    Thank you, Mindy, for being such a light to all of us! And thank you for thinking of Florida! I live in central Florida. It was a very harrowing night as the worst part of Ian passed over us around 2am. We received only very minimal damage but many of those south of us lost everything. I can't even imagine what they are going through.

    Here’s some other ideas:
    Canned beef stew with instant potatoes
    No bean chili, mixed vegetables, and instant potatoes to make a little shepherds pie.
    Dehydrated hash browns with bacon bits (also good with some sort of shelf stable cheese product and wrapped in a tortilla - the flour tortillas at Dollar Tree seem to have a pretty long shelf life).

I'm a massive stroke survivor at a young age (1 month from turning 36) in 2013, and now disabled in a wheelchair with right side weakness. I love your channel & videos cos you've given me many ideas on how to make great meals for just myself (I'm single) that can be stretched into many days on a very limited budget (SSI-Disability). Thank You Very Much!!!! 😊💯

    Oh, Mindy, Having just gone through Ian in SW Florida, as I was watching, I couldn't help but think of how handy this would have been. Not just for me to use, but to give away to people in need. There were, and still are, so many. This is awesome, and will be on my list for next hurricane season. I do have a lot of home canned meals, and we definitely did not go hungry! One thing I might add to this, is that any meal bags requiring water have an appropriate size bottle included. I know it seems silly, but we had power before water, and then we were on a boil water notice for a week. Also, if you are on a well, no power means no water. Just a thought, so in a hurricane situation, people wouldn't be using up their drinking water to cook. Again, thank you so much! This is a great idea!

    I feel like it would be a nice idea to donate a bunch of these to a food pantry/food bank. I expect people who use their services often end up with an assorted mix of ingredients and then have to figure out what to cook with them, what other ingredients they would need to use them in a recipe, etc. So having a "everything in a bag" meal with instructions would probably make it easier. And of course they could always use the ingredients in other ways too.

    it's also an idea to have a way to heat those (and water) in case you have no way to heat - no electricity or fireplace or gas. A fondue pot with the sterno or candles works wonders to do heating for emergencies like this. And remember -t hose dates don't mean anything - they don't magically expire on that date. They can be good for many many months later, and some years later for canned goods. You can also get shelf-stable milk at DollarTree for less ;)

    • @silentbanshee4869
      @silentbanshee4869 Год назад +6

      I bought myself a vintage fondue pot and sterno a few months back. It came in sooo handy. I used it for everything during Ian. We lost electricity for a few days but I still had coffee (instant) and my son had his tea. Also was able to heat up premade hamburgers and other things. Will be buying more sterno because I went thru a lot of it.

    • @sonnyandcobi
      @sonnyandcobi Год назад +6

      Thank you for mentioning the dates. I've had people ignore me when I tell them the date is just an arbitrary date assigned by the manufacturer and many things, like sugar, tea, rice etc. don't expire at all. Many canned goods are still good up to a year or more after that date. It all depends on the condition of the can (dented, rusty) or packaging and the storage conditions. There are websites on the internet that gives information on when things really expire. Also thank you for reminding me about the possibility of no heat source. A gas grill comes in real handy but I never thought about a fondue pot and sterno in case I can't get to the grill.

    The last time we had a power outage in winter, we heated up the smoker (we always have lump charcoal year round. Good emergency tip) and cooked as much meat as we could and repackaged and froze it in coolers with snow. We didn’t want to lose so much of our freezer. We still lost ice creams and veggies etc (we couldn’t eat ice cream fast enuf). But the meat was the higher dollar stuff. I had ready made meals for a while after the power came back. We didn’t keep them long term just in case.

We didn't end up needing them but when our electricity went out I was putting bottles of water and sodas and juices out in the snow to get cold and I figured I could do the same thing with the milk and at least the kids would have access to milk and I wouldn't have to worry about anything spoiling and it would be nice and cold. Plus the cereal milk is a treat and what kid doesn't deserve a treat especially during times where adults are a little stressed you know

    I love the emergency meal kits box for a lot of reasons! Maybe also consider putting an old pot and a casserole dish and a small pkg of paper plates/utensils in the bottom of the box. That way in emergency situations where a family would have to leave their house quickly, you don't have to remember to grab that stufff, just the tote and go. (edited to add: My sister and her young family were living in a dbl-wide trailer in KS in the '90s right after they got married. My dad was watching news, saw a tornado was about to touch down just a couple miles from their house, called and told her to get out right now! They barely had time to grab the baby, her purse, and get in the car. They came back to find their trailer demolished.)

      While there is so much to be grateful for, like the fact that they were able to get out unscathed. The amount of stress that must have put on them as a young family just breaks my heart. To lose your home do to that level of devastation breaks my heart. Thank goodness they were not in there when it happened.

    On the tuna meal maybe use campbells canned cheese soup or the nacho(??) cheese canned instead of the velveeta. I pass on the velveeta because of price and taste. Love all ur videos and ideas thanks Mindy

    Great ideas for shelf stable meals. I shopped my shelves and put up several last month. I have mine on the bottom of the pantry too!
    Taco soup n cheesy chili mac made it in mine, too.

    Aldi Cheese shells are good. Just add a small can of tuna or small can of chicken for a huge meal with your favorite seasonings. Feeds 4. Walmart also has a small can chopped ham. Emergency bag item. Last winter I had to learn real quick how to cook on my fire place. :-)🍜

    I love this I've definitely got to get these together! We've definitely had terrible winter storms when we've been out of power for 24/48 hours and now that we actually have two little ones it opens my eyes to this stuff

    I'm changing the tunes casserole..either cream of mushroom or cream of celery because I just not into mixing meat.🤦‍♀️ I'm crazy. No cheese because my mom never but cheese in tuna casserole and im not going to start.
    Have you ever looked in the camping section? Frezzer dried camp meals are fun even if pricy...

    My Mom had a mock tuna casserole that doesn't use noodles. Cream of chicken soup, tuna, and crushed potato chips. I'm sure the sodium is crazy, but it works! She would top it with some of the chips, also. I still make it sometimes ... super quick and comforting!

    One of my favorite ideas I got from you was taking spaghetti/pasta sauce and added cream or half & half to it to make a tomato soup.... I've never liked tomato soup before, but I like this... Thanks for the idea. .

    Mindy, good options for Velveeta cheese is Campbell's cheese soup, canned cheese, such as nacho cheese or the Velveeta individual cheese packets. And you can steal one from the cheese and shells. Funny story my sister and I were going to mske goulash from leftover chili. I thought we had elbow macaroni. As you may have guessed, we didn't hsve any, so I raised the Kraft Mac and cheese box for its packet if cheese sauce.
