What a great video, I've no idea why you don't you have more subscribers??? Wow. I owned two 4001's back in the 80's and traded one for a Wal. Iconic and unique basses.
Man… a Wal! I have only ever seen one in real life! I played it and that thing was beyond amazing! I hope you still have it, but if not you were very fortunate to have had time with such a beautiful work of art. I am a huge fan of Rush so if you have (or had) 2 4001s and a Wal you are my kind of guy! Thanks for the compliment! These videos are such a passion project for me that I’ll keep making them even if nobody watches. I just love guitars and basses (and drums, some drum stuff on my channel as well). As far as being a small channel I believe there are a few reasons. First and foremost there is just so much stuff on RUclips that it is hard for people to know your channel even exists. But nice people like you commenting helps the algorithm feel I must have content worthy of promoting. Also, that little bell doesn’t get clicked very much and you can be subscribed but not get notified if the notification bell isn’t clicked. Weird system but that’s the way it works. I’m happy to just work hard and earn the attention my channel gets one subscriber at a time. Lastly, I wasn’t consistent enough with how often I put out videos. In 2023 I put my money where my mouth is and took a pay cut to have the time to do it right. So now I put out a new video every Saturday. Also, I have things I am very excited about in the works that I believe will help grow my channel much quicker. I hope I’m right but only time will tell. @@REXYLAB I bought the Wal brand new in 1985 for £700 and received £350 for a trade in on my 4001 (an early 70's model). Believe it or not the Wal preamp was astounding and the tone was gorgeous but I just couldn't get on with the ergonomics and weight (12lbs!) I eventually swapped it for a Jaydee Supernatural. Nowadays I mostly play an Enfield Lionheart which is very similar to Wal but with improved ergonomics (in my opinion). I knew that, i had a 1971 4001, used Stereo out with a Y double cable at the end, one went into my Sunn Colesium for Lows and the other to a 100 watt Marshall Plexi I learned this from Chris Squire
Isn’t it crazy that Chris Squirer’s Rick was an RM that was originally mono? If memory serves he got the 3rd or 4th one imported to England and was lucky to get it (the reason for the RM instead of the S designation after the 4001 was for Rose Morris, the importer of Rickenbacker to the UK). I really love Yes and Chris Squire’s bass is so super unique. He took it a step further than I did in the demo by only putting certain effects on one pickup or the other… brilliant! It’s no secret that Geddy Lee got a Rick because he was chasing Chris Squire’s tone. Therefore I find it perplexing that when he played with Yes instead of dusting off one of his many Rickenbackers he played a jazz bass? Especially considering they probably would have moved heaven and earth to get Squire’s rig to the rock and roll hall of fame for Geddy to use that one and only time. What a missed opportunity! It doesn’t matter though because they still killed it and I can’t think of anyone better to fill Chris’s shoes than Geddy for that event, his bass tone was amazing! Side note, Rick Wakeman can still rock the fuck out of any cape on planet earth! I am willing to be you already knew all that. This is what happens though when I geek out about gear I love. I can’t shut up about it.

I like my 4001 set up like you. Neck pickup clean and bridge with a bit of overdrive to dirty it up. I don't roll the tone off the neck, I want a bit if clang to come through.

I dream of owning a Ric someday. I think I'm going to save up for a 4001 though. I know the 4003 improved on the 4001 in certain ways, but I hear the 4001 has a thinner neck. That's important to me.

One of my basses is set up in a similar way with each pickup going to individual outputs, which I then run into two inputs on my helix which then allows me to switch pickups and blend them to taste inside of the helix. My presets change effects and pickups.
That sounds awesome! Does it switch between the amps or do you have some wild 13 pin thing that actually switches pickups on the guitar? Please elaborate. I’m currently working on a pretty crazy idea combining Rick-O-Sound with the extremely unique wiring of the Peavey T-40. I figure I need to decide on what I want to enhance that tone. I’m thinking it will probably be more of a studio instrument. Got any ideas?
@@REXYLAB each pickup goes directly to a mono 1/4" output, I then run 2 cables into the left and right input on my Line6 HX Effects. In the HX I can run a signal chain for each pickup, and then apply effect and change the levels of each of the signals before it is combined in to single output. There are no volume or tone controls on the bass, this is all handled in the pedal (I use an expression pedal to control volume and other effects. I switch tones quite a bit and so having it linked to presets on the pedal made it easy. I can even change presets using midi when using a computer for playback in live shows. when using it in the studio I will sometimes just record both pickups separately and then decide what to use later

