Phos starts off as a innocent being who eventually because of circumstances out of their control turns into something else. His experience changes him. And it's those around him who cause it. Boiling the story down to a body horror is absolutely discrediting the creator and honestly a insult.
"Body horror" what? It played with the ship of Theseus theory. If we replaced every part of a gems body with a new one, would it be the same gem? This continues with the fact gems loose there memories with each part gets broken off. If only u did js a little bit more research

@Fireblade bro the anime destroyed me in a way where I cannot explain why or what happened. It leaves you speechless and then turns to you and ask you what your going to do about it. Bro phos I cant-
Personally, I think the story is about loss of self, at least for the main character. Each of the Lustrous have a person identity that is linked to the gem they are. And as Phos goes through the story, we gradually see her lose parts of her original self, slowly being replaced with other gems or metals. With each 'evolution', more of the original Phos is lost until she no longer resembles who she once was. As a consequence, the other gems slowly begin to see her as a danger or threat due to her changing psyche. But also, some people have a tendency to use gems as an example of who they are (birthstones are an example). So, since the moon (where the antagonists are from) does not have gems of its own, thus they take the Lustrous as a way of self expression. So, in conclusion of my perception of the Land of the Lustrous, it is a story about self expression and the loss of self.
