I think Mattel became the weaker competitor when they started to adopt ideas from the Bratz. Bratz dolls were not only about urban club outfits. Myscene seemed to struggle with creativity for a minute bc they were inspired by Bratz without understanding the full vision .They had a good thing going with their high Fashion Girl/NYC girl aesthetic . I personally love Myscene dolls and still do. They seem like a perfect medium between Barbie and Bratz dolls. I've always loved their stylized appearance and in depth persona's. Although Bratz has so much and range and was more inclusive.

    • @Adv18
      @Adv18 3 года назад +4

But who were Bratz inclusive to? They all shared the same face mold that perpetuated euro centric beauty standards. Even their POC dolls had the thin noses. large eyes, pouty lips and straight/wavy hair? The only difference between the dolls were the coloured plastic.

@@Adv18 I'm gonna speak from the perspective of a black person on this. Both lines have issues with diversity imo but in different aspects. Bratz has a known history of lightening darker skinned characters for commercials and the graphic designs on the boxes but Jade is routinely coded as asian and Sasha is undeniably black with deep skin, dark hair, and some of her dolls feature brown eyes and/or hairstyles like a fro or braids.
Madison on the other hand... I personally don't find her relatable in the regard. She looks like Yasmin but with wavier hair and blue eyes. She seems to be coded as black with her interests and personal style but that's as far as it goes. To me, especially as a got older, that always gave the impression of Mattel wanting a black character... but not *too* black. Combine that with Sutton who started off with a fro and then they chopped it off so he basically looks like a tan Ken with dark hair, then dropping Nolee to replace her with Delaney, and I just end up feeling like the representation in My Scene is incredibly lacking.
Bratz lacked the character development of My Scene but they have a wide spectrum of skin tones for kids to pull from with their huge cast of characters and 2 of their core 4 were racially *un*ambiguous. But that's just me!

    • @bgcrp2005
      @bgcrp2005 3 года назад +4

Sasha and Madison if they were real would benefit from futurism lkme the loose wavy curly hair and blue and green eyes and so what black girls should be able to feel included their dolls should be able to have long hair cause most girls in real life love long hair

I've found myself, as adult, realizing that a lot of these dolls were super cool and I've since started to gravitate towards them in ways that I was never able to enjoy as a kid, so... discovering your channel to learn about them has been a huge joy!

    Great video!
I'm definitely a MyScene boy at heart. When Bratz came out it was such an outstanding moment at the time because there were not fashion-forward dolls with such an innovative proposal as Bratz. We all loved the high-end fashions, very elaborated and glam makeup, trendy hairdos of that time that Barbie wasn't giving us.
When MyScene came out everyone thought the same: They were copying Bratz with the characteristics of a large head, big expressive eyes, glam makeup, large lips, large feet, and stylish cheekbones. The MyScene fashions were also high-end with an urban modern look that was very inn of its time and Barbie did a great job by giving us something very different from past decades.
I agree that in the beginning, the Bratz girls did not have a signature and singular fashion style to identify each character but through the years MGA noticed that and did it successfully.
The good points on the Bratz doll lineup it was the diversity of each character and the representation of different people, and the low point of it is that there were not developing the background stories of the girls.
On the other hand, MyScene did a great job by developing a deep back story for each character to make them feel more relatable to the kids through the tv ads, merchandising, and of course, the website. Although the graphics were very basic, the website was so much fun to spend hours playing there.
Nowadays Bratz did an impact on culture and they're still a world phenomenon and they remain relevant.

Growing up outside of the United States, the presence of a MyScene website with multiple attractions like games, webseries, written lore and trivia made a definite difference. Both Bratz and MyScene dolls were very expensive in my country, but the MyScene website had such chuckhold on me that I managed to get a Nolee as a gift one year. Bratz didn't have the same level of accessibility - I know they had their movies, but they were available only in a purchase form, it wasn't like I could just log on their website and have the videos there to watch whenever I wanted, like MyScene had.

