Yes, this not only makes since but is the best way to look at it. All of a sudden, the music makes since. And your brain is thinking about singing the notes, not what pattern should be. Pattern chasing without hearing the music is only confusing and takes away what we want to say with the instrument. Playing the notes we want to hear is the whole point. Freeing our brains to do that is why this works for me. Thanks Steve.

Coming back to the guitar after many years, and not really understanding modes/scales, your explanation is simple yet creates that epiphany. Thanks for demystifying such a complex subject. I've seen many of your youtube videos Steve, and it's very obvious that you place a strong emphasis on trying to get people to fully understand what you're teaching. You are a great educator Steve!
The word "mode" means application, and that is what you have just described, not the emphasis on the starting note or position on the fretboard but how the notes relate to the background chords. This is what I first understood modes to be when I started learning about them. Then I "got lost in the weeds" as you put it, thanks for pulling me out. Great video.
Sometimes i feel you are one of those people on earth, who knows to speak only what is important and the listener has to listen. Every Individual feels this is what i wanted to hear. Excellent Job Steve👏🏻

I am beginning to understand your explanation of 'modes'. I have been 'sitting down in the 'weeds' never mind lost in them. After your tutorial, I am now at eye-level, and hopefully, with more practise, I will be standing and then out of the weeds. You are right. I am sure we overthink and confuse ourselves trying to see what is not there. Steve, thank you...keep up the great work.
Hi. Thanks for commenting. Glad to know the lesson was helpful. Sometimes modes can be a bit confusing but all they really are is the same notes of a parent scale starting from different degrees/notes. People many times tend to over complicate things that are really much easier than what they seem. Feel free to ask any questions if you need to and I'll be happy to clarify. Thanks again for your comment!
This is the best explanation of anything in the history of the planet. Modes seemed more difficult to understand than the meaning of life but, thanks to your teaching style, I get it!! My guitar isn’t so scary anymore and it’s all because of you. Thanks for all your great lessons.
Steve you are a king!!!Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a way that simple old man can understand all ! I have a big wish to learn guitar, you are a great motivator. God bless you mate !
The way you put your explanations across on your videos are top notch. I’ve learned more theory in 4 months of lockdown watching your videos than I have in the last 20 years of fooling around with my acoustic. I’ve purchased an electric guitar and moved forward leaps and bounds both in knowledge and ability. Thanks so much.
This video and the previous one made so many connections for me, I had been improvising over a C Lydian backing track using E minor pentatonic and was trying to work out the relationship so that I could use it for other keys, this makes it very clear that C Lydian being the 4th mode of G major would also be the same as the relative minor of G which was of course E, hence it all worked so well, and as you explain here, it then becomes a simple atter of hearing the music and emphasising in the most musical manner the correct notes to fit the sound. Such an excellent video that trully unlocks the understanding of the modes in a way that allows us to be more comfortable with the modal universe.
I’ve learned all the mode shapes a while ago (looking like it was the hard way now 😩) this lesson is explained in a simple way to help unlock the best way of looking at modes, very well explained. I wish I’d learnt modes this way in the first place. 👏great lesson.
mind blown. thank you I've been playin for so long and this explanation is the best iv ever heard in my life. thank you for this. lessons. ive been goin crazy on memorizing modal shapes, making a mode in a major key I thought I made a new mode, but still its just the major mode. you explained it very clear. i don have to worry moving away just to make a mode. the mode is the backing chord emphasis not my notes because its just major notes.

