- After taking a 5 month hiatus from fishing the surf, I'm back! (yeah there was that whole Hakarl Challenge, but that didn't count lol). It was a quiet morning until I made one quick modification to my presentation that changed everything. Watch to see what lit up the lines and finally put fish on the plate.

Nice catch there man. Thanks for the long rig tip. Keep the videos coming.
Hell yeah! Thanks for the video. Always a good way to spend my break! Takes me away for lil while then it's back to reality
right on bro, happy to entertain🤙
Yeah! Fishing to feed the family always feels good. Also, Katherine is awesome- good to see a knowledgeable woman in her element 🙂
she's a pro!
I tried that looooooooooong leader mod and caught my limit with 2 hours! This is a game changer! Thank you!
boom! you're welcome😁
Good Job. Never would have thought a leader that long, I’ll try it next time !
it worked! give it a shot👍
I went back and watched this. Man I miss fishing out here with you guys. I had a lot of fun fishing with you Ish. We fished the Bay and lots of Surf spots, I regret we never got a chance to bottom fish some Lings together.
been waiting!good to see you
Awesome man, love watching your surf vids! Solid day!
thx Chris! still need to get you out here one day. and vice versa, now that i have a kayak and i need to visit you soon too👍🏽
That’s a super cool idea with that changing tent. Game changer
yeah this changing tent is super convenient! great for the yak vids too cause im usually pulling a sticky wetsuit off in front of beach tourists lol. as far as comped gear, top 5 useful things i've ever gotten.
lol can’t believe I missed this one! Ha! I literally search for the latest surf perch vids. Especially awesome cause it’s with ish and Katherine! My buddy Bobby uses a 6’ leader and most people think that’s long! I definitely think it helps because the flow is so natural!
I sub'd to ur channel a couple of weeks ago without new content... I'm a fan, and especially because you and ur girl are out there doing it large!! 2 Thumbs Up!!!
thx man! haha she's not the mrs, just another badass surf angler that shows me what's up!
Love all that surf information , otherwise I have no ideal what you’re talking about since I don’t surf fish
Thanks for the tip bro!
Nice Ish. In Hawaii you whip with a longer leader for more sensitive fish. Good to know it works with perch as well
yup very true, np man👍
Outstanding! Congrats
Epic dramatic intro ha! I hope to head up in your area soon maybe one day I can link up with you awesome video like always and KEEP FISH'N ON! One more week till kayak season opens!!!!
i want a legal yak ling so bad!👏👏🙏
@@ishwithfish me too I was 1 inch short last year
Way to go Katherine!
Great vid Ish! Loved the intro! Let's get out fishing soon!
sup kevin! whoa good timing, just emailed you before i saw this. yes let's!
Nice catch... Better dust off the Hobie. Next Monday is rockfish opener and I will be there! Get some!
Wow that is a ridiculous leader 😂 I’m gonna give it a try up here in WA! I normally keep my Carolina rig leaders at 2-3 feet, but mostly settle for a high low rig with gulp sand worms and shrimp
i thought the same lol, but after no bites i tied a longass leader real quick and boom, finally got on them. fishing, man.
Tbh you have to play it by ear. Sometimes long leaders work and sometimes short ones do, just have to try and see what is working that moment
Nice me and my brother were up at gold beach today and caught 5 redtail perch
Katherine hooked me up with an ultralight rod and reel that I could fit in my Harley saddlebags. She gave me some cool tips and I have been slaying the perch with it. People snicker when I pull the little thing out, but when I start pulling in the pigs they start asking questions. Tell her thanks for me! Don't know where she went once that store closed
yeah, she was a slayer! she ended up moving to the east coast😞
Gonna have to try a long leader next time I’m out. So far I’m 0 for 3 trying to catch a surf perch.
Your leader should be as long as your rod.. Lol.. Nice.. Gotta try this on the surf..!!
Kayaking anytime soon..? I picked up a tandem one for me and my girl to enjoy on the weekends.. But the second seat is really to hold my crab gear.. 👊😉
haha nice! yeah with rockfish opener around the corner, i hope to drop pots and fish soon🤞🏻 i'll let you know when i head out next?
@@ishwithfish Yeah man.. Hit me..
Kayak&Cook..? I'm in the mood for sushi..
