Andy, I would do waterline and below in the blue, the free-board in the yellow. This would give the colour contrast along the lines of anti-foul paint. ;) I'm looking into which brand of the 1 part gel-coat I've used before, if I can find it I'll send you some so you can give it a test yourself. This is the gel-coat I brushed on and left, 1 coat no primer and got a perfect finish with.
I certainly second using two colors, one above the waterline and one below. As a teaching tool, adding a boot stripe, either with vinyl striping or masking and painting would be much appreciated. A problem I've run into, even with wet sanding to remove the mask ridge in the paint, is color migration from a dark stripe into the lighter adjoining paint. Would really like to find how to avoid this.
@@Andrew-lk5ov developing a smooth curve for the color change would be transferable towards creating the boot stripe. If you are on Facebook, Robert Perry wrote up an article about designing a boot stripe for his fan club page. facebook.com/groups/187149054996410/search/?query=BootStripe&epa=SEARCH_BOX
Love your show! Instead of one half yellow and one half blue, can you do a yellow base with a blue stripe from bow to stern and enlarging towards the stern? I’d love to see how to manage the color interface for a sharp and smooth transition. Just a thought!
Thanks to Andy, I painted my 34 Pequod, Flag Blue this fall. Followed everything I've learned on this channel, and I'm 100% happy with my first paint job on a little boat to start with.
Nice episode Andy. You mentioned 2 colors split lengthwise. Maybe consider splitting the colors at the waterline. Would love to learn how you draw in the waterline and process of painting it in. Added bonus for us novices.
Good morning Andy. The the number of spots that needed attention after you applied primer is inversely proportional to your skill with the long board sander. As for color choice, a blue hull and the yellow deck would look far more amazing than a half blue, half yellow hull. I thought your daughter had decided this little boat was not going to end its life as just a paint guinea pig? Maybe she should have the final say on the color. Awesome video as always. Have a great week.
Andy if you are doing the 2 colors can you please show how you mask up and get a good line between the 2. as if one would put on 2 colors on the side. This I feel would be a good tip on bleed through. Maybe a pin stripe to end up the same thickness paint between the blue and yellow lines
When You do the "time lapse" for sanding, etc. it would be interesting to see a running clock to get an idea how long the procedure actually takes....Great videos!!
What about from stern to half way along coming to a point in blue then from there to the in yellow to the bow tip, would look really sexy, also I would just like to say Andy thank you for all you video's, I don't think you realise just how much entertainment you give and just how much you inspire people, I really wanted to change my career to become a shipwright but unfortunately after much research and talking to people around where I live the only boat yards I was advised against it by the very people who work there as the conditions and how they are treated there is NOT very good, so It's personal projects for me lol. Thanks again Andy!
Andy. Thanks for the video. Very informative. I think you should start blue at bow then transition into yellow ‘flames’ then into yellow all the way to the stern. That would look funky!
Love this series, like always your videos are awesome: 2 colors! may I suggest splitting it front half/back half so we can see how the color lays and shines across the keel rather than splitting the keel? As the hull doesn't have chines the keel edge is the nast way we can see how it lays over a sharp edge.
I just finished painting the bottom on my 1988 21' hydra-sports with Alexseal. Same process: 2 coats total fair, 2 coats Alexseal finish primer, 3 coats Alexseal vivid red topcoat, sand the gelcoat first and in between each coat. 3 weeks on my back, sanding and painting. What a job! Was it worth it? You bet it was. Came out FANTASTIC. Looks better than new. Thanks for the vids. they are a great help. I was wondering why you didn't use the rolling additive for the primer. I'm in south Florida and Miguel Afonso from Alexseal was a great help with info for getting the right thinners and the rolling additive. Thanks to all including Andy, Miguel and Lewis Marine
Thanks to you and your videos, I used Alexseal products to paint a boat that was suffering from gelcoat separation all over the hull. Turned out amazing. Tried Awlgrip on another boat with sub standard results. Will be sticking with Alexseal! Cheers!