You have made this incredibly clear. Modes are scales within scales, beginning on different notes of the primary scale. Emphasis on the root notes of each mode changes the sound of the scale. Thanks! I first heard Miles Davis talk about modes and I as totally lost.
You sir deserve massive respect for sharing what amazing knowledge you have, your lessons have helped me and pretty sure thousands of others around the world to expand our knowledge of not just playing guitar but understanding music from the core. Thank you
Thanks for explaining this. Thank you so much for continued content that is broken down and so easy to understand. You do the best teaching I’ve ever experienced!
Steve, you are such an unbelievable teacher, it is just incredible! If I would’ve had you teaching the math and science and other stuff in school I may have turned out to be a somebody… LOL! Love listening to you… Regards from New York!
Of course I understand this video is for the purpose of getting to know and use MODES. For this matter D Mixolydian is just the fifth chord in key of G Major and G Lydian is the fourth chord in the key of D Major. So that when we play G Major pentatonic is going to sound well when accentuating the D notes from it over D Mixolydian and D Major pentatonic is going to sound well over the G Lydian as long as we put the emphasis on the G notes from it✌🏼🙌🏼 😀 Thank you Steve🎸
Thank you for making guitaring much more understandable and more FUN! 30 years I've played and I wish I had taken the time to REALLY learn about what I was doing all this time.
Thanks Steve, you made modes make sense to me. Others make it all to confusing by ,to me, displaying their own musical understanding, you 'translate' your obvious expertise beautifully. Thank you.
Finally someone explained this clearly! Thanks much. I love theory that opens my eyes and improves my music without even playing yet. ...and that in leaps and bounds.
Spectacular lesson, so much packed in here yet in a way that can be grasped. I’ll be watching this video many time to really get it to sink in. Thanks Steve!

Rob Chapman, David Walliman, Klaus Levin, should all have a look at this. To my mind this is hands down the best explanation on modes I’ve seen. Thanks Steve

Yeah this helped Immensely. You stripping away all the limitations and simplifying it made a world of difference in understanding the concepts. Thanks Steve!
well Slayer guitar solos are inside the modal philosophy as well , just like any heavy metal band, anyways i think your modes video series are great for most guitar players to understand, and i congrat you for that because many videos will confuse 99% of the guitar players and many end up quitting just to study it anymore, your modes videos are actually excellent. cheers from Portugal
So just to test this theory or lesson....I pulled up a chord progression on youtube in B minor....which according to this lesson is D or D major. So instead of playing the minor pentatonic scale in B....I played the major scale in the D position and Wa fucking La.....OMG. Then I changed my root note fr on D to E then kept on going up. All I can say is WOW! I THEN SHIFTED FROM THE PENTATONIC SCALE IN B TO THE MAJOR SCALE IN D. This definitely opens up the dimensional spectrum for a player or at least me. I know Steve Stevens does this among others but how doI wish SOMEONE would have explained this to me so many years ago. Do not give up on modes ladies and gentleman.....it's so much fun to add them to chord progressions. Thank you Steve! I just need to memorize all the patterns for the major scale which will teach me the seven other modes automatically!

Still so much good stuff to learn. You helped me so much in understanding this. Modes always scared me, but as you said, they are easier than we think. I also was thinking to complicated about them for years. Thanks. The way you explain with such relaxed and inviting attitude made my day. I really like, how you sometimes jump in themes, allowing all these additional ideas to come to life. Thanks a lot and greetings from Germany. Stay healthy and happy.

I’m still in the weeds. I’ve been playing since I was 15, and I am 62! Having been raised a trumpet player, I understand notation like another language. To be honest I’m a lefty who plays right handed, and I have used that excuse to focus on technique, and very seriously the past 15 years. I’m going to learn theory this year 2022, and I am still getting an overview of who I understand it better with, if that makes sense. Thanks, I will keep watching.

Thanks so much Steve for making the fundamentals in this lesson so relatable you make playing guitar inspiring and keep us positive cheers from Australia
Holy crap... The saying is true... You can teach a old dog new tricks... I started playing in 1982,,, dont laugh youngsters.. You will get there too and I can still play the greats. Rhoads, VH, Young, satriani,, but mimicking someone and truly understanding is 2 different things.. I honestly had a ""ah-ha" moment. Ive been trying to understand modes for quite some time and sure enough,, Steve you are correct when you said people over complicate it... My God in heaven, turns out, Ive known modes for years, just didnt understand that I did... Thank you Steve for the best explanation I have ever heard...