@@LizardWizard_ that’s great! The T-40 is a sweet bass. When I do my fancy Rick/T-40 hybrid I will be corresponding the only problem I think the T-40 electronics have.
I have a Ric 4003. It's SIGNIFICANTLY different than any other bass I own. The tone is "clanky" and percussive. I have some amps that really like it, and it's become a favorite instrument in the arsenal. I have a few other basses that are at the complete opposite end of the spectrum... and I like those too for certain things. If you are a Ric player, then you know.... if you don't know, you don't know. My Ric-O-Sound rig is a pair of Kustom 200's each with their own 3x15" cab. It kicks more ass than Chuck Norris.
That sounds pretty bad ass! And yeah, we f you know you know and if you don’t know you don’t know! I’m currently working on a bass that will have electronics like if a 4003 and a T-40 had a baby that went to Michigan on a wrestling scholarship. I hope you come back for that one!

I'm surprised they went this route for the Ric-O-Sound stereo function. I always think of my keyboards that I've used over the years that had two output jacks. Left/mono or if you plugged a cable into the right output as well the totoal output between the two jacks was stereo. So what would happed if you plugged a stereo cable out of the Ric-O-sound jack and another out of thre normal jack? Would you actually now have 3 sound sources? stereo bridge/neck and mono both.
Good suggestion! I guess I didn’t explain it quite well enough so I’ll elaborate here. The TRS tip comes out to 2 TS cables. Basically, one cable is tip and ground and the other is ring and ground. It’s a stereo cable with 3 tips. One stereo tip (TRS) and two mono tips (TS). I just plug the TRS end into the Rick-o-sound output of the bass. Then one TS directly into one amp and the other into another amp. That’s it! You don’t need any fancy splitters or anything if you don’t want them. Now you could run them into 2 different pedal boards and have say a distorted delay on the bridge and a big chorus on the neck. That would actually be pretty bitchin’. I did work out a way to do this with one output on the instrument. It will be demonstrated on an Ibanez SZ with some pretty versatile pickups. This is actually a prototype design I created for The Squishy Guitar Project,a nonprofit organization that gives guitars to children with rare and terminal diseases. I've made a splitter cable for my 4003 using a simple microphone cable with TRS Plug that goes to the stereo (Rick'o'Sound) jack of the bass and a male XLR on the other side, so you have just one cable from your bass to your pedalbiard/amps. Then I have a short adapter cable with female XLR where two separate thin mono instrument cables are routed to two 1/4" mono plugs for the Individual amps/channels. Simple Solution that works perfectly for me.

That is possible and it has been done. My biggest recommendation would be to take it easy on the speaker or get a bass speaker so those low frequencies don’t rumble the thing apart. Distortion (the bad kind from pushing something too hard) blows more speakers than most anything else.

I had a 1980. Put the highs thru a Peavey TNT and the lows thru an Acoustic 360. Sounded good but there's much stuff to carry to a gig. Bought a P bass instead.
I get it, I have a tnt 130 from 85 and it is heavy as hell but half the size of a 360. I use mine for recording but I also haven’t gigged in years. But… now days bass amps are super small and lite. You could have 2 amps that weigh less than the tnt or just run directly to the pa. But, most of that is totally unnecessary, especially if your playing in a cover band. A P bass is a solid choice and you can make them sound great easily.
@REXYLAB Well, even if it's" just a cover band," I still care about sounding good. At least I get the opportunity to play live and interact w other musicians. Not that's there's anything wrong w just recording at home, I wish I could sometimes. I was in an original band when I mentioned that rig, btw. Since then, I've amassed a pretty damn good arsenal of bass gear for live and recording. I buy what I need and have no need to impress anybody w expensive boutique gear. It's interesting to hear from people with a " just a coverband" attitude. It's hard work and not for everybody but not something to look down on. Of course, the current " tribute band" craze that's going on right now is a little annoying, but that's just me. I still appreciate any entertainer who can get up in front of people and play, whether it's covers or originals. It's still talent and performing.
@@franktreppiedi2208 hold up, I never implied any kind of “just a cover band” attitude. I did the cover band thing too. However, I wouldn’t bring my things that are unnecessary or worse yet wouldn’t fit the sound of the songs just because. A P bass is a very solid choice for any situation and most music. The subtle nuances of Rick-O-Sound I personally feel would be lost on most people going through a PA in mono to a crowd of drunk people trying to get laid. Plus, I have known way too many people that have had their guitar or bass stolen during a break. Currently I have a client that only plays squires he has me install Duncans in and set up. And almost all his basses are P basses. This is because a Squire is a fine instrument and he wants it to sound and play good but not be heartbroken if it gets damaged. Don’t think for a minute I dislike or don’t respect cover musicians. You can’t make any mistakes because everyone knows what the song is supposed to sound like. That’s harder than playing original music nobody has ever heard because they have no idea if you do make a mistake.
great video!! i just got a 2nd hand ric 4003 today and its amazing, plays really well. though i was kinda suprised how the neck pickup alone sounds, its really low in volume an thin, kinda like phasey, the bridge pickup sounds massive with the tone knob pushed, if i pull out the tone knob the bridge pickup gets thinner as well, kinda downwards toward the neck pickup more closely. from what i have heard in your video, thats a normal behaviour right? with rick o sound i can really push the neck pickup with more volume in the 2nd amp and match it with the brutal bridge pickup. i will need to get rid of the bridge pickup thing thats on top of it as well, i will do that soon when i replace the strings next time cheers
Something else I don’t think I mentioned is that these pickups are decoupled. That means if you have them going standard to one amp, switch in the middle, both volumes cranked then the pickups are in parallel. But… if you back off the volume of one they are no longer in parallel and you will notice a boost. Plus you can adjust your tones separately for each pickup while both are in in standard. Coupled pickups don’t work like that. Give it a try. Also, this Saturday I have a video coming out in the Peavey T-40. Super cool bass that does similar, but different things than a Rick. I will be doing a video soon where I make a bass that combines what they both do into one super awesome bass! Stay tuned…

