The Dikler, my hero of the 70's! His jumping was second to none & had so many high placings in Gold Cup & Grand National having to lug around huge weights bless him! Happy memories! Xx

@@johnlivesey7892 Cheers for your reply John , I have heard of Derek Ancil and Nevel Crump ' was Derek second in the 1961 National. Nerves of steel in those days sir.May I ask which part of the state's you are living now. Kind regards Glynn 🤝
@@charliebear1436 Quite agree with you sir, I followed Wayward Lad a lot but looking back he did not come up the Cheltenham hill to well and probably did not get the trip and was ok over 3 miles. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
@@glynnevans1851 Wayward Lad broke the track record when he was beaten by Dawn Run in the Gold Cup and finished ahead of the previous years winner. He stayed and got up the hill but he just kept bumping into horses that stayed a tad better on the day.
@glynnevans1851 absolutely agree. Wayward Lad, great over 3 miles but could never quite last home in a Gold Cup. If he'd stayed he'd have definitely beat Dawn Run in the Gold Cup
@paulrichards6894 Yes the better jockey won it on the better horse. Ron Barry rode a great race he'd only been on the Dikler once. He jumped 3 fences at Saxon house thats all. Im sorry Richard Pitman couldn't ride a finish and the better jockey Ron Barry proved it.
Seen this race a few times. Watching it now, it's only just dawned on me that if Pitman hadn't steadied Pendil at the last fence and instead had pushed him to 'ping it', he might've won. Jockey needed to be braver at the last fence i think.
Pendil was hailed as the "new Arkle" by some at the time. A very good horse but comparisons with Arkle were ill advised. Pendil was a brilliant 3 miler but the Gold Cup distance tested his stamina, although he fell during one renewal. The Cheltenham hill has been the bane of many a good horse.
I believe Pendil came back the following year. Was favourite, got brought down. Trainer Fred Winter blasted jockey Richard Pitman afterwards for deciding to tuck in immediately behind a horse tgat was a poor jumper. That horse fell, brought down Pendil.
Bobby Beasley, riding Captain Christy, deliberately rode upsides Pendil coming down to that fence. It was a legitimate racing tactic, and a gamble. Had High Ken stood up, I'm unsure whether Pendil would have still won, but you never know...

What a fantastic field, The Dickler Pendle, Spanish Steps and Lescargot. I must say, The Dickler was one heck of a battler.
Yes some great horses,

Ron Barry won that race a far better horseman

How unlucky was Richard Pitman. A few weeks later the same thing happened in the Grand National on Crisp
The rider of the Dikler is my grandad guys
The great Ron Barry.marvelous horseman.
Long time no seen.
Lovely to see Charlie Potheen again, also all the other big household names there.
Ron Barry a great jockey , never talked about, never spoken too , forgotten? Why?
that was a long 150 yards

Dick Pitman 2nd in the gold cup and grand national in ‘73

to be pipped on the line twice in the same season in the biggest two races. Dick Pitman at fault?
In my opinion, yes. I think had Fred Winter let Francome take over as his top Jockey sooner, Pendil would have won in '73 &' 74.

@@malcs0 had the same debate a few years ago about Cue Card and Don Cossack. We'll never know. Tied Cottage and Alverton is another one.
Any chance you have the 1990 mildmay fleet challenge Cheltenham festival. New Halen won 66/1
No, not televised by the BBC.
Pitman hit the front far too early on a horse that just about got three miles.
Pendil would have stayed forever .just froze for a hundred yards
for some reason. Would have beat the dikler 9 times out of 10. Great days.
The same fate happen to Richard Pitman at Aintree in the same year
