Just now discovering this band for the first time here lately through some close friends. As a musician I can say these guys are on a whole other level. How they aren't the biggest rock band in the world is beyond me.
I know this comment is two years old. But I actually had the pleasure of seeing these guys live back in 2014 at Bonnaroo, I had chills so strong I had to feel if my baseball cap was still on my head. I hope that helps. These guys are phenomenal musicians and I think they are highly underrated…
@@scruggsrox I completely agree, but also, I think it's part of their thing. Even the band name, Umphreys McGee, sounds like the unassuming bloke who lives down the street and keeps to himself. I'm sure if their team spent more time pushing their music to the radio stations versus focusing on their live performance, they would be really successful. But, holy crap those live performances are magic in a bottle. Idk, I'm a huge fan, and I tell everyone that will listen these guys actually put on the best show, made even more impressive by the fact it changes every night. If you go to summer camp, you can see these guys play 9 hours over 4 days and never play the same song twice.
They're not bigger because so many people have a hard time with extended jams. But man, I thank God for them. And the fact that I can still go see them in small venues is awesome.
Because so many young people these days think 4 mins of repetitive chunk-a-chunk with some crass rap lines over it is musical creativity. Just the bass passage by itself in this song is musical overload by comparison.
This bass line changed my trajectory as a musician when I first heard it. I used to think you had to play in scales no one has ever played in or come up with unique chords to stand out. Nope. You can play a 4 bar pentatonic riff for 4 minutes on loop and still keep people engaged if you really know what you’re doing.
53 years old and cleaning bathrooms again tonight. But with this bumping in my ears the bastards will never get me down. Hey, college kids...these toilets don't flush themselves!
Similar Skin is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Not one song on this album could ever be considered a space filler. I hear influences from a life time of listening rock music in every song, while making each one uniquely theirs. Besides being great musicians they also are great songwriters. So turn it on! Turn it up! Let the whole album rock you!
Seriously a band to be reckoned with! Love it! At 55 and a former late 70's frontman, I'll call it timeless! These cats are having fun, and that makes the best music! For sure!! Thanks UM
Been going to Umphreys concerts since before I was born, grew up having my family announce me as Brendan, so I could come out and perform on my living room fireplace
just saw Umphrey's McGee for my first time last weekend....absolutely love the music these guys make and the energy at their concerts! Can't wait to see them again!
Why didn't I discover this song 8 years ago? I have a friend who has loved this band for years. I guess I never listened to enough of their music. This is one of my new favorites!
similar skin is the album of the year so far. brilliant compositions. amazing harmonies. heavy instrumental. creative as nature. like the beatles and chick corea. i wish they'd play these songs on their current tour. the heaviness of "puppet string" in particular would blow everyone away!
@ manu moka - I am seeing them Friday night in Madison, WI - I couldn't agree more - support the new album and PLAY this song. Heavy - thick - rock n roll UM style. Love this s%$&!
Unbelievable musicians. You all should be proud of yourselves. Love you all, if you make a trip to Toronto you bet I'll be there cheers keep doing great things
I think the criminal part is how few people have heard of them, but I think part of their persona is to be super unassuming, especially with their name and the fact their label is called "nothing too fancy music." Its 100% fancy.
It's not like there's a book for this, or something you could read Cause I’ve looked around And I tried to fill these holes with other roles that I never learned to play It seems like they always falter, but how the hell should I know? Cause it always seems to disappear so quickly you can’t see Could somebody tell me, where does the time go? I’ve got a bigger pile of questions than really I could ever need There’s no explaining these I’ve never heard a word about the way we’re all received At least that I believe in And I know traditions tell it, it's different, they spell it all it out to be There’s no need to confuse me Cause I know what I know And if everyone’s all subscribed, to fictions that can’t be right Then spinning, we all collide one big typo this puppet show I’d usually begin this conversation differently I know it's kinda one sided It’s so obvious the answer is a question I believe That nobody’s asking, but what the hell do I know? If everyone’s so unsure of What's really below or above us Then maybe we all buy in And make our own collective end These puppet strings don’t pull themselves You're thinking thoughts from someone else How much time do you think you have? Are you prepared for what comes next?
Came here for Ryan Stasik's bass line (which is just SICK), and then got caught by these lyrics. Man! I hear the questions and longing for definitive answers in these words. (And the more-than-a-little-cynicism.) I DO believe, and I think it's a well grounded belief, but at the same time, the longer I live, the more certain I am that there's PLENTY I don't know and can't be sure of. Thank you for putting these lyrics out there!
I think this could be considered one of the greatest rock songs of all-time, definitely one of the best rock songs of the 2000s. That bass line, DAYUM!
Similar Skin was one of the first vinyls I ever purchased @ the Morris 11/14/2021. Start to finish, it's an UMazing album. Love you guys so much, you have no idea how much yall have meant to me this past year. This song, Morning Song, and Hindsight are always gonna be in my Playlist for years to come. Pleaseee come back to South Bend soon... #574 \mm/
As a metal guy. From the first time I got their album in 2005. I've loved these dudes musical approach to the point it had influenced my drumming to less metal and more progressive
I'm really sorry about your partner. That's devastating. I hope that everything has been going as well as it can in your situation, and that you were able to find some peace in the end of her suffering. I dont want to be too awkward here, but if you're ever at any detroit shows, or summer camp, and need a friend to keep things light, let me know. Comminity is huge in this scene, and I'm positive that if I were in your shoes, the hardest thing to do would be getting back to concerts.
Jake is such a talented dude. I’ve been practicing the Bayliss ‘rock’ part for a month or so using a hammer on and a pull off tab I’ve come across on the internet but seeing this it seems Jake does the whole run with all picking. Yes, that was a run on sentence but I’m blown away so much to try punctuation
kris myers is a fucking animal singing while drumming is hard enough and alternating and double tasking while laying down the fattest beats i’ve ever heard makes him the GOAT
Just now discovering this band for the first time here lately through some close friends. As a musician I can say these guys are on a whole other level. How they aren't the biggest rock band in the world is beyond me.
They should be what deathklock is in metalocylpse. The good thing is, they're always touring.

