Excellent topic, Mindy. One I am very passionate about and have years of research on. Please include in these videos the need for stored water and alternatives for heating the foods, as well as themselves for upcoming weather. I saw a comment that with the recipes inside each of the bags, they would be a wonderful "dish" to bring to someone grieving. ❤ ❤ that! Also, to deter mice: peppermint planted around your home, peppermint oil on cotton balls in interior rooms and an optional cat. And/or mouse proof everything. I did emergency meals in jars: dry mixed meals (many available online) and write instructions on a tag. Great to have. Caveat is to have bottled water and a way to heat them.
14:12 you can get cans of fruit and use the instant oatmeal and either have a good breakfast or a room temp crumble depending on how much juice you leave in the fruit
I love how you put the recipe in the bag. Not only would these be good for emergency but great for those you want to leave for someone grieving. No freezer space taken AND several month out they can have an easy meal.
Add to this list when a household (or at least the caregiver of the household is sick) or for a new mother. These would also make great gifts for a new college student or for someone living on their own for the first time.
We are in Asheville NC and just got power back after TWO WEEKS and I see this video. It’s funny how that works I’m definitely going to be bulking up and restocking my emergency bin!
Good to hear you're OK. Two weeks is a lot. After a week without power years ago, two things I keep on hand are a large candle warmed fondue pot (good for warming a can of soup, stew etc & saves gas) and cheap solar lights to use as night lights
I am praying for all of our fellow Americans who were in and still are suffering from the storms. Samaritans Purse will continue to receive donations from me and my husband. God bless you all. ❤😊
I make a version of that chicken noodle soup. I find using a can of cream of celery soup a good swap out for the table cream, it also is cost effective. Great video
We struggle with mice here as well. We've got a big field back behind our garage and they all come trotting into the house when we get deep into the fall. After 1 particularly bad winter when I had to clean out my entire pantry I started putting everything into those heavy duty hard plastic containers. Everything gets decanted into those containers. Anything that can't go into metal, glass, or the heavy duty plastic has to go either in the freezer or in a large container much like the one you use for your emergency meals. In fact I've got one of those on a shelf that has all the extra cake mixes, flour and sugar that didn't fit in the canister, stuff like that. I would absolutely make sure that that emergency meal tote has a tight fitting lid on it as well.
I like to thrift old metal "picnic baskets" or metal potato chip/ popcorn tins to store items that attract mice, like pasta, bags of soup mixes, cake mixes. Also food grade 5 gallon buckets with gasket sealed lids, for my bulk flours, bulk sugars, 2 quart canning jars and glass gallon jars on pantry shelves to store things like my chocolate chips, sugars, cocoa. cornmeal, corn starch, barlely ect.. Also, things like chocolate syrup, pancake syrup need to be watched/stored securely, as we had a chipmunk get in several years ago, and it punctured the syrup and drank it!
I buy a large can of chicken, a box of stove top stuffing, a bullion cube since you cant use butter. Cook stuffing then add the chicken. Serve with a vege. CHEAP and filling.
I have an emergency meal supply and I like to use cream of celery soup, minced dehydrated onions (in the spice section) and canned carrots for those casseroles and soups that require the CCO trio. I don’t typically use canned cream soups, but I do keep them in my emergency supply and I saw another prepper suggested cream of celery and loved the idea.
Thank you for the inspiration. I keep a large pantry so I think what I’ll do instead is create a recipe binder that utilizes items that almost always have on hand and doesn’t require me to open the fridge.
This is GENIUS! Writing from Greenville SC where we are recovering from Helene. I learned a lot through this storm and will be more prepared next time. Including things from this video!!❤
We do this just not for emergencies but for my bad day's and my husband can follow the instruction. I also keep aluminum pan's in the tub for easy cleanup. Square and round.
Been through many a hurricane here in FL and have a hurricane tote with food , camping stove , weather radio ,ponchos, can opener ,battery operated mini fans all the things but never thought of putting together 'meal kits ' great idea thank you
I am an ingredient canner. I have pasta vacuumed sealed in jars. Those spice packets, vacuum seal them in smaller jars. I think your ideas are great! I have my recipes too, I have them in a book. Your idea keeping the recipes with food is genius because my husband asked me, " What if something happens to you?". True, I know what ingredients go with what recipes, but he doesn't. You made me rethink some things.
