  • Drummers, stop playing DNB so fast: Understanding DNB tempos and linear patterns.
I get questions about DNB, jungle, and linear patterns every day, and here's an edit from my Twitch livestream discussing it a little bit.
I learned many DNB patterns from DJ Dieselboy's compilation CDS and he sped up the record player to 180 or 190 BPM and that was how I learned DNB. It wasn't until much later that I realized 'drumming DNB' needed to be slower to match the average groove and style of DNB.
Now if you don't care and just wanna play fast, that is totally fine, and go for it. But this is a video with my understanding of DNB. This is only my opinion, so take or leave it. But, I've studied DNB since about 1999 and am still learning today. For those asking, I have ZERO drummer influences within DNB and Jungle. I only listened to the records that producers were making. And they sped up old jazz and funk records and of course programmed the individual kicks and snares, creating unique high-speed grooves now known as DNB and jungle. I also, talk about linear patterns and the difference between 174 bpm and 87 bpm.
    Drum Lesson on Jungle Beats
A rock beat moving into Drum and Bass / Jungle: Speed up and focus on specific accents (3). E's and A's are the biggest action items here when it comes to creating the proper groove of the breakbeat/drum and bass/jungle style.
Start slow, then work your way up. 100bpm, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, etc. I would encourage you to settle in on about 170 or 174 bpm. Playing jungle at 180 or faster turns into something different.
Let me know our thoughts and how you get on with this beat!

You make drum and bass sound so good. You are a real musician! Thanks for the salute to Roach and Piert. I was so depressed when Neil died. Got my “fix” when I discovered the new legend of drumming…Mr. KJ Sawka!! Thank you for teaching and sharing your talents with us.

Always good to get into the weeds about the technical aspects of music and genres! Linear drumming is how I learned how to structure my drums when I first started producing and it helps you understand the flow of the drums so much better before you start adding extra details and combination hits.

Linear is great for reserving some energy, but man those relentless 1/8th notes just hit different - good different 🤘

This makes no sense, BPM surely doesn't change time signature.

which part doesn't make sense? Correct - bpm doesn't change time sig. bpm is the tempo and time signature is how many beats per bar
