I'm back! I was sick for the first few weeks of the new year and didn't have the energy or the voice to make content, but I am hoping to get back on a regular schedule.
"The Wearing of the Green" is a traditional Irish street ballad lamenting the repression of supporters of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 led by the Society of United Irishmen who had been inspired by the French revolution a decade prior. It is sung to an old Irish melody, and many versions of the lyric exist, the best-known by Dion Boucicault which proclaims "they are hanging men and women for the wearing of the green".
The revolutionary Society of United Irishmen adopted green as its color, and supporters wore green-colored garments, ribbons, etc.
    Lyrics:
Oh! Paddy, dear, now did you hear
    The news that's going round,
The shamrock is by law forbid
    To grow on Irish ground.
Saint Patrick's Day no more we'll keep
    His color can't be seen
For there hangin' men and women for
    The wearing of the green.
    I met with Napper Tandy
And he took me by the hand
And he said "How's poor old Ireland?
    And how does she stand?"
    She's the most distressful country
    That ever you have seen,
They're hanging men and women for
    For wearing of the green.
    2. Then since the color we must wear
    Is England's cruel red
Sure Ireland's sons will n'er forget
The blood that they have shed.
You may take the shamrock from your hat
And cast it on the sod,
But 'twill take root and flourish still
    Tho' underfoot 'tis trod.
    3. But if at last our color should
    Be torn from Ireland's heart,
Her sons with shame and sorrow
From the dear old sod will part.
    I've heard a whisper of a country
    That lies beyond the sea,
Where rich and poor stand equal
In the light of freedom's day.
Oh, Erin! Must we leave you,
    Driven by the tyrant's hand?
Must we ask a mother's welcome
From a strange but happy land?
Where the cruel cross of England
    shall never more be seen
And in that land we'll live and die
for the wearing of the green.
For the wearing of the green
For the wearing of the green
They're hangin' men and women for
    the wearing of the green

Oh, Paddy dear, now did you hear the news that's goin' 'round?
The shamrock is by law forbid to grow on Irish ground!
Saint Patrick's Day no more we'll keep, his colors can't be seen
For they're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green!
Oh, I met with Napper Tandy, he took me by the hand
He said "How's dear old Ireland, and how does she stand?"
"She's the most distressful country that you have ever seen
For they're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green!"
For the wearing of the green, for the wearing of the green

You may take the shamrock from your hat and cast it on the sod
But 'twill take root and flourish still, though underfoot 'tis trod
My father loved his country, and sleeps within its breast
While I, that would have died for her, must never so be blest
Those tears my mother shed for me, how bitter they'd have been
If I had proved a traitor to the wearing of the green
For the wearing of the green, for the wearing of the green
They're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green
But if at last our colors should be torn from Ireland's heart
Her sons with shame and sorrow from the dear old isle will part
I've heard a whisper of a land that lies beyond the sea
Where rich and poor stand equal in the light of freedom's day
Oh, Ireland, must we leave you, driven by a tyrant's hand
And seek a mother's blessing from a strange and distant land
Where the cruel cross of England shall never more be seen
And in that land we'll live and die for the wearing of the green
For the wearing of the green, for the wearing of the green

I see here in the comments that this song has brought about some good conversations that aren’t often had these days. What I admire about you is that you don’t only sing the popular, cheery tunes, you sing the songs that talk about truth and reality. While not about this particular song, A teaching moment came about from the cover you did of Saint Patrick’s Battalion. A friend of mine, who while not heavily Irish in blood but more in spirit, I sent her that song, and she said good song, but was skeptical of the concept. She wasn’t aware that the St.Patrick’s Battalion was real, and we had a decent talk about it. So the thing about music, the sad and somber songs, they serve a great purpose, and I’m glad there are people like you who still sing them.