I was stationed in England and lived in one of those old (1913) farm houses...and we had mice. Oh the stories I could tell. The best thing we did was put everything in a locking lidded container. Seemed excessive...but kept the critters out of our food. They then turned their attention to our dog's kibble which we found hoarded in a little used closet right before we moved back stateside. So maybe...a lid. And switch the dog's food to wet food. lol. Lessons learned. Love your channel!
One of my mom's go to recipes was her Cream of Spinach Soup, we discovered we could make it with three cans, a can of spinach, a can of gravy with sausage and a can of evaporated milk. All you really have to do is combine and heat it through.
Oh, that sounds good! Would you please share more details? Which brand of gravy and do you add any other seasonings? I want some cream of spinach soup right now lol
@@72cmg Libby's is the brand but Great Value has one too you can always season to taste but I do recommend dried minced onion or onion powder cause that's what my mom puts in the full version
Great timing for this video. I am in S. Florida and we just had Hurricane Milton hit Florida yesterday. Thankfully we did not get the main part of the storm but we had rain, wind and tornadoes. We always stock up before hand but this gives me exact recipes to use. Thanks
I live in southern New England and during the winter we get a lot of nor’easters so this is a great idea where folks get snow storms. Sometimes you can’t leave your house so you always have a meal on hand! And make sure you use bins with a top that latches closed. ❣️
I always stock up, and we have a storage area where we keep our “stash”. We also have ready-made food that can be eaten cold if necessary, like canned soups and canned meat. And more than one can opener
With our hectic schedules we just don't always use up our aromatics - carrots, celery, onion, bell peppers- before they go bad. It can be a bit pricey, but I now have stock (I did a slow build-up) of all of these types of items in a dehydrated form. I also try to keep frozen versions on hand and leave the fresh produce for produce I know we'll use up regularly.
Hi Mindy Thanks for this video it will really come in handy for so many of us because there is so much going on now days you never know what we need and who we can help😊❤️👍
Just make sure to store lots of water as most of these recipes require quite a bit plus you have to wash your dishes. It is also a good idea to have things that don’t require water or even heating. Ie cans of soup that can in a pinch be eaten cold out of can, prepared tuna pouches, crackers, peanut butter, canned fruit, protein bars etc in case your water situation becomes an issue which is likely over time. Just something to consider for a more true emergency situation. Your meals of course will be much nicef

Ok 1, 5:15 thank you for being so honest. I see alot of tubers prepping food this way but never really talk about the possibilities of mice and other rodents getting into the food so thank you ❤ 2nd, this is a perfect idea for the Storm victims thanks for sharing! ❤❤❤❤
Those tins of cookies are in mouseproof metal containers. Try using those to store the emergency meals. The tins are sometimes at thrift stores. Keep away from moisture as they will rust.
I've started buying powdered cream of mushroom, rather than buying cans. We have minimal pantry storage. In past summers, I've also been able to dry and powder tomato skins. It's a great paste/sauce substitute, and takes up less space than the cans. I'm still searching for a store bought option, but both would be great in an emergency bin, assuming you will have a heat source+ water!
Powders and dehydrated items are great if you can make room in the budget for them. I'm to the point of doing this, too It's been a game changer in preventing waste, convenience, and emergency stock
Yes. This is a different kind of emergency stock since food has to usually be a slow stock (both with money, and with an oncoming emergency like a storm, one may deal with empty shelves) but can be contained within a bin or designated space. Water on the other hand is a huge space invader, usually done with an expected prep such as an oncoming storm. That Lisa Dawn mentioned on her channel having foldable containers for this type of emergency prep where space is an issue. It gives you the ability to fill them last minute rather than store long term. She said she gets them on Amazon. I haven't ordered yet, but it's on my list of emergency prep being in hurricane territory myself. Obviously if the space is available some emergency water could be stored longer term. We always keep stocked in a couple of cases of water at all times.