Just wanted to add another vote for using the two colors to show how to properly create transitions from one color to another. I am currently restoring a Checkmate boat and had originally planned on gelcoating it, but the idea of rolling a paint to produce a similar, if not better, outcome is compelling. Thanks!
Thanks for all the info. Because of your channel, I was able to create some painted floorboards for a Turnabout sailboat (basically a 10' floating bathtub) this summer. I used Petit EZPoxy because it was available in my area, but your channel taught me what to look for and what pitfalls to avoid.
Love your tutorials! Thanks so much. Some times its haed for me to go back and find a subject. Whenever I do, I'm going to say, Hey Andy, what video was that in? I hope it's ok? Glad to see you back.
Definitely Blue, but the half and half would be entertaining (Lol). You should sell it when done so that someone can splash her and the benefit of your work will continue into the future. Thanks for the vid.
I have always wondered if it is OK to overpaint epoxy primer when it is touch dry, or you will have to wait the amount of time it says in manual for given room temperature?
You’ve a very good channel sir, I think. Great layout of informative information about products and the skills to use them correctly. Excellent. The hand on the lens thing is a bit, odd to me. Bit like someone sticking their hand in my face. Not bad necessarily but, odd. Very much looking forward to see this sailer painted up. All the best and thanks for a really great channel. Drew
depends on temps but you want to hold off until the laminating resin is no longer tacky to the touch. Safe bet would be 12 hours but a lot depends on the temps. Warm temps = less wait time
Which of your videos do you suggest I use to help me with the following. I have hairlike cracks in curves of the boat. Thinking like to pull everything off, grind it down, and apply fairing compound, sand it, then apply primer, paint etc, I build my own barn, lean too for horses, and my mini home. But sailboats are a new venture for me so trying restore and give it a girls boat look. Any advice much appreciated.
Andy, curious your thoughts. You say consistent color is important for fairing. Truth, I don’t fair boats but furniture curves etc. I find it to be consistency of sheen with a raking light that makes things easier. Is this what you are after at all, or do you really find color to be an issue?
Good morning. First of all I love the video, has helped me learn a lot about working on my own boat. I would like to ask were I might be able to buy that flexible sanding block?
Hi Andy, I've been a fan since the beginning and I have a question; Why don't you ever spray gel coat as a finish? you always gravitate to paint. I did a ton of research for my current restoration and came to the conclusion that there are no paints formulated for "below-the-waterline-use" or at least there are no paint companies that recommend their products for this use. So I went with gel coat. What's your view?
What grit are you using on this step? How does the Alexaseal fairing compound sand comparedto Total Boat? Planning for Spring projects on the to do list. Great Videos. They have helped a lot. Thank you!
I thought this was your kids boat ? But you said it might never see any water ?? It sure is looking good. I think 2 different colors will look great. It will make it a more modern look. Good luck 👍
Regarding the little sailboat, if you have a video showing how you tapped the water line so perfectly, could you send me a link to the video that shows how that was measured? If you did not do a video on this could you explain how that is done so evenly?
Andy, do you know whether or not these products will work on aluminum boats or on automotive applications? Thanks! Always appreciate your videos and knowledge!!
Remembering my childhood sailing adventures, I would be so excited to sail your “Guinea Pig” sailboat, but maybe more so with a kewl look instead of an experiment...! That said, how about colors of the Blue for the hull, and the Yellow for a trim and boot stipe?
Ok sundays we have Mads Andy and NFL my sundays are complete awesome vid Andy keep it up. That royal blue is going to show imperfections very well so we will see.
I like Jaqui's comment - I'd go blue below the wl and yellow above - and how about a very narrow boot stripe in a bright red? (OK that may be overkill, but.....) - NICE WORK!
Sorry Andy, but this boat MUST see water. It'd be a CRIME not to sail her after you've put in all this work. Great to see you back, hope you and your family are coming through your terrible loss. Best Wishes from the U.K.
Andy, I would do waterline and below in the blue, the free-board in the yellow. This would give the colour contrast along the lines of anti-foul paint. ;)

