I own one. I got a story. 😆. Drilling down from top plate of garage to run 1" all tread for a hold down. 3' bit. Drill snaged. I spun around the outside of the building and back again. I saved it for the next day.
Wow! I know you were freaking out! 😳 I would have walked away too! That is no joke! Thank you for sharing!
I recall a electrician using one of those back in theater and the plumber telling him to use the bar. Came back with a broken nose. and I nailed myself with one in TK also.
Lol. It is a tough lesson to learn. I always try to be cautious. I’m glad I never used one of these over there. My luck we would have got rocketed while I was drilling holes and I would have been in all kinds of trouble.
I see you are smart enough to run it on high speed. Nothing stops a hole Hawg in low gear, they just wind down throwing you around.. I saw an over confident self professed He-Man co-worker drilling a closet flange hole- thrown thru and break in half the wall stud he braced against. I used a 1/2 blue plastic bodied regular Makita drill on rough ins that would pass for the size of a 3/8 on my truck- for 30 years. It still works! It never hurt me.
So true. I would love to get something different I just don't have the use for it at this point. Maybe if I find a good deal. That is crazy!! So many stories with these drills. I have a couple makita products I use at work that I love. Can you send me a Picture of your drill? If your ok with it. I would like to check it out and maybe do a comparison at some point. ufix247@gmail.com. Thanks for watching and your comments
I was in the trade for 43 years and this tool is all I ever used for drilling small and large holes. I had a 2 9/16" auger bit and never saw anyone with a tool like it. Never got injured because I always the sissy bar. I'll take the Hole Hawg any day.
That is awesome Cliff. Sissy bar is a must. I don't use mine often so I have not upgraded. but they do make a smaller, lighter tools that look amazing.
I bought mine at a pawn shop in excellent condition without the side handle and read about the kickback hazard. Promptly went to a home center and got a piece of galvanized pipe, added a rubber grip on the end. I hold this thing very lightly to anticipate having to get off the trigger. I try to use ship auger bits when possible but I do have the self-feeding bits as well.
Awesome adaptation! I would not use the thing without that bar for leverage ever again! If it did not come with that pipe I would have made one too!
I’ve got 2 stories. One where I’m drilling 4.5” toilet hole through subfloor with cheater bar, one foot against the handle, and one foot against the cheater bar, and it spins me a little bit. The other where I’m drilling three and 9/16 through a joist, no cheater bar, and it pinned my whole arm against the bottom of the subfloor and I had a difficult time releasing the trigger. No injuries. It’s a great tool though.
Oh my gosh! Glad you did not get injured! There is too many scary moments with this tool! That being said it is a great tool. Just have to know that it will hurt you.
Thanks for the tips Brian! I will leave this job for you!
No problem. Thank you for checking it out.
That’s a beast for sure, didn’t know they made one with a clutch that would be great thanks for the video Brian 👍
Thank for watching Britt. When I find one I deal I will be hooking one up.
He talking about the huge Milwaukee right angle hole hawg. They have clutches.
I just bought my new this same one hole hawg today and so I seen it this morning while getting lumber at home Depot for almost 400$ rights so I didn't get it yet I stop by the pawn shop on the way home find a one brand new in the box same Milwaukee hole hawg for only 150 bucks ! I was in shock and awe brother ! So of course I bought it dude what a steal of a deal huh !
Dude that is a steal! Great find. I would have bought it too.
The Milwaukee Big Hawg hole saws are the way to go.
Right on. I have been eyeing them for a while now. If I can grow the channel and expand a bit I would get one to shoot videos on. Everything I work with these days has metal studs.
@@ThatFixItGuy
The big hawg bits won’t do you any good with steel framing, but the new hole dozer hole saws are pretty sweet. To be honest, as a plumber, I preferred the electricians tool, the greenlee hole punch, when it came to steel framing.
That is what we use are the greenlee hole punch tools. I like em.
Get yourself the dewalt it's the most powerful and it's American not Chinese
BEST tool to watch ppl use if they DONT know how or KNOW the way it spins if it binds up lol.. Sissy BAR 100%.. but if not use it right.. know the way it will spin if it binds..
But that side up against the wood, stud, or even your leg.. I have seen so many people with broken bones, concussions, stitches... the worst I seen was a guy get tossed off
the ladder and his ELBOW outside his skin.. YEARS ago i bought the black & decker ORIGINAL hole hog and it was my fav.. had the clutch..
I remember using the super hawg for the first time. I was drilling down into the crawl space and as soon as that bad boy popped through I came with it, only thing that stopped me was the 2x4 that I smacked my face on.
That looks like a wrist breaker lol. Great video
The potential is there. Not my favorite tool but it effective!
Scary!! I’ll leave this job to the pros! Thanks for the vid.
