    People have this idea that pros quit playing professionally in their early 20's because they age out of their peak ability, but it seems like most pros I've seen talk about it say its actually just burn out. Imagine playing a single game 10+ hours a day, with the same people on your team and the same couple of teams of enemies. All day, every day, for years and years and years. That's the perfect mixture for burnout right there, and if you could change and be a variety streamer, making more money and having fun while doing it, its a no brainer imo.

      Not pro, but I played Mordhau on a competitive tournament level and can confirm that it's such a burn. I still play the game every day but the requirement to play and pressure to stay ahead of the curve was draining to say the least. Cant imagine playing at pro level in a game like CS.

    • @Dizzeke
      @Dizzeke 4 года назад +34

      true. as someone who almost went pro in rocket league, i burned out because of mental illness rather than peaking. in fact i was on the come up and my depression and anxiety and OCD got the better of me and I haven't opened the game in half a year.

    • @stints2749
      @stints2749 4 года назад +6

      Hmmm but why do professional sport players keep playing their game for 10 to 15 years? Is it better than playing a game with constant updates or play a sport with stagnant rules? Something about esports make pros not last as long as sport pros

    • @zladdykalash2125
      @zladdykalash2125 4 года назад +38

      @@stints2749 Its a lot easier to quit a pro esport than it is to quit pro sports. Way more pressure and way more publicity on those guys. Also they're under contracts worth millions. Could tie into why a lot of domestic abuse cases pop up surrounded professional sports players.

    Genetics does definitely play some role; reaction times, hand-eye co-ordination and mindset are all affected by genetics to differing degrees. That said, without training, you'll get nowhere. Same as any sport. And you can obviously train reaction times, hand-eye co-ordination and so on but the best of the best will often be that much further ahead due to their genetic advantage compared to say others that put in the same time, same training but are just a little worse. Mindset though is the biggest one which CAN be genetics but is often just as much developed through nurture. If you don't have the mindset to take failure as a process and you let it get to you too often or you don't have that natural aggressiveness I guess, to really go for what you want, that drive to succeed, then you won't make it. That's the biggest factor for pretty much anything in life. Some people though are born with differing wiring that doesn't naturally tend to them being that way and others are brought up in a way that they don't have that drive or focus. Changing it, even if possible, is incredibly difficult once you've become a full grown adult. Usually there's a core of ourselves that just doesn't change no matter what and if you don't have that urge to be the best naturally inside you, I don't believe you can 100% change that. That said, there is still a LOT you can do and you can still become an incredible player or sportsmen, musician, whatever it is. You just might not become the VERY best.

    People don't realize that when you go pro it's no longer just a game, it's a job and a lifestyle. The amount of sheer will and dedication you need for that is immense, people who don't take that seriously will burnout quicker than a flame on water. People are in love with the idea of a pro, not what it means to actually be one. Playing the same game for 8+ hours a day with the same people is torture for people who wants to be a pro to "play" the game they love, or to have "fun". That is the hard truth when things like pro gaming becomes mainstream. If you're a NFL player, you just don't practice football, you practice workouts, lifting, diets, etc. In Esports you practice teamwork, mechanics, and macros. And for the average person who is good at a game but doesn't have the mentality that fits a pro lifestyle, it's hard even if you like the game. The thing you have to ask for yourself for almost anything career related is, Do you only like the idea of doing it? Or do you actually love and want to do it? That is not an easy task to do, part of life.

    I think being rich doesn't directly make a person smart, and there's not a distinct correlation between brilliance and financial wealth, but there's more freedom and less stress when you're financially stable and for some that is enough to simulate mental health that creates an environment/opportunity of gaining knowledge.
    In other words it's easier to read up on philosophy, learn about math and science, and dive deeper into what interests you the most when your mind isn't focused on how you gonna pay your rent and car payment and still have enough to eat until next paycheck. When you're living paycheck to paycheck and one mishap like a vehicle needing maintenance work would take you months to a few years to recover from... the whole time you have to think about how you gonna make it to work on time, plan chores around another person's schedule who is willing to help you (driving you around as you try to be as little if an inconvenience as possible).
    Stress is the biggest inhibitor of knowledge and simply thinking clearly.

    Actually, genetics are a significant factor in gaming as in anything else, it's just that the clear cuts aren't there yet.
    F.e. your eyesight is crucial to your performance in any competitive game from CS:GO to Rocket League and what not, bcs it determines how well you can coordinate your input regardless whether you're using Mouse/Keyboard, Controller or Wheel/Stick.
    If you have poor eyesight you're fucked.
    Well, unless you're playing something like Chess or similarly turn based game where vision isn't a crucial aspect, but for FPS games talking from experience your overall performance is really tightly bound to how good your eyesight is, even if you can aim pretty well, if you can't see clear enough it does not matter.
    Anyone who has moderate to high myopia can verify this with great ease, just play a few rounds without glasses/contacts at a distance outside the minimum necessary focus and a few rounds with glasses on - the difference is often staggering.
    You will struggle to hit anything.
    You take much longer to aim (from few extra hundred ms to 1 sec +), you aren't as precise either, bcs your brain isn't getting the required visual info feedback to calculate your aim.
    If you have some condition that affects your Binocular vision you are also fucked.
    You can aim with 1 eye, but it's still far from idea to put it lightly. Not having stereoscopic vision (or more precisely - lacking Stereopsis can quite detrimentally affect your spatial coordination and hence your aim.
    That's Vision alone which is only 1 aspect of the equation.
    Not even mentioning the tech side like your PC and Monitor, which even if you are perfectly healthy you'll suck balls if you don't have the necessary equipment and vice versa.