Good eye! Those are cabinets made by 440 live with eminence legend 15s in them. I got a horrible cabinet with a new set of speakers (the eminence) so I yanked them and found 440 live and custom ordered the smallest cabs they made with lots of custom options. That rig sounds really cool and extremely tight for having 15s.
@@REXYLAB Yeah, thought so. I really like the sound of the Orange 15" cabs, but they're much bigger and heavier and also quite expensive. The small footprint of your rig looks quite nice.
@@bones2532 they even put a recessed handle on the top of each cab for easy portability. I’m kind of sad that I don’t need anymore custom cabs because they have a huge selection and the quality is top notch.
One of my 4003's has a problematic pick up selector switch. Sometimes I lose the bridge pick up whether the switch is in the middle or set to bridge pick up. Can you do a video on cleaning/ repairing or replacing this switch? Any thoughts?
That is a great idea! I won’t get to it quickly as I have subjects stacked for a while from other people asking similar things but it is a common problem so I will do such a video. Here are a few possibilities while you wait. 1. The switch could have a bent contact and be loosing contact. This is easy enough to fix as you look to see how the switch breaks contact and then bend it back into place. Be sure you understand the hat you’re looking at before attempting this. 2. There is a solder joint that has come loose somewhere. Could be the switch, Jack, pickup, somewhere in the middle electronics. That can get frustrating to search for. 3. Something is loose and wiggles around intermittently touching something metal and grounding out. This isn’t likely but can happen. 4. The switch is dirty and needs some deoxit. This is what I would hope it is. In all likelihood it is either #1 or #4. There are even more possibilities but those are the most likely. How handy are you with a soldering iron or just working on your bass in general?
@@REXYLAB Thanks...I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, but am a bit hesitant diving into a $2k, bass...lol I was originally told the problem with the mono input switching jack and ordered the repair part, after seeing your video I pulled the serial number plate off and checked it with a 1/4 inch cable it was working as it should as shown in your video. That's when I noticed that I brushed the pick up selector switch I list the bridge pick up. A little jiggling further showed that the selector switch was the problem. I'll wait for your next video in how to repair that issue.