One line that was a predecessor to both of these was Barbie Generation Girls (1998 - 2002 I think) - it featured a group of international, somewhat multi-ethnic characters with distinct personality + styles and had book tie ins. Set in New York too like My Scene, and trying to push more contemporary teen fashion like Bratz. There were only about 3 lines of dolls, but I feel like this was kind of a line that was pushing fashion dolls into the Bratz and MyScene era (I am pretty sure the Bratz creator worked for Mattel at this time too so highly possibly he worked on this line.). Maybe not as high quality fashions but really cool accessories. I have always loved distinct styles and hobbies between my doll characters so this kind of stuff is what I lived for. MGA still often fails in this department in my opinion - all the Rainbow High outfits are amazing quality but feel like one guy's idea of 'fashion' and I wish they pushed individualized characters more.

great video! I do have to disagree about Bratz not having characteristics & peronalities to the extent of the main 4 of course. the secondary characters were definitely more just dolls. straight from the first release we know that Yasmin is a bohemian earth girl, Cloe is the girl next door, Sasha is into music specifically hip hop & Jade is into making her own clothes. In the digital media those personalities are expanded of course making Yasmin a writer & animal activist, Cloe was sporty & studious, Sasha was into making music and Jade wanted to be a fashion designer and they all shared a passion 4 fashion. As a kid none of them really represented my ethnicity perfectly so i always identified with Sasha for her love for hip hop and music :) I do agree that both Bratz and My Scene ended up with dolls that looked similar and less personal however i think Bratz also did a good job with showing the girls personal styles in the earlier years like Slumber Party, First Edition & Xpress It!

Bratz will forever be my favorite.
I'm on my boyfriends account right now, but growing up with the name "Anissia", being constantly made fun of for my DSL's (yes...children in Texas know what DSLs are), and having the darkest skin in my all white school, it felt...idk...cool to see dolls with exaggerated versions of my already exaggerated natural features + with names just as -"weird"- *unique* as mine, being played with by Lilly white suburban girls who knew nothing about an aesthetic I had grown up with and learned to idolize as I attributed it to how my older imo-glamorous older cousins looked.
The big hoop earrings, the super slick ultra shiny lip-gloss, white eyeshadow, lip liner + no lipstick, belly shirts with cute AF bubbly graffiti letters/decor...like, that "zoom in zoom out" photo-background kinda vibe (if anyone remembers those places), high ponytails with random braids thrown in, "fendi capri pants & pedicured toes", etc.
White girls & people in the business industry may call it "urban", but I call it "our style".
Us: Latinas, chicanas, dominicans, black, phillipina. Whether "Cholas" or "around the way" girls. The ghetto superstars & barrio barbies ha😹
This was US. And it felt validating and special and made us feel cool and exotic but in the good way.
Our features and fashion, once made fun of, were now idolized and admired.
I will always LOVE Bratz for that.
The people saying they look sexualized, dirty, gaudy, tacky, etc. and that say how when they were younger "they didn't want one" (lies) and try to make it seem like the more "natural looking dolls" are somehow morally and culturally superior are sick and stupid.
Id rather look gaudy them boring.
And makeup/loud bold fashions are just a celebration of unashamed femininity, a symbol almost, like the ornaments on a Christmas tree. No one looks at a Christmas tree, all done up with fabulous lights and bells and says "its masking the trees true beauty. How shallow". No that would be ridiculous.
The ornaments are a celebration! An enhancement of our beauty! The way we express ourselves. There is nothing wrong with that.
And its not Bratz fault that they just did it in a way that the naysayers are unable to pull off.
So they can stick to their frumpery and their no makeup looks.
They can be the morally superior ones who find value in the empowerment of not showing their value through the male gaze and blah blah blah
But as for me and mine?
Well embrace the camp and look fab while doing it and not spend our time with weirdo thoughts in our heads about how and why a CHILDREN'S TOY is "sexualized" (like...ew?).
Bratz dolls don't look "cheap". They look _fun!_
and for us melinated sisters, they looked how our older cooler cousins were dressing at the time.
Besides, as one of our Patron Saints of Fabulousness once said:
_"Well Darling, it takes alot of money to look this cheap!"_ -Dolly Parton

I also think I was secretly attracted to them almost a decade before I would come out as gay, and there was a lot of internalized homophobia there. i feel like with bratz, they were… “the girls with a passion for fashion”, like that’s literally what they were. them not having consistent styles actually made sense because they dressed in clothes and not personality traits. it’s something barbie also started out as, many collectors of vintage barbie like to point out how her early looks can be seen as fashion time capsules that captured the fashion of that exact decade or even year. also, you could imagine the bratz girls as models that are just posing for the magazine, getting to new looks after the one they just shot.

