Raul was a better player throughout his career than Owen but Owen 100% deserved to be named European player of the year in 2001. Without his goals Liverpool wouldnt have qualified for the UCL, and Owens 2 late goals meant that he basically won the 2001 FA Cup on his own. Add to that his performances for England that year and you'll see that Owen deserved that award more than any other player.