i got 4003 from year 2013. Gotta say few negatives. Prize first. I do get that the name is iconic but it is over prized about 1000€. Why you ask? Because first of all, when a instrument leaves from factory, it should be a worth of that prize. Bass i have first the bridge was changed. It is cool lookin but piece of shit really. Next operation was sanding of 7 frets. Some of those was WAY too high. Third was sanding all that varnish out of neck and using oil insted . Some Einstein though dipping in it 100 times in varnish is a good idea. I do love Rick. Sound and looks are kick ass but SO many minor fails during building makes it around 1200 € prize instrument..MAX. Love your shirt btw. motörhead for life /
Dude you can be as negative as you want. They certainly aren’t perfect. It took me about 25 years of looking for a 4003 I liked before I found mine. Sometimes you just overpay because you can’t help yourself. That is totally the case with this Rick. I knew I was overpaying even though I was getting a very fair deal. I just liked it so much I didn’t care. I’m glad I did too because I really love the thing. I also got to really dig into the electronics and apply it to other stuff. I’m going to do kind of a Rick/T40 thing on a Ibanez SR300 just to show what it does. I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll probably do it in a 3 or 4 part series to show the evolution of the thing. Thanks for the compliment. The fast answer to that is no, you can use a regular instrument cable in the jack marked standard. It will work pretty much as you would expect. But if you want to send each pickup to a different amp that will require a trs to Something. My suggestion would be trs to 2 ts. That is a very effective way to open up the possibilities of this very versatile instrument. I have some custom wiring thing’s coming up where I take this concept and push it on a few different instruments. If you’re interested I highly recommend you check them out.
It better be for how much they cost! Just kidding, but seriously I pretty much love them all from silvertone to ibanez Jem and everything in between. The only thing I Golding like are the crappy counterfeits coming out of China. Those need to be killed with fire!

I have had one for 20 years never adjusted the trust rods and it’s perfect but I don’t like you hanging them up weight down but I have to say I get the rico sound far better than you with a Geddy lee pedal and Fender jazz going through an Ampeg amp so what’s new? Tics are just a fashion statement both Chris and Geddy used Fenders with there own tweaks and there fingers to get there sound but good show like the T shirt!
You say tomato I say tomoto, you say potato I say pototo. All kidding aside, this is about Rick-o-sound and the dual truss rod. Mispronunciations aside as well, how do you feel I did explaining those two things?
That is NOT how hairpin truss rods work from the official Ric manual: On instruments produced before September 1, 1984, first loosen the truss rod nuts, then move the neck manually to the desired position and snug the rod up to hold that position. Do not rely on the rod itself to provide the bowing force. This advice actually applies to all guitar truss rod systems. Adjust- ments other than these can seri- ously damage your instrument.
These are NOT hairpins. They are truss rods and as I clearly state in the video I take tension off before adjusting. This comment sounds like a challenge or the beginning of an argument. If not then that’s fine but be warned, I don’t put up with trolls.
I can see some instances to use it in mono but the stereo option is definitely awesome and gives lots of options. I have a few things coming up where I created my own version of stereo wiring using a single stereo jack and a push pull. One is a guitar and it is insanely versatile. I hope you enjoy it.
You're messing with something you don't know, you can't set up a Rickenbacker trussrod just like you would on Fender, you're just throwing wrong info that could lead to fucked up Rickenbacker's instruments. And i don't mean this to be rude.
I didn’t do this like a fender at all and I know this thing like the back of my hand. This is 100% correct information and not only safe for all Ricks but the safest way to adjust any trussrod and even the old Rick dual harpin. You don’t sound rude, you sound like someone trying to sound smart when you are the one who doesn’t know.
@@REXYLAB From what i know, (and i do have a Rickenbacker), these trussrods neck must be loosen, then the neck is bent in the correct position and locked by tightening the trussrod. That's why i never messed with mine, because i know i can't do it. Maybe i missed the part in wich you were doing it ? Apologies, if you got offended.

