for the sustainability of everything linked for the good to the sport and keeping it healthy for the future generations of fisherman .
    “The fisherman “
    I’m disappointed 😔
Wish you the best , but I’m out 👎

We isolated this interview and shared it separately because not everyone watches the NJ/DE Bay edition weekly forecast; and the story of this tarpon has extended well beyond the NJ border in the past week. Sorry to hear you're "disappointed" SurfSkagitNEcoast, but it's news we're sharing. And while I (we) understand your perspective from your comments at the other video, it's still news. -JH