Don't know how many videos I have watch and IV probably watch this video multiple times and have been off in the weeds but I think the light bulb just went on thanks Steve
Steve, Many, Many thanks for making this make sense....the chord descriptions are what did it....Keep it in "G" Major....Too bad you cannot patent this info, amazing job....Thank you sir......
Hi Steve...I've always played this stuff by ear, but you are so cool to explain it in a way that even I can understand...which is an accomplishment of the Nth degree!
This lesson has helped so much! I thought I had to learn a ton of different scales. You are the first one that explained that it is merely an emphasis. Now I have a totally new way of looking at it. I just need to buckle down more of knowing the fretboard at a glance instead of taking a second or two to find what note I'm looking for. You Rock Dude!!!
This was really very helpful. I'm just starting to learn how to play, and I have an intense need to learn the fundamentals of what I'm doing. Playing a chord without understanding what a chord is is very confusing to me. So I'm cranking down on scales and positions first and foremost. Then I'll go on to chord progressions and meandering, and only then will I go to modes. But all your videos on music theory and its practical applications have been invaluable to me, and you are largely responsible for getting me to finally learn music and pick up a guitar, something I've been avoiding for decades. Hopefully I'll be able to jam with my old man (he plays the banjo and sings in a choir) soon enough.
Brilliant! You are the only person that has explained this in layman's terms. Incredible. Well done
Thanks for the kind words, Jack! And thanks for watching! :-)

Steve. You are the best instructor ever. I bet you’re a very patient person. Thank you.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! After 5000 videos of modal this and modal that. NOW I GET IT! Thank you!
Steve you are a great teacher. You beak everything down simply, but fully informative. Thanks man. Keep up the good work.
This is the best explanation of modes that I've found anywhere. Thank you.
Sometimes i feel you are one of those people on earth, who knows to speak only what is important and the listener has to listen.

I’ve
learned more theory in 4 months of lockdown watching your videos than I have in the last 20 years of fooling around with my acoustic.
Perfect sense. Brilliant approach and style. Steve always hits the spot
I’ve learned all the mode shapes a while ago (looking like it was the hard way now 😩) this lesson is explained in a simple way to help unlock the best way of looking at modes, very well explained. I wish I’d learnt modes this way in the first place. 👏great lesson.
Fantastic. No one has explained modes better. Thank YOU
Corona Virus forgotten for a day!
Thanks a million Steve I finally grasp the concept , after years of trying to understand it through other Teachers .
Glad to hear it's making sense!
mind blown. thank you I've been playin for so long and this explanation is the best iv ever heard in my life. thank you for this. lessons. ive been goin crazy on memorizing modal shapes, making a mode in a major key I thought I made a new mode, but still its just the major mode. you explained it very clear. i don have to worry moving away just to make a mode. the mode is the backing chord emphasis not my notes because its just major notes.
Thanks for watching, Jayson! And thanks for sharing your experience, and for all the kind words. :-)

@@stinemusiclessons I'm about to purchase your Rock Licks! Looking forward to it!
You have made this incredibly clear. Modes are scales within scales, beginning on different notes of the primary scale. Emphasis on the root notes of each mode changes the sound of the scale. Thanks!
I first heard Miles Davis talk about modes and I as totally lost.
Thanks so much. Your explanation to the modes is simple and very easy to capture. You are one great teacher. Thank you again.
Hands down the best explanation on modes. So many people including me got way way confused. Great work 👏👏👏
dude you are such an amazing teacher!! holly heck you approached this so well
I have learned a lot from your videos. You're one of the better music theory teachers on RUclips, that I've found. Thanks.
You sir deserve massive respect for sharing what amazing knowledge you have, your lessons have helped me and pretty sure thousands of others around the world to expand our knowledge of not just playing guitar but understanding music from the core.
Thank you
Nicely done. You have taken a lot of confusion out of learning modes. Thank you!
Thanks for explaining this. Thank you so much for continued content that is broken down and so easy to understand. You do the best teaching I’ve ever experienced!
yea! makes sense. your approach is extremely helpful. ive been playing for over 20 yrs and your making everything make sense.
Steve, you are such an unbelievable teacher, it is just incredible! If I would’ve had you teaching the math and science and other stuff in school I may have turned out to be a somebody… LOL! Love listening to you… Regards from New York!
Thank you Steve..really got it. You make it easy without ommiting. You're the guy!
Thanks Steve. You are a great teacher. Start to understand modes!
Thank you for making guitaring much more understandable and more FUN! 30 years I've played and I wish I had taken the time to REALLY learn about what I was doing all this time.
Me too, lol. Never too late though
unbelievable Steve, I have heard so many explanations, and your is one of the clearest, the best!
Thanks Steve, you made modes make sense to me. Others make it all to confusing by ,to me, displaying their own musical understanding, you 'translate' your obvious expertise beautifully. Thank you.
Great video Steve! You make modes be as simple as they should be. Truly a great video.
Wow so simple when properly explained with simplicity!!
Thanks Steve it's making more sense watching both videos.
Awesome, Richard! Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching! :-)

