For all the similarities, these are two very different games for me with different levels of complexity. I had to play a few games of Altiplano before it really opened up to me and became a much deeper game with a variety of strategies to prepare for the win. Cannot wait until BGG gets the deluxe bits for Altiplano
Always love good "vs" videos. I own everything Orleans, and after watching your video, I know I'd also love Altiplano, but I'm sticking with the big O. Keep em coming! LotR: Journeys in Middle Earth vs MoM 2nd edition. Firefly vs Outer Rim. Mombasa vs Blackout: Hong Kong. :-D
I like some of the ideas in Altiplano, but in the end it's just more fiddly, with an even more abstract theme compared with Orleans. The winner is clear to me and its the older sibling in this case - But I'll certainly be interested if a third game appears from the same company/designer. Edit: Just thought I might add - Altiplano left my collection, but I would actually blame deck builders rather than Orlean for its cull - It feels a lot more like a regular deck builder to me, which isn't a good thing because deck builders are so much faster for the same depth ^^.
I find the two games to be completely different. The similarity is they both use bags to draw tokens out. Even _that_ is different - Orleans uses "bag building" and Altiplano uses "deck building". The "don't refill until empty" concept is what makes this deck building. As far as the enjoyment, Orleans all day long. I very much disliked Altiplano - it's way too fiddly and way too long. I simply don't understand the praise.
Honestly, I think both are superficial and boring. Orleans just ends up being who can get their reputation to the final tick with a little bit of shuffling around on the map. And Altiplano is just a hodgepodge of mechanics thrown together with little thought, imo. If you want a good engine builder, there are so many others that can satisfy that itch at the same price or lower.
@@ВиталийАбрамов-е9г In no specific order: Viticulture, Manhattan Project: Energy Empire, Fleet, Concordia, Clans of Caladonia, and La Havre to name a few. Hope I helped! Oh and if you don't already own Viticulture try to snag a copy since the publisher might be going under relatively soon. :(
@@jonlocke7112 - I never could bring myself to enjoy energy empire - I usually like point salads but that game rains so many points upon you that I had no clue what was worth doing :/. Rest you mention are solid though, which makes me want to try Fleet sometime now ^^.
@@ChrisSmithSmooth I actually just got Fleet during a drunken purchase (thought I was getting the new dice version) and was pleasantly surprised at how deep it was for just a card game. I would definitely highly suggest it since it's dropped considerably in price.

I know this video is a few years old but maybe I'll get an answer, what about a two player game? Preferences?
I have Altiplano, and my wife and I love it. I've not really felt the need to own Orleans as well.
Great video! Thanks for showing us the versus on these.
I thought it was fairly established that Orleans with expansions beats Antiplano, no expansions go with Antiplano.
Make sure to stay for the post credit scene with our guest ⭐️ ;)
The Latest Retro Board Game Show The Passion! 🤣
Should take a look at Hyperborea. It has been discounted at Amazon for a bit and I recently picked it up. Still waiting to get it to the table.

Dan Cheston Lott vs. MoM will definitely happen
What about in a "always two player game"? Which one do you think is better?

By the way, I always like your reviews. I find them intelligent, insightful, and fun.
It is an easy call for me... You have to own both with all expansions! In deluxe version preferably...
DTM that’s the real answer lol!

I also prefer Orleans.