Dude, you probably let those perch grow bigger in 5 months and then you go get them...pretty smart! Lol
Fun vid. Now you spilled the beans on what once was a well kept secret. I guess I wont be telling you any juicy tips. (Heavy sigh), :) Tight lines my friend.
sup man! ah my bad, i was excited to share my success. tight lines my man👍
@@ishwithfish I am going out this Saturday to fish the cliffs or the beach. Still undecided. So many decisions one has to make. Your more than welcome to come along. Tight Lines.
ah thx man, got family in town visiting. i might me able to sneak away to the pier for a bit, we'll see.
Miss eating these just regular seasoned flour and fry after save the oil you fried your fish in chop some onions and saute medium heat, add a little soyu a little fish sauce of your liking and when onions are transparent its ready poor over fish with a little fine chopped green onions with a bowl of steam rice and hot kimchi youll be on your way to heaven
dang sounds great🤤
Nice fish Ish! Good to see you fishing on the beach again! Keep up the hard work Katherine! Now you have that VR50 to fish your own Ninja style surf fishing!😁
hi vlad! yup she's all ninja'd up😁
Nice catch and awesome video. What is your favorite way of cooking your fish? There's steamed, fried, beer batter, sauteed and grilled.
with surfperch, i clean scale slit salt and sit overnight, pan fry next day. the meat is notoriously mushy, but salting draws out a lot of moisture overnight and gives it the consistency of trout. i like pan frying cause that's what i grew up on, takes me back😁
@@ishwithfish that's good to know. I'm going to try surf fishing for the first time soon and I want to try grilling it first. What's a good beach to try out for perch and stripers?
Nice
Yes , real Instead of swing for the fence. I learned that on my last trip out. If you jerk hard you'll loose a lot of fish.
@ish with fish were can i hook up surf perch like this im coming from sacramento been skunking for 3 weekends now man any help would be appreciated i try baker beach and bogdaga bay area do i got to go more north on tje coast or south
Nice catch! Thanks for the info on beach reading, it's very helpful! Btw, do you have a name or a link for the finger glove that you're using? Thanks
thx! if you look on ebay "neoprene casting glove" you'll see them. def recommended for casting braid👍
Nice Ish. She knows..
My name is Daniel and my last name starts with Ish, My nickname is Fish and I love fishing. I just found this channel and Thank you Sir! Brother from another mother.
right on man, thx for representing!😁
@@ishwithfish born and raised on the southern end of the NC outer banks, Keep up the good work.
Hey Ish, I really enjoyed your surf perch video. Do you mind dropping your set up? From what size weight and size hook? I plan on heading up to SF next week. Thanks bro Mahalo!
sup man, i list gear info lower left corner of vid as i go through setups. basically 1 to 2oz egg weight with size 6 baitholder hook and gulp 2" camo sandworm👍🏼
Dope intro bro 👍🏽🤙🏽
thx man. kinda over the top but i felt inspired :)
I do t know why I'm intrigued with the watch you have on .... I like how big it is ... what kinda what are you wearing
it's just a gopro wrist remote😁
Please tell us where that place is
Is this along Cabrillo hwy?
Nice man! Just noticed you drive a Golf R/GTI! You got it tuned? I've got a MK7 Gti tuned and these little hatchbacks are fast. Also man they're great for fishing lol. Glad to see more videos too.
that badass thing is actually katherine's😁 she tracks it too. nearly crapped my waders on the drive there lol
Nice catch, where is this at ??
How does it work in Cali when you gut hook an undersized fish? There is no size limit in WA
supposed to cut the line as close to hook as possible and release fish. non stainless hook supposedly deteriorates in a few days.
Using that heavy of a Trifecta I would think more of a striper rig. Does the surf require it?
Nice video!
i use it for stripers mainly, actually i just caught a 24" with this setup. nice thing is it's light and sensitive enough for small perch presentations too.
Great rods..... versatility is key.
where is this?
Sharp looking wading boots. Are those converse?
haha yup, just some cheap Levi's chucks imitations. an og recommended them since they grip mossy rocks well. he was right👍 downside is they don't flush sand out at all so you gotta strap them tight.
What line were you using for leader. Mines always gets tangled up
i like 20lb kastking fluorokote. norcal perch and striper aren't very line shy.