I mean, I’ve seen guys complaining about flat frets… While it’s what make them sound the way they do. The way I’ve seen you set it up didn’t match what I’ve been told. That explains my comment, but doesn’t justify the insulting way I made it. Sincere apologies.
@@AstralSelfService I accept your apology. I too have on occasion had a few too many and said something I regretted later. It happens to us all at some point (alcohol or not) and I would not be a very understanding person if I didn’t accept your apology. Consider it water under the bridge. You are welcome on my channel and I make these videos for everyone but specifically for people who don’t know how to do something and want to learn. So again, I accept your apology and appreciate it as well. Now that we have that cleared up, the way that you describe adjusting a Rick is is a very outdated way to adjust the old style of Rick with the dual hairpin. They have not installed the dual hairpin since the very early 80s. However the issue was adjusting them with string tension being on the neck, it always has been. Add modern round wound strings and it was time to update the design. Modern Ricks do not have this problem because they have a dual truss rod system. This eliminates the need to be so cautious. Not only that but the Rick dual truss rod is easily replaceable. You can just unscrew it at both ends and it pulls right out. They did this specifically because of people incorrectly adjusting the old dual hairpins under string tension and breaking them. They actually changed the name from the 4001 to the 4003 because of the switch from dual hairpins to dual truss rods. There are some 4001s out there with dual truss rods but they wanted everyone to know if they had truss rods or hairpins so the name was changed. (The 4002 is a unique beast and rare. If you ever get the chance to buy one for a reasonable price they are a great investment as they only go up in value). Because of the number of truss rods I have had to dig out I came up with this extremely safe method of tensioning the truss rod carefully with no string tension on it into a back bow then stringing it to pitch and gently relaxing it he truss rod, or in the case of the Rick, truss rods until it was at the desired level of straightness. This is also safe for the dual hairpin. I have done it many times. Also, a neck can be straight if you want it to be and your playing style will allow it. Relief at the 12th fret is for people who play more aggressively, I prefer straight as an arrow because I have a very light and precise touch. Recently Rickenbacker has an all new design with a single truss rod. I have not had the opportunity to look at one of those yet but my method as to not damage the truss rod or hairpin will remain how I adjust truss rods as it is the way I adjust all truss rods. The truss rod is nothing to be feared if it is understood. It is also something not to be played with if one is unsure of their ability. As far as I am concerned we are good now. And thank you for apologizing. It takes a big person to do such a thing, especially in this day and age. I respect that about you and hope you come back and watch my channel any time you wish. As far as being a small channel I believe there are a few reasons. First and foremost there is just so much stuff on RUclips that it is hard for people to know your channel even exists. But nice people like you commenting helps the algorithm feel I must have content worthy of promoting. Also, that little bell doesn’t get clicked very much and you can be subscribed but not get notified if the notification bell isn’t clicked. Weird system but that’s the way it works. I’m happy to just work hard and earn the attention my channel gets one subscriber at a time.
Lastly, I wasn’t consistent enough with how often I put out videos. In 2023 I put my money where my mouth is and took a pay cut to have the time to do it right. So now I put out a new video every Saturday. Also, I have things I am very excited about in the works that I believe will help grow my channel much quicker. I hope I’m right but only time will tell.

@@REXYLAB I bought the Wal brand new in 1985 for £700 and received £350 for a trade in on my 4001 (an early 70's model). Believe it or not the Wal preamp was astounding and the tone was gorgeous but I just couldn't get on with the ergonomics and weight (12lbs!) I eventually swapped it for a Jaydee Supernatural. Nowadays I mostly play an Enfield Lionheart which is very similar to Wal but with improved ergonomics (in my opinion). If you want to see/hear it I've got some Rush bass covers on my own (very) humble channel.

I knew that, i had a 1971 4001, used Stereo out with a Y double cable at the end, one went into my Sunn Colesium for Lows and the other to a 100 watt Marshall Plexi I learned this from Chris Squire
Isn’t it crazy that Chris Squirer’s Rick was an RM that was originally mono? If memory serves he got the 3rd or 4th one imported to England and was lucky to get it (the reason for the RM instead of the S designation after the 4001 was for Rose Morris, the importer of Rickenbacker to the UK).
I really love Yes and Chris Squire’s bass is so super unique. He took it a step further than I did in the demo by only putting certain effects on one pickup or the other… brilliant!
It’s no secret that Geddy Lee got a Rick because he was chasing Chris Squire’s tone. Therefore I find it perplexing that when he played with Yes instead of dusting off one of his many Rickenbackers he played a jazz bass?
Especially considering they probably would have moved heaven and earth to get Squire’s rig to the rock and roll hall of fame for Geddy to use that one and only time. What a missed opportunity!
It doesn’t matter though because they still killed it and I can’t think of anyone better to fill Chris’s shoes than Geddy for that event, his bass tone was amazing!
Side note, Rick Wakeman can still rock the fuck out of any cape on planet earth!

I like my 4001 set up like you. Neck pickup clean and bridge with a bit of overdrive to dirty it up. I don't roll the tone off the neck, I want a bit if clang to come through.

I dream of owning a Ric someday. I think I'm going to save up for a 4001 though. I know the 4003 improved on the 4001 in certain ways, but I hear the 4001 has a thinner neck. That's important to me.

I don’t think you would regret that decision.
One of my basses is set up in a similar way with each pickup going to individual outputs, which I then run into two inputs on my helix which then allows me to switch pickups and blend them to taste inside of the helix. My presets change effects and pickups.
That sounds awesome! Does it switch between the amps or do you have some wild 13 pin thing that actually switches pickups on the guitar? Please elaborate.
I’m currently working on a pretty crazy idea combining Rick-O-Sound with the extremely unique wiring of the Peavey T-40.
I figure I need to decide on what I want to enhance that tone. I’m thinking it will probably be more of a studio instrument.

