    We live in an age where being a fan of almost anything these days comes with a built-in high level of disappointment. It's so crazy. From movies, to shows, to video games, we as fans no longer get the joy of "looking forward to" something. It makes me cherish even more the memories I have from the 80s and 90s. Kids today have no idea what they missed out on...which might be a good thing?

      Lucas made his movies. We need to be happy with that.
      Or you can buy tabletop games "Rebellion" and "The Clone Wars" which are really good.
      With Rebellion you may think $100 for a base box is expensive, but it has 153 miniatures. I recommend to buy the expansion of Rebellion "rise of the empire" because it makes the game better.

      Again licensing is a separate deal. You get the license deal in place first and then you start to develop products with it. The licensing is something that must be renewed yearly or every other year, etc. Whereas the product you develop can take several years to create. They're NOT dumb to bake licensing into each individual product. The overheard in financing alone with that would be outrageous!

      I have to say that Disney doing this the way they did burned whatever bridges they may have built with developers. This could have been done differently so that they still could have opened their own game division and honored the existing contracts to garner good will. I’m sure this will be chalked up as a money saving move to fix share prices, short term, but it’s likely to damage the brands by either relationships with developers, cost of software or both.
      Honestly games have gotten so expensive I generally don’t buy them unless they are sub 20 bucks. But I also don’t have the time to play games like I did when I was younger.

    I recall the EA CEO, Andrew Wilson (I think), was not a big fan of the Star Wars exclusivity license. He wanted to do what they're now doing; focusing more on their own IPs.
    interesting how SWTOR has navigated the turmoil so far. That said, it's future comes across as hazy despite statements from Broadsword. Current expansion, Legacy of The Sith, is 2 yrs deep without much story progression, which is worrying to those of us who still play. Broadsword insist that development is still on going, despite a much smaller team, and more content is on the way. I take them at their word...for now. SWTOR is one of the few entertainment mediums that feels Star Wars, in my opinion.

    • @funchfries
      @funchfries 7 месяцев назад +1

      SWTOR sits in an unusual place, as it's grandfathered into the pre-Disney agreement. It's the only Star Wars game that EA has essentially complete control over - having said that, they probably don't want to piss off the largest entertainment brand in the world, so they're hesitant to put any investment into it.
      Bioware also got caught using funds from TOR to help keep their brand afloat - which is part of the reason why expansions/updates were extremely slow on TOR. (Evidently their big bombs have them on the chopping block, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get shuttered if Dragon Age 4 doesn't do well).
      All this to say: I was a bit worried about the move to Broadsword, since Broadsword has only ever really managed dying MMOs. But, with most of the TOR dev team having left Bioware, and gone to Broadsword, I think we might actually get MORE content within the next few years than we've seen since KOTFE/KOTET. I think EA has just been struggling with what to do with SWTOR, since they still make money on it, with doing very little. However, if they continue to do nothing it will be dead
      Semi-related: I also think that SWTOR is the only product that still feels "Star Warsy". Hopefully you're a bit encouraged by this news.

    • @SeLeXeL
      @SeLeXeL 7 месяцев назад

      @@funchfries Like most these days, I am cautiously optimistic. I do believe the SWTOR devs, now at Broadsword, want to push out more content, and have at least a 5 yr plan to do so.
      However, this assumes Lucasarts/Disney are fine with the narrative presence of the game and are happy for Broadsword to lead.
      I can see this game ending up as a standard bearer for the entire franchise provided they (Lucasarts/Disney) have the sense to not interfere with further development of this game.
      As for Bioware; my attention has increasingly been focused on the activities of their former devs, namely James Ohlen and his company, Archetype Entertainment. Their forthcoming game, Exodus, has me very intrigued. Given who else is involved with its development, it stirs the same feelings as Mass Effect 1 and 2. :D