I put together a playlist of songs that remind me of my honeymoon in ireland with the love of my life. This cover definitely reminds me of drinking full cups of fireball whiskey with our good friend paul in his living room somewhere in northern ireland, picking around on his guitars and singing together through the night and then waking up half drunk to shovel down some bacon and beans on toast and guzzle tea before heading to the giant's causeway. It was the most amazing place in the world and we had the best time at the quiet little villages, just browsing the shops and historic buildings. Thanks for taking me back to that, even if just for a moment.❤

    • @sethstatonwatkins
      @sethstatonwatkins  Год назад +1

Oh no doubt the line about a land across the sea is false and lacks nuance. I try not to take that line too seriously and focus on their story in Ireland. The Irish were treated horribly when they immigrated to the United States, and of course would have then witnessed the abject horrors of chattel slavery and indigenous genocide, to the dismay of many, like Thomas Meagher.

    • @petergilligan3010
      @petergilligan3010 Год назад +1

@@sethstatonwatkins Your comment blatantly show how you have been brainwashed into thinking that Irish nationalism is about civil right when it is evidently not. I say this partially because "the line about a land across the sea" is not about North America rather it is about France and the Irish of 98 who had to flee to France such as Napper Tandy. This just shows that you know absolutely nothing. I honestly find it disgusting that degenerates such as you try to equate themselves to Irish Nationalist who died fighting for their homeland and religion. You are not an Irish Nationalist, you care not for the people of Ireland, you care not about preserving Irish identity, sovereignty and/or culture. You simply care for advancing your own twisted degenerate worldview and you simply want to infiltrate Irish nationalism and republicanism and use it as a way to further your own degenerate agenda! SHAME!!! SHAME!!! SHAME!!!

Ahem..."The best-known version is by Dion Boucicault, adapted for his 1864 play Arragh na Pogue, or the Wicklow Wedding, set in County Wicklow during the 1798 rebellion. In the second verse, Boucicault's version recounts an encounter between the singer and Napper Tandy, an Irish rebel leader exiled in France. Boucicault claimed to have based his version on a half-remembered Dublin street ballad. His addition of the third and last verses is in notable contrast to the middle verse in advocating emigration to America rather than staying in defiance. Boucicault himself fled to New York after leaving his wife for a young actress." The narrator is in France at the start of the song, but refers to the United States in that verse. Also, I have never claimed to be an Irish nationalist, I merely show support for revolutionary causes including Irish reunification, but also those led by the people of Palestine, Yemen, Iran, etc. But all that aside, anyone that gets this angry about the use of a song to advocate for basic human rights is a bad egg.

    • @sethstatonwatkins
      @sethstatonwatkins  Год назад

This is one source (magazine.uc.edu/editors_picks/recent_features/leininger_miller.html) but it also just makes sense given the chronology of the song. He is already in France talking with Napper Tandy by verse 2 so it wouldn't make sense for him to reference France again as nothing more than mere whispers. Also, the lyricist immigrated to the United States and likely wrote that verse in relation to his own desires. That verse was not part of the original street ballad but was added later, in the 1840s by Dion. Second, you seem confused about how any of this works. It just so happens that both of those songs were heavily requested by my viewers, many of whom are Irish. I don't like Sean South. He was a right wing fascist and I only sang that song because I enjoy the melody, and again it was requested of me. I made clear in the description that I do not agree with his politics (a sentiment shared by many of my viewers as well). Next, "My Old Man's a Provo" is a parody enjoyed by many people, most of whom are far removed from the politics and I did not use either of these songs to promote my worldview (read the descriptions). Regarding the PIRA, they did distance themselves from traditional Marxist/Leninist/Maoist communism but they were still majority socialist (unlike Sean South). They began to downplay their socialist beliefs to gain support from Irish Americans but they also received money and weapons from eastern bloc countries that would have been at the approval of the Soviet Union. Their major disagreement with the OIRA was related to their desire to continue their reliance on brute force rather than sit-ins, protests, electoral victories, etc. but a socialist republic was still their stated goal. People like Sean South (capitalist, fascist, imperialist shills...he openly admired the likes of A.K. Chesterton, a leading British fascist) were a minority and that was well known in his time, even among other conservative Catholics. For you to simply overlook and discount the majority socialist Irish revolutionaries over the last century is hypocritical at best, and blatantly treacherous at worst. Finally, many native Irish relate their own historical strife to the contemporary struggles of different peoples across the globe, and those struggling do the same when they listen to these songs and find courage to fight their own battles. This is evident in my own comment sections. That is the wonderous legacy of these songs that you would have tarnished by your xenophobia.