one of the best bass lines of the 21st century thus far
one of the best GUITAR RIFFS of the 21st century
It’s pretty damn good
Sounds like something that Justin Chancellor from Tool would play if he was more into jazz fusion than metal.

Tenzing Sherpa Yeah that's why we're in college. We don't wanna be the guy unclogging the toilets.
Lol love it.
Hahaha i work in pizza hut honestly id rather be mopping peoples shit than working there at least you can listen to music
at least you don't live in Argentina... ;)
Great band i've just discovered. Something fresh to me.
Even if everyone had a college degree, someone has to do that shit. Unsubscribe from the post-secondary school propaganda

Been a long-time follower of UM, and you just can't beat the range and complexity of their songs....just a dynamic and well-put together group!
Umphrey's gets better every year - All Killer, No Filler
***** Loving the references to Sum 41. lol! I love the new album too!
Seriously a band to be reckoned with! Love it! At 55 and a former late 70's frontman, I'll call it timeless! These cats are having fun, and that makes the best music! For sure!! Thanks UM
Kawdy you should check out the album Ghosts by Big Wreck. It sounds like it would be right up your alley.
Rocked Similar skin several time while driving in the mountains of maine the past few days. Love it more every listen. See you all soon.
Never gets old!!! Love these guys!
Talented modern rock music? Hell yeah! ITS ABOUT TIME!
Been going to Umphreys concerts since before I was born, grew up having my family announce me as Brendan, so I could come out and perform on my living room fireplace
I came here because they are in Madison in concert and I had to get a feel for who they are. This did not disappoint. The Bass is amazing!

My favorite song of theirs...KILLED IT last night at Fox Oakland. UM♥

Why didn't I discover this song 8 years ago? I have a friend who has loved this band for years. I guess I never listened to enough of their music. This is one of my new favorites!
This band is fast becoming my favorite.

Criminally underrated.

Umpheyeys is maybe the only rock band writing meaningful lyrics. Today.
One of my favorites!
I LIKE THIS BAND FOREVER
As a metal guy. From the first time I got their album in 2005. I've loved these dudes musical approach to the point it had influenced my drumming to less metal and more progressive
Just lost my wife to Cancer. We had 25 great years together and this is her favorite song

The new album is excellent!
Absolutely amazing.

Album of the year.
That intro 0:00 - 1:13 is just amazing. Wish it was longer....hell, an extended version of the intro could be it's own amazing song.
Fucking great! No matter how many times I've heard it
Saw these guys while I was working at a music venue, fun show
iyyaaaaammmmmm listening
This song is so good!
Great band! Tight with a great sense of space and dynamics in their arrangements. Highly recommended.
So solid. Loved seeing you dudes at summer camp.
When I can play my bass like that, I know that I have mastered my instrument.
the trick to playing this song is at 5:03, your Sweater String has to lightly deaden your low E string
Such a sick baseline
Much bass line, such fun.
I had the cake
Sooo ready for Scamp this year 🤘🎶💫🌞⛺️
Love the bass drop
How can anyone give a thumbs down. Bass is so incredible on this track
Can’t wait for Chattanooga!
The bassist going "ba boo bee boo ba be booo" with his mouth is my favorite
Awesome sound (well produced on all levels)! My Best, ~PM

kris myers is a fucking animal singing while drumming is hard enough and alternating and double tasking while laying down the fattest beats i’ve ever heard makes him the GOAT
in 2003 they would play at my local venue which can only hold 200 people max. Long story short, support your local bands
Fucking awesome song, seriously. Amazing, every moment.
9 months later, can confirm this song is still fucking awesome and amazing, every moment of it
11 months later, song is still insanely good
7 years later, i can confirm this is still an incredible song
Towards the end there's a very Alice in Chains feel to it. Great song
I've listened to this for a while and just now heard the similarities lol but yeah it sounds identical just a different rhythm to it
Andy Stibal lives in Laytonville California
Carly Lynch’s first kid is with Adam lawler and they named it after Jeff Feltensteins dog kaya
Could I possibly ask for a Bass Tab for this song I would really like to play this
This is so sick.
2:46 Stasik would have a leopard print flat-brim hat.
Andy Stibal who took me to your show at the Fox Theater in Oakland has been trying to kill me for years that’s Rodney Feinholz of Peoria Illinois