    Shroud what you said about professional sports in comparison to esports as far as talent pool is correct. In most sports there are maybe 2-3 people at the top or on your team that are just so good that not even other pros can touch them (example: Roger Federer at Wimbledon, his win streak is insane). It goes down in tiers like you said idk if anyone here plays fantasy football but that's a good example of skill tiers as well.

    To whom it may interest, I've been reflecting on the scientific aproach to gaming skill and learning recently. And obviosly, as well said by shroud, since the gaming industry is brand new, we dont have basicaly any research in the matter. We are slowly diving into it (very very slowly). But i have some information i can share with you having a certain level of confidence. So here it goes:
    - Traditional sports and eletronic sports share some similarities, but are essentially diferent, since e-sports rely on the same cognitive skill learning and development system as tradicional sports and education processes in general, but traditional sports are based heavly on the physical component of task performing skills, wich changes the hole process of teaching, training and performing.
    - Some cognitive processes involved in manual tasks, skill aquisition, declarative knowledge, processual knowledge and the decision making process are well fundamented research objects in sports sciences, and may probably translate to e-sports. We not yet felt the need to do that, but as the industry grows, is likelly that feeling will be awaken very very soon.
    - The reaction speed (wich is the speed that the brain can identify and process a signal) and the action speed (wich is the speed that the brain can send a motor response to you're muscles to start moving you body, or fingers in this case, after that signal was processed) have a very very small room for improvement, because its heavly genetic determined. What we can do is associate a motor response to each signal, and then work on that response. But we're still learnig about how does it work on tasks like playing games.
    - Can a person be trained to get to a shroud level of gameplay? Well, we can speculate, but we're ways away of knowing anything about it actually. Everything we know about motor skills training and development is based on the physical demands of each task, and we don't know how much of an influence the physical component has on sitting in a extreamely confortable chair and moving only your neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers very lightly around. So, from a extremely simplified point of view, we need to understand what are de key factors on gaming performance, and then find out how they work, if and how they can adapt and what are the factors that can cause those adaptations, then we can try to come up with a tyheory about the learning processes involved and then develop teaching metods, and this can take a few decades, because its no easy at all.
    - I personally think that your level of skill is determined by a wide range of factors, but one that's really important is your gaming background. I'm 25 and i've been playing videogames since my early 10's, but i had no clue of what i was doing, and just a few months ago i had my first gaming pc, so i'm actually gaming just for a couple years now, and i suck ass, like hard, on pvp. And i think that the amount of time you grind in front of the screen, plays a major role on your performance, specially if you begin at a early age. That tells me that gaming can be learned, or at least improved, wich means it can be teached or trained. But i have absolutelly no clue of how it can be done. (personal opinion disclaimer)
    That's some of the interesting things i've been dwelling on about this topic. I have hours and hours of discussion ready if anyone can be interested in, if you have any opinions or questions on that matter, leave a coment. And thanks for reading this haha.

    One of the people who truly sjine on video games is a Japanese player by the name of: NeoNinja
    His RUclips channel is the same name as well, it's sad because he hasn't uploaded for a while, but he has natural talent

    There is physiology behind being a top gamer. It isn't all just training. Reaction time/nervous system, brain synapses, natural alertness, visual acuity, fast twitch muscles, motor control, spatial awareness, strategic thinking skills. Not everyone has all of these things at a high level. Having these things all at a high level is called "talent". noun: a special natural ability or aptitude.

      Yeah people like to meme "muh economy muh economy" but they don't realize the economy is the thing putting food on their table. More people will die from lack of food care etc than from the virus if they don't open it up. There is basically no chance to contain it till a vaccine is made (12-18 months) and we will have to reach herd immunity.

    go pro ? WHY would he ever do that? he loves streaming, makes a hell of a living off of it, is his own boss.... and you wanna throw all of that away to give up control , stick to a set schedule, have a boss, added pressure of having to be at top level play all the time... etc... etc etc... no sir. there is no way that deal would ever work. Stay home, earn your living, put money aside for 'after' and live the good life man. Perfection.

      I don't understand the "pro" thing. No one watches him because he is bad or he sucks, is not pro just because is not on a sponsored team? Because he is not on tournaments? The guy already plays like a pro, many follow his content because how good he is, he IS a pro player already, that's what many people are trying to get.

    When it comes to that "being rich" thing, for me being rich is having a lot of not really money, but having things, items, people and property so you do not need anything more.

    the physical thing u need to outshine people in video games is the same physical ability musicians have. specifically piano players and guitar players because of their ability hit the keys/strings u need to hit, fast, and at the right moment, and doing something completely different on each hand. it aint easy. i think its called dexterity.
