We all want to hit the golf ball further, and it's not just so we can outdrive the rest of our foursome. Gaining extra power also gives you the option of swinging easier, since you can get the same distance without swinging 100% on every shot.
One of the most surefire ways of gaining distance is to do speed training. This just means devoting some of your training to swinging the club faster.
Speed training can take many forms, but the easiest thing to do is start by making a faster backswing. That might sound crazy, especially if you're one of the many golfers who have been told they are swinging too fast. But the truth is the vast majority of students I meet with take the club back too slow.
When you speed up your backswing, the extra momentum helps keep your club on plane. It's a lot like riding a bicycle... the slower you go the harder it is to keep steady. A faster backswing also helps you take a longer backswing, which will help you generate club head speed and pick up distance.
But it's important to speed up your backswing the correct way... by using the ground to generate speed instead of ripping your hands back as fast as you can.
In today's video I show you several ways to use speed training in your practice, including a very cool wearable device called the DeWiz.

Ironically I have been working on this lately. This is great advice with no gimmicks and best of all it is free. Zach Allen is an elite teacher.

Very few instructors know abut this. I have been playing golf for 20 years and have had multiple coaches. No one ever mentioned the correlation on backswing and distance. It works!

Hey Zach, good to see you back. Long time subscriber and watcher. I am a healthy 67 year old man and play to about a 15 handicap. My drives generally go 220 yards on an flat fairway. 5-iron goes 170. I fractured my right Hip in January 2023 and it has been 15 weeks since. I completed 2 and a half months of Physical Therapy. Fortunately, the Surgeon did NOT have to do a complete Hip Replacement, but instead placed some screws/pins in the fracture. I have gotten a Green light from my Physician to return to physical activity including my golf. I hit balls on the range yesterday and no pain whatsoever. Obviously, I'm not as flexible as before in my golf swing, but I hit balls pretty well. I have completed 2 and a half months of Physical Therapy and I have also been doing stretches for my lower back and Hip. QUESTION: As I prepare for my 1st round of golf this week (May 17, 2023), what words of advice to you have for me?

How does that square with the 3:1 backswing-downswing tempo ratio idealized on the app? Is 3:1 more for the course?

Agree fast works, HOWEVER, instructors (at the top) use many terms to transition - (fall comes to mind) weight moves to the front leg, hips pivot etc - THE QUESTION - the good or bad of HESITATION at the top --- when the body naturally transitions toward the left side, bad or good if there is a momentary stop or hesitation --- or does that cut back on swing speed, thanks

ffs i have the fastest backswing in the world, ( im not joking), my coach tells me its too quick and i yank it inside now this guy is saying to swing back faster, no wonder no one is getting better, so much conflicting advice! by the way i have good speed and hit it nowhere cos it aint coming out the centre of the face,,, thats what counts!!!!!

Make sure it is fast with the big muscles. Because they can’t move that fast. The hands and wrist are much more fast twitch and can definitely move too fast.