@@REXYLAB each pickup goes directly to a mono 1/4" output, I then run 2 cables into the left and right input on my Line6 HX Effects. In the HX I can run a signal chain for each pickup, and then apply effect and change the levels of each of the signals before it is combined in to single output. There are no volume or tone controls on the bass, this is all handled in the pedal (I use an expression pedal to control volume and other effects. I switch tones quite a bit and so having it linked to presets on the pedal made it easy. I can even change presets using midi when using a computer for playback in live shows.
when using it in the studio I will sometimes just record both pickups separately and then decide what to use later

When I do my fancy Rick/T-40 hybrid I will be corresponding the only problem I think the T-40 electronics have.
I have a Ric 4003. It's SIGNIFICANTLY different than any other bass I own. The tone is "clanky" and percussive. I have some amps that really like it, and it's become a favorite instrument in the arsenal. I have a few other basses that are at the complete opposite end of the spectrum... and I like those too for certain things. If you are a Ric player, then you know.... if you don't know, you don't know.
My Ric-O-Sound rig is a pair of Kustom 200's each with their own 3x15" cab. It kicks more ass than Chuck Norris.
That sounds pretty bad ass! And yeah, we f you know you know and if you don’t know you don’t know!
I’m currently working on a bass that will have electronics like if a 4003 and a T-40 had a baby that went to Michigan on a wrestling scholarship.

I'm surprised they went this route for the Ric-O-Sound stereo function. I always think of my keyboards that I've used over the years that had two output jacks. Left/mono or if you plugged a cable into the right output as well the totoal output between the two jacks was stereo. So what would happed if you plugged a stereo cable out of the Ric-O-sound jack and another out of thre normal jack? Would you actually now have 3 sound sources? stereo bridge/neck and mono both.
That’s a fair question. You would probably just get mono because the mono switching jack would be engaged.

Great video! Would be nice to see your set up coming off the TRS cable and into the amps. Some sort of a splitter box I assume?
Good suggestion! I guess I didn’t explain it quite well enough so I’ll elaborate here.
The TRS tip comes out to 2 TS cables. Basically, one cable is tip and ground and the other is ring and ground. It’s a stereo cable with 3 tips. One stereo tip (TRS) and two mono tips (TS).
I just plug the TRS end into the Rick-o-sound output of the bass. Then one TS directly into one amp and the other into another amp.
That’s it! You don’t need any fancy splitters or anything if you don’t want them.
Now you could run them into 2 different pedal boards and have say a distorted delay on the bridge and a big chorus on the neck.
That would actually be pretty bitchin’.
I did work out a way to do this with one output on the instrument. It will be demonstrated on an Ibanez SZ with some pretty versatile pickups. This is actually a prototype design I created for The Squishy Guitar Project,a nonprofit organization that gives guitars to children with rare and terminal diseases. I've made a splitter cable for my 4003 using a simple microphone cable with TRS Plug that goes to the stereo (Rick'o'Sound) jack of the bass and a male XLR on the other side, so you have just one cable from your bass to your pedalbiard/amps.
Then I have a short adapter cable with female XLR where two separate thin mono instrument cables are routed to two 1/4" mono plugs for the Individual amps/channels. Simple Solution that works perfectly for me.

That is possible and it has been done. My biggest recommendation would be to take it easy on the speaker or get a bass speaker so those low frequencies don’t rumble the thing apart. Distortion (the bad kind from pushing something too hard) blows more speakers than most anything else.