I like this, but would do the blue topsides.

Agree, the waterline split colours are much interesting as we will learn how to get a perfect waterline👍

Was about to suggest this as well! More practical and esthetically pleasing in my opinion.
Maybe yellow with blue stripe/accenting. The boat is looking great.
Great suggestion. Andy did say his babies may want to use this boat when they get a little older. Shouldn't make it too funky with half and half.
The boat must see water!
So do spend a little time checking the center board slot, the gunnels and transom before the final paint.
I think this is the best RUclips channel about boatworks

Sorry to hear about your mom. You’re show has given me the courage to refit my 1997 Osprey 22 fishing boat. Love you channel

Paint on stern, in opposite of the hull colors, FUNKY boat!
When You do the "time lapse" for sanding, etc. it would be interesting to see a running clock to get an idea how long the procedure actually takes....Great videos!!
This is interesting. I never knew it took so much work to make it right. Thanks

Royal blue with a 2 or 3 inch yellow strip at the water line.

I like the idea of two colors. How about a third color down the middle to show how to blend without having a bump or hard line. Smooth transition
Thanks to you and your videos, I used Alexseal products to paint a boat that was suffering from gelcoat separation all over the hull. Turned out amazing. Tried Awlgrip on another boat with sub standard results.
Will be sticking with Alexseal!
Cheers!
mix the yellow and blue together for green!
Blue topsides and yellow bottom would be my vote!
Love the series. You are an amazing teacher and have wonderful attention to detail. Thank you for all the great content!
I like the colors. Add them anyway you want! Spots, checkers, stripes hey... life is short. Excited to see the paint job 👏
Love the job your doing with this boat!! My vote would be doing the whole bottom in blue with a wide yellow strip along the side. Just my vote.
May I suggest using yellow below the water line - and blue above the water line.
Just wanted to add another vote for using the two colors to show how to properly create transitions from one color to another. I am currently restoring a Checkmate boat and had originally planned on gelcoating it, but the idea of rolling a paint to produce a similar, if not better, outcome is compelling. Thanks!
Nice Job Andy, but I must say that I do agree with some of the comments of painting a blue line stripe and the rest yellow.
So, why are you not doing the bottom of the gunnels or the transom? You know your kids are going to talk you into sailing it!😆
Another vote for making sure we see this thing in the water no matter what the colour!
Thanks for all the info. Because of your channel, I was able to create some painted floorboards for a Turnabout sailboat (basically a 10' floating bathtub) this summer. I used Petit EZPoxy because it was available in my area, but your channel taught me what to look for and what pitfalls to avoid.
Can't wait to see the colors - sounds like it is going to be so fun!
Yellow to blue fade fwd to aft with the roller. I bragged on you and referred several peeps to your channel. Cmon Andy show off them skills! 💪👍
Another brilliant video, I have learnt too much from you, thank you. What it the reason for not painting the transom.
Love your tutorials! Thanks so much. Some times its haed for me to go back and find a subject. Whenever I do, I'm going to say, Hey Andy, what video was that in? I hope it's ok? Glad to see you back.
Yellow and blue sounds great, maybe a green strip down the rabbit line
Andy - You gotta take it out and sail it!! Ha ha!!! That will be so cool like the old Batman TV series, Partridge Family, or The Banana Splits!!
Festool is a great product, been using them for years it all started with the vaccum
Definitely Blue, but the half and half would be entertaining (Lol). You should sell it when done so that someone can splash her and the benefit of your work will continue into the future. Thanks for the vid.
I think it would look ok with the bottom half blue and the top half yellow
Hi Andy,
I wanted to wish you and your sweet family a happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for all you do!!
Blessings,
Doug M.
blue four inches above the waterline all the way round and yellow below 😘

Andy how soon after putting down laminating resin can I cover with waxed gelcoat to help it finish curing
depends on temps but you want to hold off until the laminating resin is no longer tacky to the touch. Safe bet would be 12 hours but a lot depends on the temps. Warm temps = less wait time
This seems like a wonderful opportunity to show easy methods for complex graphics that finish out smooth to the touch. Blue with ornate yellow trim.
What about using the two colors in naval camo?
Right on Andy. Can’t wait for the next stage. ✌️
Looking great Andy!

