  • Square to Triangle: Craft a Stunning Pattern in Illustrator
Learn to make a pattern based on triangles that together make a series of squares. Learn a technique for splitting a square into triangles and how to offset the apex of the triangles with pinpoint accuracy. Then see how to color and recolor the shapes in multiple ways and then how to create a pattern from a series of starting squares. I will also show you a method for adding lines inside the shapes to create a pattern with some additional dimension and how to color your patterns using the new Generative Recolor tool in Illustrator. This video is suitable for all levels of Illustrator users.

You know what, this really isn't my expertise, but I think it is a great question. I really love Canva's video training content. You can find one example here: ruclips.net/video/UmHMVU6dceA/видео.html
Now Canva isn't Illustrator so that's actually a bonus because you can focus on what they are teaching by way of design and temporarily forget Illustrator and how to do things. They have a lot of content and it would be my starting point.

I absolutely love your videos! By any chance are you a quilter? While watching this video I was matching templates in my mind to recreate this in fabric. I will apply what you taught here in quite a few projects. Thank you.

I am so glad you enjoyed this video. I am not a quilter per se but I am a crafter and I watch a lot of videos and have way too many Pinterest boards and I love using traditional quilting designs as inspiration for new Illustrator designs.

When I finished creating the pattern and clicked on Pattern, Make, the pattern filled the artboard correctly, but the rest of the pattern was lighter than the center one.

I figured it out. In the pattern options, it was set to dim copies to 70%. Thank you for your clear instructions!

Awesome to hear. You are right, that's what was happening. That setting is only affecting what you see on the screen while making your pattern but it has no effect at all on the pattern itself.