I make a version of chicken tortilla soup that uses all canned items and tortilla strips. I've always kept enough shelf stable food that we could go two weeks or more if we had to. We did have about 10 days in 1996 with a blizzard where we couldn't leave our neighborhood. The only thing we ran out of was milk. I also keep dried celery and onion on hand along with all my other spices/herbs. I know someone who shops 2-3 times a week and only uses fresh food. I don't know what she'd do if she couldn't get to the store.
Dollar Tree shelf stable milk is pretty good. Since I found it I have not run out of milk! I buy fresh milk, but if I don't feel like going to the store, or it is an emergency, we are set!
I like to have no-cook meals on hand. Canned potatoes or white beans, canned veg like carrots, canned chicken mixed with a sauce to make a meal. Pesto or a small stir through pasta sauce or a jar of vegetables in sweet and sour sauce. If you have reliable water, rinse the veggies to reduce the salt.
For your storage bin, you might consider getting one of those bins that has locking latches. The Container Store has a weatertight tote of various sizes. They're a little pricey BUT are pretty hard to open and the plastic itself is pretty heavy duty.
Hey there! The algorithm must have brought me here because I recently moved into the Tulsa area from VA. Looks like tonight might get crazy here, and I'll see what this OK weather is all about! I'll definitely look into some of your tips and tricks for being prepped. I never knew about the table cream. I always have heavy cream going bad because I only needed it for one thing, so that really opens up a lot of ideas for me! Thanks!
If you want to keep the mice out of your bin, try using one with a lid. We back up to a large wooded area, and we always have to be careful in the fall.
I will always remember the video, and your facial expressions, when you discovered the cooked ground beef:). I do enjoy these prep videos. Frankly, I use them to always make sure I have pantry staples to make a dinner.
I really like the way you do emergency food prep with all ingredients put together in bags as opposed to random food storage where you may or may not have everything for a meal.
Not sure I understood you, thought you said you couldn’t use your refrigerator or freezer food when you lost power. If our power was out for a while I cooked the food in the refrigerator and refrigerator freezer. If it’s out longer then start on the food in the freezer. My deep freeze will stay frozen for several days (mine is always full and in an unheated area)
These look good and would be really handy to have around during storm season. I like to see how everyone makes the same recipes differently! My family makes taco soup with a can of chili beans with sauce, a can of undrained corn, a can of undrained diced tomatoes, a can of drained and rinsed black beans, a packet of taco seasoning, and ground beef. I have never seen that canned ground beef before, but now I will be sure to look for it and give it a try! Thanks for sharing this!
So jealous you have key stone ground beef available in your store ! No stores in my area carry it. I have searched all over ☹️ if I were you I would stock up !
I have a corner pantry. After reading some of the comment that went with this great idea, i am goi g to get a big cintainer with a lid and shove in the unused back corner for an emergency box. Thank you Mindy and all the comments and replies for this video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mindy thank you so much for your hard work and suggestions. You've given me so many ideas...although I have food allergies your recipes have help me to think outside the box and be more prepared. Tyfs😎👍🤗
We always have a problem with mice in the Fall. I remind my husband to set traps. We don't have any takers for a couple of weeks. Then it gets a little colder and all of a sudden for several weeks he's dealing with them. Then we have no problems once it's below freezing.
Oh my gosh! I just saw bioled peanuts on the shelf when you were looking for hominy. I love them, but I live in Oregon. We can't get them up north. I have to order them online. We have a fireplace insert on which we can cook if the power goes out.
Might be useful to write the use by date of the shortest dated foodstuff prominently on the outer bag. Then you could decide which to use first without much bother and wasting food.
Thanks for the reminder about table cream, I need to pick up a couple of cans to have on hand. Dollar Tree occasionally has pouches of cooked ground beef, I have a few in my pantry but haven't tried it yet.
that yellowstone brand is also a cologne brand..lol. hubby has it and it smells really good... the tortilla and corn chips from that brand at dollar tree are DELICIOUS ...
Simple and easy chicken noodle soup. Looks delicious. "Shelf Stable meals bin", a brilliant idea. I swear, rodents always find a way. Sadly,The mice know 'the eating is good' at Miss Mindy's house. Pass the word.