Am I correct in observing you have gone to paint right after faring? With no gelcoat layer?
What about splitting the color at the waterline?

Would be a pain the ... Camo style blue and yellow?
Paint below water line blue and above yellow ...I think that would look cool ....
Whats the brand of electric long board do you have? Thanks Andy
Good morning. First of all I love the video, has helped me learn a lot about working on my own boat. I would like to ask were I might be able to buy that flexible sanding block?
Hi -- good choice for the colours . Just a thought " what about painting at an angle of one colour ? "
Hi Andy, I've been a fan since the beginning and I have a question; Why don't you ever spray gel coat as a finish? you always gravitate to paint. So Alexseal is the preferred paint rather than Awlgrip?
Why not the transom at the same time ?
Do the yellow with a blue stripe or vise versa.
IF using 302 high build over the fairing compound, would it fill / cover those blemishes and pin holes? How about 303?
Hi, where can I buy the power sanding longboard with the vacuum attachment? What brand is it?
What grit are you using on this step? How does the Alexaseal fairing compound sand comparedto Total Boat? Planning for Spring projects on the to do list. Great Videos. They have helped a lot. Thank you!
I've noticed you haven't paid close attention to the daggerboard trunk edge, just wondering why that is.
so can you gel coat over 3 in one primer ???
Any reason you didn't remove the bow fitting?
As always, awesome work!
can automotive paint be used for color, and follow up with a marine clear coat?
I thought this was your kids boat ? But you said it might never see any water ?? It sure is looking good. I think 2 different colors will look great. It will make it a more modern look. Good luck 👍
I enjoy your videos, very helpful and have you ever pondered the thoughts of maybe having like 3 to 4 day classes to teach hands-on basics?
Yellow topsides. Blue below the waterline.
Regarding the little sailboat, if you have a video showing how you tapped the water line so perfectly, could you send me a link to the video that shows how that was measured? If you did not do a video on this could you explain how that is done so evenly?
How bad of idea would it be to use the R4042 Reducer instead of the R5015? In Canada here, having a hard time getting R5015.
Andy, do you know whether or not these products will work on aluminum boats or on automotive applications? Thanks! Always appreciate your videos and knowledge!!
Do a video on lousy 80's and 90's and on Bayliner, Maxxum et al in that category stringer and transom and replacement. Like any Bayliner built.
How about a blue bottom with yellow around the gunnels.
You should paint the bow yellow and the stern blue with a cool angle in the middle.
Remembering my childhood sailing adventures, I would be so excited to sail your “Guinea Pig” sailboat, but maybe more so with a kewl look instead of an experiment...! That said, how about colors of the Blue for the hull, and the Yellow for a trim and boot stipe?
Oh yeah! Lookin’ great Andy!🔥🔥🔥🇺🇸
You must go and sail it. Fall in love with the water again
I wonder does the weight of the boat change and do You have to count that change somehow?
Ok sundays we have Mads Andy and NFL my sundays are complete awesome vid Andy keep it up. That royal blue is going to show imperfections very well so we will see.

Hi - how many rollers did you use. If more then one - the reason for the change.
David
Blue with yellow pinstripes, please. One yellow pinstripe 2 inches wide and another one 4 inches wide.
Always helpful. Thanks.
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your sandpaper for the Flexisander boards? Direct from their website or different supplier?
Yellow !!!!!
Paint the bottom blue, above water line yellow
It would be nice if the darker color side had the lighter color stripe and vice versa on the other side.... just a thought. Cheers
Yellow please 😁!
Rainbow colors
You could do a dazzle camo pattern :p