I really loved those video lesson. I was trying so long to get my head around MODES and you have explained it in such a simple and quick-to-recall manner. Thanks a ton.
Freaking Awesome lesson! Someone finally explained it so it can be easily understood! Thank you, Steve!!!!
Rob Chapman, David Walliman, Klaus Levin, should all have a look at this. To my mind this is hands down the best explanation on modes I’ve seen. Thanks Steve
David Walliman tends to make it sound complicated IMHO
Great explanation. Thanks for taking time to make this video and explain the easiest way for anyone to understand.
Thank you. Modes have all been so confusing. This helps.

Yeah this helped Immensely. You stripping away all the limitations and simplifying it made a world of difference in understanding the concepts. Thanks Steve!
This definitely helps me gain a broader perspective...modes are "feelings"...
well Slayer guitar solos are inside the modal philosophy as well , just like any heavy metal band, anyways i think your modes video series are great for most guitar players to understand, and i congrat you for that because many videos will confuse 99% of the guitar players and many end up quitting just to study it anymore, your modes videos are actually excellent. cheers from Portugal
Thanks for watching, Tim! And thanks for sharing your experience! :-)

🤯 maestro Steve once again you're blown my mind. Another aha moment. Thank you Steve
You are the first guy I've heard that is finally making sense to me. I've been confused for awhile.

Simplified, at last. Excellent descriptive using common sense concept helped me unlearn back to front traps. Thank you.
Thank you so much I finally get it. I have a good grasp of the concept. Thank you so much. You are a great teacher.
Thanks steve for the lesson..i can see how serious and passion during your teaching class..really appreciate it.

Thank u sir... Thanku u very much... I'm watching ur videos when I start playing guitar... I don't thing anybody can teaches modes as easy as u told.. 🙏🙏
I've got pretty consistent ADHD, and you, Steve, keep me focused like few other folks or things seem to be able to do. Ergo, I'm finally really learning this massive mess of data to the point of being able to actually apply it. I assumed you were from California or someplace like that, then you mentioned that you're from the Midwest, like me......Just helps me enjoy your lessons even more, which seems to help me learn even more. Thanx, again.

Thank you for sharing your hard work .... this morning I'm binge-watching your videos to basically get a refresher before going on to some more dificult srudies. You mentioned that modes was a difficult subject when you srudied so I figgure you are the best go-to for the study of modes ect. Outstanding teaching methods, thanks Steve, you ROCK !!!
UR #1 fan ~ Michael
Steve. Kudos on your superb teaching style. Demystifying a -typically- mysterious concept.

Thank you so much the light bulb finally clicked really appreciate the time you took to help us out absolute legend cheers
I was wondering whether I should learn a shape for every single mode and that answered my question. Thank you, Steve!
Thanks dude, I always learn something new from your lessons.
Don't know how many videos I have watch and IV probably watch this video multiple times and have been off in the weeds but I think the light bulb just went on thanks Steve
Very helping, thank you. Confirming what I previously leaned and giving me a practical application. I appreciate what you do.
Helpful*
What a great video, part 1 and this one. As a teacher and guitar player.. you nailed it. Subscribed
Steve, Many, Many thanks for making this make sense....the chord descriptions are what did it....Keep it in "G" Major....Too bad you cannot patent this info, amazing job....Thank you sir......
Thank you!!!! You are a great teacher!!!!!!!
Hi Steve...I've always played this stuff by ear, but you are so cool to explain it in a way that even I can understand...which is an accomplishment of the Nth degree!
Thanks for clarifying modes !!
Excellent lesson Steve very well explained, thank you.
Absolutely great explanation about modes 👏👏💪💪💪🎸🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
So well explained.
Many thanks, Steve.
Wow Whadda Eye Opener OMG !!!!!!! I was Always wondering why these guys played and I couldn't figure it out !!!!
In-EFFING-credible. Thx. Definitely interested in taking the masterclass
The fog is starting to lift from my modal confusion after watching this. Thanks Steve!
brilliant explanation!