Awesome how you were highlighting points of interest. Btw, you keep saying “dude” to the person next to you. Is that correct?
cool thx! yeah i call everyone dude😁
Hahaha in NorCal everyone and everything, including inanimate objects, is “dude.” 😄
So what's a good minimum size for most surf perch? Besides redtails.
imo only 12"+ surfperch are worth keeping. the 2 fillets from one fish are big enough for one person👍
which beach is this at.
You know what would be a great challenge video, is artificial baits against each other. Gulp vs Fishbites vs another type. Obviously there are many factors involved, but see if you can like for like compare flavours when targeting a certain species, such as perch.
good idea!
How much weight do you have to chuck it out there?
i use 2 oz egg weights
Casting an 8ft leader on a carolina rig sounds brutal! Can't imagine getting much distance on it if there's any kind of onshore wind. Did it tangle on you much?
hi P! 0 tangles, i was completely surprised by how effective it was. casting def takes a hit by about 20%, but with perch you're not casting far anyways.
When you’re casting a 1-2 oz sinker on a 9’ rod how could you not get distance?
Gotcha, yeah I suppose you're right that if there's a hole 10-30ft out, it's not a big problem. Glad to see you out on the surf again!
Hey man, not sure if you’ll see this since the video’s a little old, but does having this long of a leader affect your casting at all? I would think casting a Carolina rig with an 8-9’ leader would be very awkward.
it is a little harder to cast that your usual 3-4' leader, but then again the strike zone is usually within 20yds from you, so distance doesn't matter too much.
Ish With Fish Good to know! I go to a couple beaches where you have to cast a bit farther, due to the weird shape of the breaks, but I think the longer leader will be good even there. Might even try that approach when trout fishing next time 😂
Nice 👍
Didn’t know you have phenix🤔
i don't :) it's on loan from john, he wanted me to try it out. i really like it, the 1-6 oz range is so versatile.
Ish With Fish
oh I see
Really that was 1-6oz it looks light to me.
yeah the med power. i like the action on it vs my battalion.
Ish With Fish you have officially caught more perch on that rod than I have! Well, I may have more micro perch but keepers, yeah! 😜
1 to 6 oz rating rod.isn't that kinda like a broom stick for perch..I use a Phoenix trifecta 9'6" 1/4 to 3/4 rating and its perfect for perch....
Show us the tender loin on the pearch
I thought the new law says that you can’t use leader longer than 6ft anymore? Or is it still legal for salt water?
sup, 90% sure leader lengths are freshwater rule only.
I like the smaller ones better when eating whole.
Hey... where were you fishing?
San Mateo beaches. Start in half moon bay and go south. If you hit Pigeon Point, you went too far. All the beaches have perch. You just have to find the hole.
i haven't anything caught in a while here in santa cruz
sorry man, keep it up, you'll find them👍
Dude! Where did you get the waterproof Chucks at?
haha they're not waterproof :) but these have lasted in the surf for 2 years and still going strong. i wear them because an og told me they're cheap way to grip slippery rocks and decent arch support in sand. he was right!
@@ishwithfish do you wear special socks with them since you are fishing in the cold NorCal waters?
I wear stockingfoot waders, they have a neoprene foot that keeps me warm and dry (affiliate link if you're interested: Frogg Toggs Hellbender II amzn.to/2JH47Mc)
we need to see underwater action.
i tried it once but i think i spooked the fish. hard on a Carolina rig.
Saludos a migo
Where is this at what state???
norcal bay area👍🏼
are you using a Carolina rig?
yup!
Imma catch my pb on a 20’ leader
haha believe and anything is possible🙌
quite a slope to that beach..
and pheonex rods are spendy
Bleed it out right away, then put on ice.
Show the fishes tender loin
I don't think that was the reason the fish turned on, fish are not very smart.
First!
Show the fishes tenderloin
Video are incredibly
Lol 80ft leader
Cast just 30 feet
Don’t cast to far
35 feet in front of you
Why would you fish on top of somebody else's fish be courteous and fish the area after those people leave the area
if you're referring to the beginning of the video, im referring to guys we walked way past. hopefully our courtesy is obvious.
@Hank Chinaski ooo lol welp guilty as charged i guess?🤣 part of the fun of buddy fishing is chatting and leap frogging and catching together. if somebody expected that much space i prob wouldn't fish with them.
Nice
