I'm late to the party (as always) and while I consider this a fairly good review, I'd like to add a few things after beating the game myself. First things first, while it's true that you can easily get lost in multiple areas, I believe that the game provides a variety of ways to deal with it. For example, you can use fairly common materials to craft survey banners that will allow you to mark the places you've already visited. You can break destructibles objects (such as plants or books) as you pass, allowing you to easily recognize the paths you've already traveled. Hell, you can even use the "coffin" spell to block the doorways to areas you've finished exploring. The same argument can be used in relation to Lunacid's darkest areas, as the game provides you with a good amount of weapons, items and spells that you can use to illuminate your way.
Calling the twisted staff easy to obtain in early game is something that makes me laugh... It is hidden behind a gate that only opens with light damage, is next to a demon mini-boss, and is hidden behind a wall that you might miss because the giant demon attacking you... not to mention the whole [DEATH APPROACHES] thing that can happen in the same room...
Lunacid does not look like it plays like King's Field. King's Field has a more slow and stragetic combat system unlike Lunacid which is way more akin to Demon's/Dark Souls' more agile and reflex based combat system.
@@fusscoopland9680 Well as someone who played through KF3 and DS1 several times, you'd be wrong. This doesn't play anything like a soulslike. Also, seriously, there is literally no strategy involved in KF combat beyond circle strafe the enemy to death.
I think these are all very fair critics, always weird to me tho because I'm on a whole weird side of liking exploration games much much more when they're mazey and easy to get lost in while having very in the background combat systems like Symphony of the Night, and get very tired of games with straightforward exploration and indepth combat systems like Lamment of Innocence or Dark Souls Of course, all opinions and stuff
I am honestly surprised by the sheer amount of areas in this game. Every major area links to 2 more major areas. Each area has so many hidden weapons and spells. I also love that you don't get locked out of any endings during your playthrough and can get all in 1 save file.
@@ToastUrbath Don't you have to complete ending A first, before being able to continue on to ending E? After doing the prerequisites and going through with ending A once you are technically locked out of repeating it, but you did get it.
Great review, I really enjoyed Lunacid but I have to agree with your criticisms regarding the balance, mazes, etc. On the other hand, I think Lunacid's obscure secrets and puzzles are one of its best features, and making them more intuitive would remove a huge amount of the game's charm. Some of the game's most memorable moments (that white VHS thing was crazy) were special because I felt rewarded for engaging with the game thoughtfully, or picking up on clues. Game content can feel so much more meaningful when it's the result of self-directed experimentation, rather than a guided tour.
Just wanna say, the song you play in the beginning of the video is hands down the best song in the game. Such vibes man, I've sat in the Hidden Archives many times just to listen to this song haha. One tip to makes things harder for yourself is to always use weapons that need to level up. That makes the areas harder & more engaging and it lasted me a full playthrough (though I did play the beta beforehand so you might have a other experience).
I played through lunacid before release, gonna play it again soon since it fully came out. The thing that I thought needed the most change is definitely the balance. The game basically ends once you get the staff, which is a huge shame, because the game has a huge amount of very cool weapons and spells that i wanted to use, but other weapons simply greatly overshadow them. But the vibe of the game is so strong that it didn't take away from the enjoyment. I would love to see more games like this.
I feel like if the staff was placed deeper in its zone (I don't want to spoil the location), then perhaps it would feel more rewarding, as that area was quite terrifying in my first playthrough.
Considering the staff is very well hidden, people who used guides and just found a "good" weapon (not even the best weapon in the game) that's on them and not really the game.
First time am here and I must say that this was a really good review but I would just like to voice my own opinion. Lunacid isn't trying to make engaging combat it's main focus. It is trying to be a game filled with mystery that has combat in it and maybe that is just me but scounting out a enemy's type resistances and weaknesses with a spell or just by fucking around and changing my approach accordingly in the different areas and for the different enemies and also still overpowering them but I could be biased since I made myself underpowered by going into 100 res since someone told me it gives passive mana regen which while making the game harder was still fun to me and allowed for some really cool synergies like being able to use a healing spell over and over infinitely to have infinite passive regen. But even if you feel like the game is too easy cuz of it's combat you have the option to at any point in the run to adjust the difficulty of the enemies via a slider in the more options menu I started a challenge run this day with max difficulty just cuz I wanted to see how different it is and because I couldn't get enough of the game but it truly shines with the pure dopamine rush you get every time you discover a secret wall with a cool spell in it or a other kind of secret leading to a op sword or some... well that white vhs thing was crazy :P
The only bad thing about this game is that it is too short. But yeah, the game can e cheesed out too easily. Dexterity was my lowest stat, then I found the Jailer's Candle and it became my second biggest stat, losing only to intelligence. It's a shame, spells are already overpowered enough, then we find swords that throw projectiles, then elemental projectiles that cost nothing... I think the game didn't expect us to find many of those itens, but as you said, if we find just one or two we already break the game. The game is greatest at the beginning, where we have tension and fewer options against the enemies. I don't think the game had that many complex mazes, while I didn't memorize the path I could always find where I wanted to go, once I knew that place existed. The environments in this game are not that big, and I'm glad they did them maze like, otherwise they being small would be too noticeable. And I loved the dark places, I was disappointed when I could light up the dark in the catacombs, because that's where the game has its highest tension and atmosphere, after that the game becomes more relaxing. The problem is that by the end it becomes too relaxing, there are big enemies that look menacing, but then we throw something at them and 1/3 of their HP goes down, while they slumber helplessly in our direction. My stats were in disarray, I had no build per se, leveled up my character all crazy, and even so I felt overpowered. We can increase difficulty, but it only affects how much damage we take. If you are used to dispatch enemies from a distance without taking damage, you barely notice a difference from the hardest to the easiest difficulty.
I'd probably fix the notably powerful item by making the light effect he a slow drain on your MP (3 points every 5 seconds and the bolts from the staff take a notable amount of MP (4-5 each shot ).
I personally found the twisted staff to be great up to the halfway point, but there are better ways although it is the easiest way to fight, also it doesn't make much sense how jailer's candle is the same but worse considering it's a late game weapon, too much maze true that, otherwise enjoyable fun game, waiting for dlcs (confirmed)
That White VHS Thing? NA MAN THE FREAKING FINAL E WAS DRAKENGARD X EVANGELION SHIT. I mean i am Uruguayan and here Marihuana is legal, BUT HECK Akuma Kira really smoke something or his mind is at the level of YOKO TARO.
I do find it a bit odd that you acknowledge that the game is an homage to exploration based immersive sims like Shadow Tower and King's field but then say it's unfun because you have to remember the layout of maps and the game is dissapointing because between that and the combat not being excited, the world isn't enjoyable to play through because it's not "touristy" enough. A lot of this review is just contradictions followed by contradictions, but to each there own.
I played just a bit of this game, and it felt really easy. Sure, the atmosphere was right, having played both King's Field and Shadow Tower, but I barely felt punished at all.
