I think that a lot people gives him more credit than he deserves, mostly for his good looks (think Tom Cruise) their acting is okay and even good but not great or Oscar worthy. I mean I like Jude's role in Enemy at the gate, The talented Mr Ripley, Midnight in the garden of good and evil; Tom Cruise's I like only 2 movies Collateral and Valkyrie that could've been worth a support actor award at most.