All you need to mouseproof your house is have one indoor cat. When I first moved in, I had mice problems until I got my indoor cat. That was 2007. I haven't seen a mouse since. Also, I found an affordable exterminator yearly plan. Sometimes it is better to bite the bullet and let the professionals handle it. Because I have a plan, if I see issues between my quarterly treatments, I can call and have them re-treat for free.
❤❤❤ Great minds! I've survived several blizzards and really BAD winter storms in my 60+ years living in Wisconsin. I just did this for the next season of "what if..." Many of friends laughed thru the years, but after 2020, I was being asked 'how do I get started?' 😢

Congratulations on 200k🎉🎉
I really like the way you do emergency food prep with all ingredients put together in bags as opposed to random food storage where you may or may not have everything for a meal.
The tuna tetrazzini has become one of our faves!
Great ideas for quick emergency meals 😊
This is helpful .i am going to make some.thanks mindy❤
My pleasure, glad I could help!
(Posting as Joyce) Thank you for these great ideas. My picky family would not probably eat any of them, unless they had no other choice!!
Great ideas!
Thank you for sharing, this is a great idea. ❤
Great ideas & videos! Thank you so much
Not sure I understood you, thought you said you couldn’t use your refrigerator or freezer food when you lost power.
Congrats on 200K 🎉
I have a corner pantry. After reading some of the comment that went with this great idea, i am goi g to get a big cintainer with a lid and shove in the unused back corner for an emergency box. Thank you Mindy and all the comments and replies for this video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mindy thank you so much for your hard work and suggestions. You've given me so many ideas...although I have food allergies your recipes have help me to think outside the box and be more prepared. Tyfs😎👍🤗
Congrats on 200k!
Thank you so much 😀
Such useful information.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I always find useful information in your videos.
this is so helpful, thank you!
I love how you bagged the meals. I should of done this for Milton. Next years hurricane kit will be bagged. It looks so much easier
Great great idea, thanks so much.
Dollar tree off 71st has the ground beef crumbles, also that neighborhood walmart typically has it in stock. ❤
200K Congratulations!
Oh! I didn’t know you were in Tulsa! I grew up there. My family is still in the area. ❤❤❤
We always have a problem with mice in the Fall. I remind my husband to set traps. We don't have any takers for a couple of weeks. Then it gets a little colder and all of a sudden for several weeks he's dealing with them. Then we have no problems once it's below freezing.
Same thing here. They usually come when the weather starts shifting to cooler.
Usually once we trap a few that does it. 🤷♀️
Thank you so much
I would try these without an emergency 😉
That's good. That will help when the need to rotate them out comes :)
Ye I do so easy❤
I never refrigerate my canned Parmesan Cheese. I suppose it would last longer in the fridge but it’s fine left out.
In my entire life (I'm 77) I have never stored parmesan canned cheese in the fridge. Neither did my mom.
Yay!! These are my favorite videos that you make!
Now that I live on the East Coast, I am newly inspired to come up with vegetarian versions. Thanks for the inspiration.
HEY! I've been looking into dehydrated carrots, celery, onion for soups. Maybe not a bad option...
Thanks for the reminder about table cream, I need to pick up a couple of cans to have on hand.
Dollar Tree occasionally has pouches of cooked ground beef, I have a few in my pantry but haven't tried it yet.
Great idea. But I would have to have a bin with a lid!
I got mice as well and they are such a pain to get rid of.
Good video
Mindy, do you put the closest use by date on the page that holds the recipe? so you know whent use it.
I Love your videos
that yellowstone brand is also a cologne brand..lol. hubby has it and it smells really good... the tortilla and corn chips from that brand at dollar tree are DELICIOUS ...
3 weeks min meals on hand is the current recommendation for emergency teams in the LA area.
❤❤❤ Great minds! I've survived several blizzards and really BAD winter storms in my 60+ years living in Wisconsin. I just did this for the next season of "what if..." Many of friends laughed thru the years, but after 2020, I was being asked 'how do I get started?' 😢
Thanks for the recipes and ideas. Do you have the recipe written for the chicken noodle soup? I didn’t see that one in the E-book.
Great ideas. Thank you
Yes. Went through the mice invasion.they ate my flour tortillas..not happy!! Got item in hard plastic with lids containers.