I had a 1980. Put the highs thru a Peavey TNT and the lows thru an Acoustic 360. Sounded good but there's much stuff to carry to a gig. Bought a P bass instead.
I get it, I have a tnt 130 from 85 and it is heavy as hell but half the size of a 360.
I use mine for recording but I also haven’t gigged in years.
But… now days bass amps are super small and lite. You could have 2 amps that weigh less than the tnt or just run directly to the pa.
But, most of that is totally unnecessary, especially if your playing in a cover band. A P bass is a solid choice and you can make them sound great easily.
@REXYLAB Well, even if it's" just a cover band," I still care about sounding good. At least I get the opportunity to play live and interact w other musicians. Not that's there's anything wrong w just recording at home, I wish I could sometimes. I was in an original band when I mentioned that rig, btw. Since then, I've amassed a pretty damn good arsenal of bass gear for live and recording. I buy what I need and have no need to impress anybody w expensive boutique gear. It's interesting to hear from people with a " just a coverband" attitude. It's hard work and not for everybody but not something to look down on. Of course, the current " tribute band" craze that's going on right now is a little annoying, but that's just me. I still appreciate any entertainer who can get up in front of people and play, whether it's covers or originals. It's still talent and performing.
@@franktreppiedi2208 hold up, I never implied any kind of “just a cover band” attitude. I did the cover band thing too.
However, I wouldn’t bring my things that are unnecessary or worse yet wouldn’t fit the sound of the songs just because.
A P bass is a very solid choice for any situation and most music.
The subtle nuances of Rick-O-Sound I personally feel would be lost on most people going through a PA in mono to a crowd of drunk people trying to get laid. Plus, I have known way too many people that have had their guitar or bass stolen during a break.
Currently I have a client that only plays squires he has me install Duncans in and set up. And almost all his basses are P basses. This is because a Squire is a fine instrument and he wants it to sound and play good but not be heartbroken if it gets damaged.
Don’t think for a minute I dislike or don’t respect cover musicians. You can’t make any mistakes because everyone knows what the song is supposed to sound like. That’s harder than playing original music nobody has ever heard because they have no idea if you do make a mistake.
great video!! i just got a 2nd hand ric 4003 today and its amazing, plays really well.
though i was kinda suprised how the neck pickup alone sounds, its really low in volume an thin, kinda like phasey, the bridge pickup sounds massive with the tone knob pushed, if i pull out the tone knob the bridge pickup gets thinner as well, kinda downwards toward the neck pickup more closely. from what i have heard in your video, thats a normal behaviour right?
with rick o sound i can really push the neck pickup with more volume in the 2nd amp and match it with the brutal bridge pickup.
i will need to get rid of the bridge pickup thing thats on top of it as well, i will do that soon when i replace the strings next time

Something else I don’t think I mentioned is that these pickups are decoupled. That means if you have them going standard to one amp, switch in the middle, both volumes cranked then the pickups are in parallel.
But… if you back off the volume of one they are no longer in parallel and you will notice a boost. Plus you can adjust your tones separately for each pickup while both are in in standard.
Coupled pickups don’t work like that. Give it a try.
Also, this Saturday I have a video coming out in the Peavey T-40. Super cool bass that does similar, but different things than a Rick.

Those are cabinets made by 440 live with eminence legend 15s in them.
I got a horrible cabinet with a new set of speakers (the eminence) so I yanked them and found 440 live and custom ordered the smallest cabs they made with lots of custom options.
That rig sounds really cool and extremely tight for having 15s.
@@REXYLAB Yeah, thought so. I really like the sound of the Orange 15" cabs, but they're much bigger and heavier and also quite expensive. The small footprint of your rig looks quite nice.

When playing live, if you're using two amps for the Ric-0-Sound, do you send both amps to the FOH and let them sort it out?

One of my 4003's has a problematic pick up selector switch.
Sometimes I lose the bridge pick up whether the switch is in the middle or set to bridge pick up. Can you do a video on cleaning/ repairing or replacing this switch?

That is a great idea!
I won’t get to it quickly as I have subjects stacked for a while from other people asking similar things but it is a common problem so I will do such a video.
Here are a few possibilities while you wait.
1. The switch could have a bent contact and be loosing contact. This is easy enough to fix as you look to see how the switch breaks contact and then bend it back into place. Be sure you understand the hat you’re looking at before attempting this.
2. There is a solder joint that has come loose somewhere. Could be the switch, Jack, pickup, somewhere in the middle electronics. That can get frustrating to search for.
3. Something is loose and wiggles around intermittently touching something metal and grounding out. This isn’t likely but can happen.
4. The switch is dirty and needs some deoxit. This is what I would hope it is.
In all likelihood it is either #1 or #4. There are even more possibilities but those are the most likely.
How handy are you with a soldering iron or just working on your bass in general?

I was originally told the problem with the mono input switching jack and ordered the repair part, after seeing your video I pulled the serial number plate off and checked it with a 1/4 inch cable it was working as it should as shown in your video. That's when I noticed that I brushed the pick up selector switch I list the bridge pick up. A little jiggling further showed that the selector switch was the problem. I'll wait for your next video in how to repair that issue.

