  • Hello & Welcome back to Caravan Escapades and welcome to this Vlog, While at the NEC show in February I came across this company that is selling electric retractable tow bars that can be retro fitted. As I bought the GLS second hand this did not have one fitted and it is only a factory fit option when ordering the car to have an Electric Retractable one fitted. So, this sparked my interest and thought it might be of interest to some of you as well.

Hi James, The electric socket built into the side of the tow bar is the same as factory fit retractable tow bars. I have the factory fit retractable tow bar on my Audi A6 allroad, but because it’s an older model it’s a manual release. Definitely one to consider if purchasing a second hand tow car. Cheers Rob 👍

Hi Rob, I am just hoping they develop one for the GLS, I am happy for them to use me as a Gunnie Pig LOL

I have had an electrically deployable tow bar on my last couple of Range Rovers. What I though was a novelty quickly became a must have. Retrofitting for Land Rover and Audi is around £2800 so that's a bloody good price. I should mention that the RR electrics does power the fridge and ATC. Also good with LED lights.

I do hope they develop one for the GLS having had Discoveries before I have only ever had the Detachable or Fixed.

Hi James with reference to what Rob has said regarding the 13pin on the automatic towing bar.
I looked at having BMW to fix one to the x5 but I believe that they don’t have the electric option to power the fridge on the move, not sure about ATC Which requires live feed.
So be aware of this and be worth asking the question. Show looked great never been to one but probably go next one.

Hi Thanks for watching and commenting, I am guessing as I already have a fully working 13 Pin Socket that the Electrics for the 134 pin in the Tow Hitch could be picked up from there and all should be good, I will keep you guys updated should they develop one for the GLS

    Very interesting, excellent find BTW...
I did look on their website, but there doesn't seem to be any UK dealers. Also, I'm a little doubtful that £1200 fitted will be the final price. As with you, I paid about £1k for the detachable, but, if it's no more difficult to fit, then maybe it's possible I guess. I think a clever bit of sales technique there, as it made me google it, whereas if it was £2k, I wouldn't have bothered..
Good point made by others regarding electrics, fridge etc. When I had my rear camera fitted, it didn't work. This was because the 12v to the fridge connection wasn't working (it uses that for power) simple fix and think it was down to the AA fitting a new battery.

Hi Graham, He did say to me off camera that they were setting up a Network of UK Installers, I guess they will approach existing Tow Bar Installers. They also have a base in Whitchurch Shropshire. Agree with the Electrics, however If I have it working on my 13 pin socket already then surely the one ion the Hitch should be able to be fully powered. I will query it with them and feed back. The Motor Power for the Tow Bar is fed from the Boot Hatch Light, Primarily so it cant be operated if the boot Hatch isn't open.

@@CaravanEscapades101 Haha yes that’s right I plan to create a nationwide network of tow bar installers 😆Hopefully things progress for them. It’s a cracking idea
