  • Really? I'm going there? Just for fun I put the Jackson Concert Bass CBXNT DX IV - more succinctly known as "The Jackenbacker" - up against its design inspiration the Rickenbacker 4003. What do you think? Is there a comparison? Do you care? Let me know in the comments.

For 1/3 the price..... Jackson wins!

      I'm embarrassed to say... I own a Rickenbacker 4003.
Biggest mistake I've ever made was buying that POS.

Depending on if you go new or used or what vendor... it's more like 1/5th the price

I won't lie, I'm a big fan of the OLD Charvel/Jackson gear, but I always wanted a Ricky, but after hearing them head-to-head?
I'll take the Jackson at 1/3 the price, and no significant tonal difference, my SansAmp has that covered!

I like the Rick for its vintage style and legacy. I like the Jackson for its uniqueness. Sound wise it seems the Rick was warmer and the Jackson was a bit more treble sonically. I wouldn't turn down that Jackson because I do like it.

Rickenbacker tone absolutely rocks! But does it sound $3,000 better? Something I'll have to wrestle with...(while I keep adding small $$ to my Rick savings bucket (list)...

Its naturaly Scooped sounding Deep Bass Neck Pickup and Treble Bridge Pickup, no real midrange,
its a great sound........P-Bass pickups sound the same on any bass, punchy midrange and tight bass

    .
When playing a Rick (live) you find yourself contorting because it's so uncomfortable.
That being said... The vast majority of Rick owners don't use them for gigs anyway.

The thing that stand out is that the Jackson sounds louder because of the preamp. That's about it. If they were played at the same volume, I think the richness of the Rick would be more evident.

I've had a few Rick basses, and recently got the Jackson. And returned it a couple weeks later. I absolutely loved the sound, and the instrument felt good under my fingers (neck and action), but there were just too many egregious build issues with the Jackson. Loose fittings, unreliable jack that would randomly become noisy. But the worst was the metal cover over the bridge pickup (which you didn't show). The setup resulted in strings sometimes buzzing against the cover. None of this was terrible, but taken together, for a new instrument, I didn't want to start repairing it. Add to that that the instrument was the single most difficult to tune in 45 years of playing -- I don't know if there was something wrong with the bridge, nut, tuners, etc., but it just wouldn't stay stable. And finding good intonation took hours -- again, something just didn't seem right. The instrument wasn't stable. I gave it a couple weeks, but just too many small things wrong.
So I returned it to Guitar center, and then tried out 6 other similar model basses they had from Jackson. And here's where I discover that Jackson faithfully reproduced Rickenbacker's extreme inconsistencies, instrument-to-instrument. I used to collect these, and always found Rickenbacker's to be generally not very positive instruments in my hands -- but a few were pure gold. I think the Jackson's might be similar. Of the instruments I tried, there was one that seemed to check all but one box - tone, feel, quality build, setup, etc. -- but it was a 5, and I'm looking for a 4. If they'd had a 4 with that same quality, it would have come home with me. Sadly, all the 4 strings had a variety of minor annoyances, which *maybe* I could work around, but after my experience with the one bass that felt so good in the store, but revealed so many problems when setting it up, I'm unwilling to do the work Jackson didn't seem bothered to do.

I love the reference to Jackson reproducing Rickenbacker’s inconsistencies! The bass was loaned to me and the owner removed the cover because he despised it. My experience with the Jacksons in stores have been similar to yours. Very inconsistent with annoying quality issues.

@@KPJohnson The Ric is the kind of bass, kinda like an eb-3, that you could find yourself falling in love with so hard that you overlook its shortcomings, and even its inflated price tag, to get a piece of that legit vibe for yourself...personally, I've never vibed with a Fender as hard as I have with my Ric, and it will never leave me, though several Fenders have come and gone

I tried a Black Jackson I fell in love in with the look, but it played and sounded meh, I tried a white one, and it played and sounded so great I bought it despite wanting a black one.
Lower action, less buzz and just totally more alive sounding.
I got it for $500 a steal at that price!
I expect QC variances in a $800 bass, but a $2500 Rick? Still if they made a 5 string, I'd jump on one.

Thanks for the commentary and playing. They both do their own thing, but the Jackson is the better and more affordable instrument. Granted, your experience may differ. I love the look of both.
Aside: It's interesting that the "binding" on the Jackson is painted, while the even more affordable (AKA a third of the price) Harley Benton is actual binding.

  • @boopsnoot2807

I think the Jackson had a more modern contemporary sound and was slightly brighter. I think if it was mixed well, you wouldn’t hear the different. Ultimately, a Rick is a Rick, but for a third of the price, the Jacksonbacker takes the win here

Jackson had more aggression is tone once it was just single pickups being tested.