This is a great tool just have to be careful. Leaving this to a pro is a good call.
i got mine for $60 2 days ago, no handle but got a piece of conduit so ill make that work
That is a great deal! That will totally work. Be careful!
Wow those switch blade bits look real nice.
They are awesome! Thank you for watching!
They are great, just make sure to clean out the teeth if you bottom out.
I just found my dads olds hole hawg I’m an electrical apprentice but I never knew Plummer’s used these.
Yeah right on. Be careful with that thing. Tool of the trades I guess.
Zoinks! Looks like that bull would give a real rough ride! I’d be careful of twisted wrists!
Oh yeah. It all happens so fast! I am always so careful. Thank you for watching!
Great demonstration on how the whole hog works I just hope those aren’t exterior walls because you’re not leaving enough meat on your studs.😮
Thank you I'm purchasing another one because my first one was stolen how durable are they are they very reliable
Right on. They have newer styles with clutches in them that are much safer these days. Your thoughts on those?
@@ThatFixItGuy, I just purchased one like this one in the video for $180 tax included so I chose the same one that you have in the video the video if I would have seen your video first I probably would have gotten the one with the clutch. I subscribed to your Channel I just hope that this one will hold up for the Long Haul it's brand new
I use that thing all the time I didn’t even know there was a bar that went on it hah I almost smashed my hand with it a few times, gotten cut by nails and almost hit in the face while on a ladder but I’ve learned to stay out of it way just in case but you just gotta hold on to it tight
Oh man! It always freaked me out using this while being on a ladder. Thanks got sharing!
Yeah I’ve punched a shiner or two from the kick back. I’ve gotten smart and now I look for them and hit sideways with a hammer before I start. I had one go 1/4” into my hand and it was not pleasant
Any prob using 3/8 stem?
No problem at all. Fit up to 1/2”.
I always keepine on Lo
I use HI when I'm mixing cement
Yeah right on. This would be a great drill for mixing cement!
What’s a safer alternative than using these?
A a super hawg with a clutch in it
Gotta love this one, it ll hurt u bad but end of the day u can make some big chunk
It is a real deal work horse that death dealer in one!
I just But this machine from the streets got sold to me for a 150 bucks I did not know what it was your video explained at all
You just bought a work horse! Be careful and it will be a money maker for you!
Got mine for 60 bucks and didnt come with a sissy bar & handle, so i put a 3/4x18 pipe in it.
Thanks for the video.
Wow that is a steal! 3/4 pipe and your on your way. Be careful and go make some money!
I love my 90% drill for tight spots
The only way to roll at times Bro. Thanks for watching!
I have been picked up and slammed into rafters, a hole hog is a beast
Yeah they are total beasts! Still make sure I’m very cautious every time it use it.
I’m literally in the same boat…service plumber now starting to get into new construction…used this drill yesterday and I fucking hate it. Using this drill up on a ladder just seems soooo sketchy to me especially not being used to it…any waayyy safer ones out there? Price does not matter
Totally safer ones out there bro! The Dewalt DWD450 or the Milwaukee super hawg are going to be better options. Or if you can find an old Timberwolf. They have a clutch as well.
I will be getting a DWD450 at some point.
Got smacked in the jaw by one of these badboys while drilling for a 3 stack, got thrown off the ladder didnt even realize what had happened when i opened my eyes, my buddy brian ran up and was like dude holy fuck how does your face feel 🤣
Super hawg is the way to go.
If I ever get a bigger space, I would love to buy one. Hard to justify without a plumbing biz anymore. I may see if I can borrow one. I have used my friends and really liked it.
I just bought me one today from the pawn shop for 175.00 I need that side bar tho
Right on. That is a good deal. A piece of 3/4 galvanized pipe cut to the length you like and a bicycle handle grip and your set up. Want me to let you know how long mine is?
I always say: work smarter, not harder. Using tools that will eventually hurt the operator just isn't worth it. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. I want to be in good shape and not injured when I hit my 80s and 90s.
So true. And I could not agree more. Wish I would have learned this in my teens.
Can't believe it didnt break my wrist
bhahhaha...gonna loose your ears in them sideburns soon bro! Hhahhahah...great vid #stoneyridgefarmer
I know. I think the hair cutters are finally open around here again.
Happy birthday!
Thank you!
I've done plumbing and heating for years with my father he broke that out one day to drill three inch holes in floor joist has to run a plumbing line that God damn tool pick me right up off my feet and slam me into the floor above after that I'll never touch it again but then I just bought one yesterday, LOL to drill a 4-in hole in a tree I'm going to have to get 75 friends to hold it from spinning
Yeah bro these are totally scary.. I'm cautious everytime I use it.
@@ThatFixItGuy I actually bought a 6-inch earth auger I'm going to use it to drill holes for my 4 x 4 posts
I own two of those pigs. I had my hand pinned between the trigger handle and a wall stud, I've also sprained my wrist, been hit in the head, and lots of close calls where I've let go of the pig before getting caught up in it.
