South West Trains at windy Woking

  • Today I present a short film of Woking station in England. I was travelling through Woking in November 2016 and had some time to kill. It was quite windy on this day, so apologies if the video appears a bit more jittery than usual.
    Woking is a major station on the South Western Main Line that runs out of London Waterloo. The station sees very frequent train services from and to London Waterloo, many of which are fast services, possibly only additionally calling at Clapham Junction before London Waterloo.
    The station has 6 platforms. Platform 1 is for up slow services, platform 2 for up fast services; platform 3 is a bay platform for Waterloo stopping services (not shown in the film), platform 4 is for down fast and platform 5 for down slow services. Platform 6 is not in much use as far as I know.
    In the film we see some of the frequent Waterloo-bound trains as well as some platform alterations happening. Announcements are by Celia Drummond and Phil Sayer, but on this day there have been some manual announcements as well.
    Enjoy!
    Recorded: November 22, 2016.

    Hey nice video. You should film Guildford station too! It is busier than Woking and has numerous different companies serving it. Also 8 platforms I think? There's usually at least 1 train in all the time.

    Hi, Luftschlange; many thanks for your upload. Great video.
    A couple of points - it's interesting to see that the platform train display is perfectly readable on your video, whereas many other uploads on RUclips have that annoying jitter effect caused by the phase shift or frame frequency discrepancy between the display unit and the uploader's camera. Well done.
    When is it NOT windy at Woking station? lol Whenever I've waited for a train there it's ALWAYS been bl**dy cold and windy, even in summer!

    I used to live in Woking when I was 19-20. Used to "escape" what I saw as the worst town in England to Waterloo whenever I could. It only cost me a tenner or something ridiculous.

    Nice video and if you want to compare South West trains with NYC commuter rail its going to be Metro North and LIRR because both Metro North and Long Island Railroad are electrified to 750v dc third rail top contact for Long Island Railroad but bottom contact for Metro North. Class 444 is equal to LIRR & Metro North M7s since they replaced older trains in the class 444 its the Class 412 & 414 but m7 replaced the M1 for LIRR and Metro North

    I love the trains! What model are they?

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 лет назад

      They are lovely, indeed. The blue electric ones are Class 450, the white electric ones are Class 444. Both are part of the Siemens Desiro family of trains. The diesel unit at 6:09 is a Class 159 train. Wikipedia has more information on any of these.

      Luftschlange cool! How many people where there when you were filming? Was it busy or almost empty?

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 лет назад

      It wasn’t too busy, I was there around noon on a weekday, so most people were already at work. I guess you can get an impression of how busy it was from the scenes which show more of the platform.

    One question: What is that "twizzling" noise some of those MU electrics make when they brake for a stop and when they accelerate?

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 лет назад +2

      +TheChicagoL That is the DC inverter for the traction motors.
