Actually, he didn't do it that way because he can't do it that way. Paul hasn't been able to sing in years, and even though he shifted it to a low register key to play it safe, it still came out sounding as bad as it did.

The National Anthem isn’t easy. I’ve heard people criticize him for not singing it with flourishes, when he did it perfect. It should be sung with respect and that exactly what he did. Well done Paul!

Yeah she probably likes bullshit “music” where the untalented artists can’t even play a musical instrument or write a song such as Cardi B, Fergie, Beyonce, Rhianna, and Lil Wayne and stuff like that.
I think Paul does a good job. He starts out in a low, safe key wich is very professional of him. And instead of trying to show off a rock voice he simply doesn't have anymore he basically sings the song like it's written - like it was supposed to be sung before all the soulqueens thrashed it with ridicilous wailing. The Star Spangled Banner is an extremely hard song to sing, it requires an incredible range...most people can't sing it...and many people get criticized when they sing it at public events, and it doesn't come out perfect. I personally think The US needs a new national anthem...one that's easier for the average American to sing..."America the Beautiful" would be a great song...and not full of violent imagery

Wow, I loved how he didn't start deviating from the original melody by adding a bunch of runs, over singing or shouting at us. He sang very well. He has a very nice voice💕👍
He did it like a professional, aware of his limits (nowadays). But I wish he would have gotten these kind of opportunities on top of his game, back in 1990-2000. THAT would have been CLASSIC!

Paul needs to hang it up already. No one wants to see some 80 year old douchebag in Kabuki makeup trying to hit on teenage girls. The only reason KISS lasted this long is they cater to the same mindset as Spears and Beiber...
Paul is not Sebastian Bach, that's for sure. Paul is hugely successful, great song writer, excellent rhythm guitarist, brilliant businessman and possibly one of the top 5 frontmen in rock history. So yeah, he ain't Sebastian Bach.

Goodness, reading some of these comments before listening, I thought for sure that Paul's voice may have failed him on this number. However, actually listening, it was not so bad whatsoever, all things considered. Remember, Paul is at 62 years and lived a life of decadence. His resiliency is in fact one of his hallmark qualities. He was an early inspiration for me. He's held up well. Cheers to Paul.
***** He was never Geoff Tate (in his prime), but that wasn't the intended sound of Kiss. They never really set out to focus on music. They were entertainers and their model worked with astonishing success. That said, I liked Paul's sound (Black Diamond, etc.). He was a great influence of mine. (Meaning, stage presence. All but the guitar smashing which I regarded as juvenile.) And as far as "enough sense to get Ace (Frehley) and Peter to the band," well, not exactly. Ace was good, but not necessarily special. Same with Peter. Peter made a name for himself with the vocals for Beth, but not much beyond that. Neither were the driving force (or the brains) of the band. In fact, most in-the-know in their circles revealed that both had substance and alcohol problems. Peter would say that he was exploited and never paid his share. Gene would say that Peter never deserved his share being such a dope. You follow? Gene and Paul never got caught up in the vices. They regarded the band as a business (and took it seriously) more than just a vehicle for decadence (even though the latter did occur). That's why Paul and Gene were irreplaceable while the others were always temporary attachments along the way. Regard them as contractors if you will.
The mark of a good singer is if they can pull off a standard like this. No, he wasn't as bad as everyone has said on this, but without all of the clean up in the studio or the super loud guitars and sound in a live performance, the performance has to stand on its own. It was ok
Christopher Jones Actually, other than a lot of sex, he lived a pretty clean life. Hard working, frantic, busy and crazy, but not a lot of alcohol and drugs.
glennpagemusic. Concurred. Perhaps decadence wasn't exactly the best word if one is to presume strictly stimulants. A lavish, promiscuous lifestyle can be regarded as decadence as well. The many years of wide open, carefree lifestyle with with deficient sleep, atrocious diets and resulting health issues therefrom didn't aid him, especially when one considers just how long this group has performed (probably more overall shows that almost everyone else). Paul also deals with deafness in his right ear and has been hospitalized several times for other factors. All told, he's held up well.
Paul's singing voice is one of power. When he's doing a restricted low key type song, such as this, he sounds like a normal guy just trying to do his best. If he would have sang it with his typical power voice it would have been amazing, but he would have drawn boo's from the crowd had he done it that way. It's good that he took a very humble approach to singing this song.
Paul has not been able to sing very well over the last ten years. He can't hit the high notes anymore which is why he purposely played it safe by singing in a low register key.