I would use one of those all day long every day for years when I was building new residential homes. My other journeyman and I would trade off every other day, one nailing boxes and the other following drilling holes, two story five bedroom five bathroom kitchen living dining family game rooms and three car garage. Two of us and 45 houses. We would have a house finished from rough to trim in four days, five if the drywallers fucked us and rocked one side of every wall so they didn't have to cut every switch and outlet hole. Only one problem on the 43rd house. There was a light above the wet bar that didn't work. We knew our shit and we never rang out any circuits before they closed the walls. We already moved to the next house. But we knew it wasn't something we did so we had to cut the ceiling open to access the Romex and sure enough, the plumbers cut the wire after we installed it, as they were running pipes for upstairs.
We both got $10k bonus after we finished that tract of homes from the owner of the developer because we were always ahead of schedule and we came in under budget on every house. The funny thing was my partner and I were smoking weed every day all day from before work during work and after work. The General Foreman would buy a 12 pack of beer every day and we'd drink a couple beers and smoke a big fatty of NorCal skunk buds. Making pretty good money for those days 1995 -96 $25 per hour I hadn't gone union yet. The following year became a union commercial industrial journeyman and jumped to $32.50 hour at 32 yrs old single no kids no ex wife that ended up at $55 per hour about four years later. Still single no kids but lots of toys for grown up boys lol
Wow! That is quite a lot of houses. Thank you for sharing this. You have come quite a long way as a tradesman. I love these kind of stories.
@@ThatFixItGuy ---- thanks. I appreciate your reply. I have around 30 yrs as an electrician now. My own contracting business for going on ten years. I did the Union thing in Silicon Valley and San Francisco as a journeyman for 16 years then moved back home to LA got my C10 license and now I'm one of the main contractors for all the major film and tv studios and production companies doing electrical on location for movies and tv shows. I still do service work in between shows. I've worked hard and learned from the best and it pays off if you love what you do and do good work.
Awesome read man, hope your having fun and enjoying life!
They don’t call it a jaw breaker for nothing
So true! goes by many names
This is why I throw that away and got the new Milwaukee hole hawk
That is a good call. I will one of these days. Thanks for watching.
Dont throw it away let me keep it!
You would want one of these? They make a lot safer ones these days.
@@ThatFixItGuy its definitely worth it
I'll never buy that tool. I don't want a broken wrist. Thanks 😂
I totally get it! If I still had my company I would have replaced it with a different style long ago.
I think I will go for DeWalt haha.
I think that either the Dewalt or the Milwaukee with a clutch is the way to go. Much safer in my opinion.
@@ThatFixItGuy That is for sure. I saw some people didn't handle it correctly. Consequently, they injured themselves.
Yeah unfortunately there are too many horror stories out there about this drill. Better to warn people. Maybe this video saves a couple backs or broken arms.
@@ThatFixItGuy Agree. My Dewalt FlexVolt Advantage Drill doesn't have clutch, but it has overload protection. It helps too with the correct way to handle it.
Yep for sure! Thanks for watching and your comments!
Ultimate wrist breaker . Only worst tool I’ve ever seen is using a old core drill by hand ,
Oh man I could not even imagine core drilling by hand! 😬
I braced one backwards once, on a 6 foot ladder. She fetched up and I woke up on the plywood floor. FYI, a piece of any 3/4 pipe will serve as a “pussy bar”. I had a job where I had to drill a 4” self feed bit through a 6” laminate beam in every unit. I used a 2’ long piece of black pipe for a brace.
Wow bro! That is crazy! Good call on making your own sissy bar! More stability the better! Thanks for sharing! Have you upgraded since that time?
@@ThatFixItGuy
Hell yeah, I haven’t touched a widow maker (old school hole hawg) in years. I use the 18v super hawg. That clutch gives some piece of mind. Plus I use the Milwaukee big hawg bits, like a hole saw, but with only 3 teeth, plus, they use a small spade bit for the pilot, and the cores just fall out. I’m a plumber, and if I have to, I can drill out a whole house with my 18v fuel drill/hammer drill. Only drawback, they don’t do nails. Another advantage is the switch blade self feed bits. You just back out the pilot set screw, remove the pilot and the main blade of the bit is replaceable. To be honest, I can’t remember the last time I got out my extension cords.
Lol! The widow maker is such a great name for that tool! I use the switch blades mainly. I will look up the big hawg bits. I think a have seen them before. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely can't stand putting pipe in walls
Yeah it can be very annoying at times. There are too many variables especially in a remodel.
I've seen a broken wrist and lost teeth! Go get a Dewalt or the Makita with a clutch. Please!
I just bought one for $25
Dude! That was a amazing deal! Stay safe!
That's what we be calling my ex wife the hole hawg lol 😂
I love that you have plumbing nicknames! What did she call you?