I agree! I think especially with the framing of the girls running a fashion magazine on the side, a lot of the lines you could probably imagine as them modeling the looks they were going to feature in the magazine. I think both lines did a great job of being fashion time capsules in their era, but whereas My Scene was on the side of more casual fashions in their early years, you can see a lot more tangible inspiration in Bratz from specific runway pieces or popular high fashion items in that era.

@@DarlingDollz myscene’s idea of casual is very mattel-ified (very much monochromatic, not something you would pull out of the closet and throw on) and bratz on the other hand wore actual pieces that didn’t necessarily match bc… that’s how clothes work irl !! it’s rare when someone is wearing matchy matchy

Seriously tho, I was more into My Scene because even as a kid, story and character content was always more my thing, but this video has given me an appreciation for Bratz. I hope those rock star fashion designer genies keep showing off their Passion for Fashion and inspire kids out there to do the same 💕

I'm here from the Equestria Girls video and can't wait to comb through your channel a bit. And it's true tbh, as a kid I wanted Bratz so bad bc I loved fashion, but now I feel much more nostalgia for MyScene bc I spent hours connecting with the girls as characters and pretending I was in their group. My parents didn't want to indulge me in either brand lol so I still feel envy as an adult for these dolls looking at these old commercials. I can't believe how wild Bratz got even by today's standards

As someone who didn't like either brand initially, I could at the very least respect Bratz for being more different and edgy. I don't need media to determine my dolls' personalities. That's what imagination is for.

I'm very much settled in the Bratz camp since they're over cartoonized aesthetic and focus on fashion has always drawn me in. I also grew up watching the cartoon. I remember My Scene and while the aesthetic was certainly applause worthy, Sasha just felt like better representation for me as a black kid then Madison ever did.
That being said, to this day, I dip into combing through different My Scene dolls on Google or ebay because the earlier aesthetic really hits hard. They truly had the fashion of everyday put together young women and I struggle against my chains to buy Sutton and Madison from the Hanging Out line.
The impact of My Scene can't be denied though overall Bratz has gotten into my heart and my wallet. Lol

I never really watched either of them, but I always liked the Bratz dolls in the stores. I never had any as I didn't like to play with dolls as a kid, but as someone who sews, their outfits always looked so cool, like things I'd want to wear but wouldn't be allowed to. I still like that type of aesthetic of the 2000s slightly edgier girl they were going for.

I agree with everything you said. I love the fleshed out personalities of My Scene and how it translated to their fashion (at least until My Bling Bling onward) and the Bratz diversity. Though I did enjoy the My Scene movies and website more. I like low key, more plot driven stories. Both had amazing quality of fashion, but Bratz took more risks and had more variety, imaginative, and creative lines.
Personally, I enjoy My Scene more as dolls because they were the perfect blend of both Barbie and Bratz, but I enjoy Bratz more for their fashion lines. With Bratz slowly making a comeback I hope My Scene can also do the same. But y'know to avoid getting sued maybe make some bigger, stylized face sculpts of popular Barbie molds like Steffie, Mackie, etc. As you said there's room for everyone.

I always wanted a MyScene doll as I saw them as more mature, but none of my friends had them, and my mum even once convinced me that getting a Bratz doll in the store was better than trying something new with a MyScene doll. Please, I loved the bratz movies but in general I think the Myscene dolls were just better built. The core 4 Bratz characters still had their assigned style and fashion passion though.
For yasmin It was bohemian and vintage.
    Sasha was hip hop inspired.
    Jade was alternate fashion.
And Cloe is sporty but still extravagant.
You can see that in their earlier lines such as XPress it,Flaunt it,style it,strut it,funk out,and even the first edition.
They became inconsistent with their styles when they sued mattel in 2005 and started excluding Sasha and jade from the pack. They had to go under some major changes to stay on shelves from 2005-2009

Okay so they hate Bratz because of their features but My Scene was meant to compete with Bratz. They have Bratz inspired facial features, but obviously with Barbie bodies but why is one deemed worse than the other?