That is probably a question many people want to know. The answer is only one pickup will work.
i got 4003 from year 2013. Gotta say few negatives. Prize first. I do get that the name is iconic but it is over prized about 1000€. Why you ask? Because first of all, when a instrument leaves from factory, it should be a worth of that prize. Bass i have first the bridge was changed. It is cool lookin but piece of shit really. Next operation was sanding of 7 frets. Some of those was WAY too high. Third was sanding all that varnish out of neck and using oil insted . Some Einstein though dipping in it 100 times in varnish is a good idea.
I do love Rick. Sound and looks are kick ass but SO many minor fails during building makes it around 1200 € prize instrument..MAX. Love your shirt btw. motörhead for life

It took me about 25 years of looking for a 4003 I liked before I found mine. Sometimes you just overpay because you can’t help yourself.
That is totally the case with this Rick. I knew I was overpaying even though I was getting a very fair deal. I just liked it so much I didn’t care.
I’m glad I did too because I really love the thing. I also got to really dig into the electronics and apply it to other stuff.
I’m going to do kind of a Rick/T40 thing on a Ibanez SR300 just to show what it does.
I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll probably do it in a 3 or 4 part series to show the evolution of the thing.

The fast answer to that is no, you can use a regular instrument cable in the jack marked standard. It will work pretty much as you would expect.

Something. My suggestion would be trs to 2 ts.
That is a very effective way to open up the possibilities of this very versatile instrument.
I have some custom wiring thing’s coming up where I take this concept and push it on a few different instruments. If you’re interested I highly recommend you check them out.
You will find the 4001C64 is its own different animal.

I have had one for 20 years never adjusted the trust rods and it’s perfect but I don’t like you hanging them up weight down but I have to say I get the rico sound far better than you with a Geddy lee pedal and Fender jazz going through an Ampeg amp so what’s new? Tics are just a fashion statement both Chris and Geddy used Fenders with there own tweaks and there fingers to get there sound but good show like the T shirt!

These are NOT hairpins.
They are truss rods and as I clearly state in the video I take tension off before adjusting.

I can see some instances to use it in mono but the stereo option is definitely awesome and gives lots of options.

You're messing with something you don't know, you can't set up a Rickenbacker trussrod just like you would on Fender, you're just throwing wrong info that could lead to fucked up Rickenbacker's instruments. And i don't mean this to be rude.
I didn’t do this like a fender at all and I know this thing like the back of my hand. This is 100% correct information and not only safe for all Ricks but the safest way to adjust any trussrod and even the old Rick dual harpin.

@@REXYLAB From what i know, (and i do have a Rickenbacker), these trussrods neck must be loosen, then the neck is bent in the correct position and locked by tightening the trussrod. That's why i never messed with mine, because i know i can't do it.

I’ve simply been told many times that Rickenbackers are different beast and way more finicky with trussrod adjustment.

Now that we have that cleared up, the way that you describe adjusting a Rick is is a very outdated way to adjust the old style of Rick with the dual hairpin. They have not installed the dual
hairpin since the very early 80s.
However the issue was adjusting them with string tension being on the neck, it always has been. Add modern round wound strings and it was time to update the design. Modern Ricks do not have this problem because they have a dual truss rod system. This eliminates the need to be so cautious. Not only that but the Rick dual truss rod is easily replaceable. You can just unscrew it at both ends and it pulls right out. They did this specifically because of people incorrectly adjusting the old dual hairpins under string tension and breaking them.
They actually changed the name from the 4001 to the 4003 because of the switch from dual hairpins to dual truss rods. There are some 4001s out there with dual truss rods but they wanted everyone to know if they had truss rods or hairpins so the name was changed. (The 4002 is a unique beast and rare. If you ever get the chance to buy one for a reasonable price they are a great investment as they only go up in value).
Because of the number of truss rods I have had to dig out I came up with this extremely safe method of tensioning the truss rod carefully with no string tension on it into a back bow then stringing it to pitch and gently relaxing it he truss rod, or in the case of the Rick, truss rods until it was at the desired level of straightness. This is also safe for the dual hairpin. I have done it many times.
Also, a neck can be straight if you want it to be and your playing style will allow it. Relief at the 12th fret is for people who play more aggressively, I prefer straight as an arrow because I have a very light and precise touch.
Recently Rickenbacker has an all new design with a single truss rod. I have not had the opportunity to look at one of those yet but my method as to not damage the truss rod or hairpin will remain how I adjust truss rods as it is the way I adjust all truss rods.
The truss rod is nothing to be feared if it is understood. It is also something not to be played with if one is unsure of their ability.
As far as I am concerned we are good now. And thank you for apologizing. It takes a big person to do such a thing, especially in this day and age. I respect that about you and hope you come back and watch my channel any time you wish.

Rickenbacker is nice bass, but now a days with more fingering and tap.. less metalic and distorted sound basses are my preferance..
