Birthed by the great whore under the shimmering gaze of blood moon’s rise on some cursed night in 2009, Mexico’s Luciferian Rites - El Águila Real’s prominent black metal band - have since gained notoriety as one of the underground scene’s most worthy Suomi-inspired black metal outfits. Intoxicatingly melodic, modest in product and misery-soaked to the bone, their mission, their music an homage to the great Finnish way of creating TRUE black metal: Satanic, depressive, melancholy… fucking deadly… And now within the chill of winter’s icy grip, under the cold glow of the moon once more, Luciferian Rites are set to draw forth from the void their newest epitaph. On January 26, “Oath of Midnight Ashes” will be released via Moribund Records.
Luciferian Rites’ music is not a carbon copy. Aside from the band’s obvious Finnish influences, there’s generally a lot more going on apart from those telltale melodies as genres are crossed from black metal into gothic during the intro to “Bats of Crimson Wisdom” and visuals-inducing soundscapes are beheld in “Behind the Leviathan Storm”. Each cut unique in their own ways with the former offering the most intense few minutes of album runtime but also a couple of the most heartwarming. Once again with those moving tremolo riffs and those despairing vocals; wraithlike shrieks that cut through the thick of the melancholy; manifesting from the background an air of urgency… of pure fucking suffering…
“Oath of Midnight Ashes” - an album so boldly described as “true black metal.” This term usually triggers snivelers into a tiff but for those under the Black Mark who understand that true black metal is real and not just an idea, we genuinely appreciate records like this one: it’s underground residence, the stripped down production quality, the energy, the passion and the soul. As if it were crafted in His warm presence and radiating genuine, unfiltered Satanic energy. Warmth that only stretches so far before its lost to the frigid air of the album’s cold-chasmic atmosphere.
Less is more… Luciferian Rites could’ve or should I say should’ve cut about 12 minutes off of this thing in order to tie together some of its bewildering parts that feel something like a black metal salad as opposed to nice, air-tight compositions. Coloring a bit outside the lines as it were. Aside from its rather exhausting runtime, “Oath of Midnight Ashes”, with all of its many great moments peppered throughout, is a worthy black metal album and one that some of us have been waiting some time for.
