The way it looks now is not the magic behind it. When you watch them, the first thing that hits you is how the "white" normally men were with their words. If you stick with it, what normally happens is the man comes off as bad, and those jokes you laughed at make you then start doing the "Do I sound like that?" It's hard to explain, but for people who grew up with these shows (there were a lot), the idea was to make you laugh and make you see that you do not want to be like that person. Clever stuff.

It is another TV series that poke fun at the absurdity of racism. Yet today would be considered by some to be a racist show.
This show, and 'Love Thy Neighbour' used racism to expose sexism. The men threw racist epithets at each other all day, but they were all in cahoots. Listen to these men......they are all just out for themselves. In the end, the women always won out. You could throw Syd James in here, or even Archie Bunker from America, who'd be calling them Limeys but their wives would gang up on them, and they'd be sleeping on the sofa/couch/settee depending where you're from.
Alf Garnet was a funny character because he was so racist and right wing. Sadly our politicians these days seem to have adopted his views, without ant sense of irony.

The show is a parody pointing out the foolishness of such views , the character of Alf Garnet is always the butt of the jokes. The series with Eamonn Walker { Winston } was in the late 1980's. Warren Mitchell was Jewish and made jokes in the Alf Garnet character
