Yeah, honestly I don’t think the class choices thematically fit the character, I would have gone with a Wizard(Transmutation)/Warlock(Celestial)/Fighter(Eldritch Knight): Alchemy is clearly Intelligence-based so I can’t use Sorcerer to represent it, Summon Weapons is already a spell so I don’t need Hexblade, but since meeting Truth/God/Universe is a big part of his backstory I can’t leave Warlock aside, finally I need Fighter for obvious reasons

@Hunter Edep I mean the 14th level is kind of clutch. But the 6th level is fine, if you have the Transmutation spells ready when you need to change the effect. The 10th level is kind of eh, wizards get so many spells getting 1 more for free is neat but not great.
@Hunter Edep And actually, they kind of refuse to use the Stone when they finally find it, so it sort of makes sense not to go that route in the build.
Thanks for putting Naofumi on the poll. I'd be so excited to see how you'd do a purely defensive character (with a rage mode?) I love guts, but I hope Naofumi would be really interesting mechanically.
Here's a challenging build for you: The Knight, from Hollow Knight. Have fun figuring out how to recreate a nimble, sword-swinging, spell-slinging undead bug boi in D&D.
Since he is an alchemist, he really should be either a transmutation wizard or alchemist artificer. Although its difficult to use a pike with a dex / intelligence build (why going charisma hexblade fits), i feel going a split between Eldritch Knight and School of Transumation will give u the most elric feel
About the calligraphy skill... I have a masters degree in librarianship and library science and while studying, I took classes in calligraphy (I write poems, short stories and D&D-scenarios for my campaigns). I have been writing with a fountain ink pen for my entire life, so calligraphy seemed a natural next step for me. I must admit that I find it very soothing to do calligraphy. You have to focus your mind to do it correctly and that on itself is very soothing and calming. So, yeah, calligraphy rocks! Nice build voor Edward, by the way! :) And I do wonder how one would make Armstrong...
I’d be down for Gon Freecs or Guts from Beserk. I’m guessing some kind of rogue monk scout open hand for Gon, and a Barbarian Fighter for Guts What I really wanna see is Asta from Black Clover: I wanna know how to build a fighter that can utterly shut down mages PS Ed is a halfling Al is a Warforged
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Barbarian for sure, this is Guts. From *Berserk* . But I would, and bear with me, also hook him up with some levels of Rogue, because he is good with a literal hand-crossbow and his arm cannon is certainly a big surprise for any monsters. Could also use something to explain the Brand and the way unnatural creatures are drawn to him...
@@SentiNel090 Hear me out here...multiclass Barbarian/Paladin. I actually have a story about prestigitation. We were a level 1 party and there were some rats in a dungeon we were in but behind open doors, and our warlock used that to close the doors so instead of fighting 4 rats at a time we fought 1 at a time. There was loot in the nests so we opened the door and the dm gave me (a paladin the party tank) a free attack. That was such a cool moment. So yeah it's a good spell.

Ok, I do want to point out that the Hexblade gives Medium armor and Shields as a subclass feature, meaning it still adds in even if you don't get the light armor of the class, so your AC could be pretty solid for a caster. I know this may not fit with Ed's aesthetic (and that boy is all about his aesthetic) but mechanically it's hard to pass up. Also, with Quicken spell, Action Surge, and Agonizing blast you have one of the best offensive builds in the game almost completely on accident
@@floydthegreninja4031 Two very different interpretations of "alchemist." Let's be fair- what the finalized Alch can do, and what Ed does are vastly different.
Will we see other anime characters such as Eren Jaeger and Deku (Deku has stopped hurting himself with his quirk using his new kick centered shoot style) Edit:: 12, this I'd the most likes I've ever had,. Thanx
Hey, spoilers. But umm.... Deku would probably be some sort of Monk? Open hand gets to push, which doesn't really feel DETROIT SMASH level, but could be close.
about the AC: all that multiclassing gives Ed here proficiency in medium armor, as well as all those weapons we don't need. Now, having 16 in DEX gives Ed a +3 AC. The best armor for this would be the light armor of Studded Leather, granting 13+DEX, which is exactly the same as Mage Armor. However, Mage Armor east up a spell slot, actual armor doesn't, so it's personal preference. Regardless, don't forget that the Shield spell bumps your AC by 5 regardless of any pre-existing modifiers, so you can have that sweet AC 20 until your next turn, for whenever Scar gets too close for comfort. As for actual shields, they bumps your AC by 2, also ignoring other modifiers, for a base AC of 17. However, this will cost you the +2 damage you'd get from the Dueling fighting style, as well as the free hand you'd need for spells. So maybe don't use shields.
Great video, didn't think it was going to be that in depth to replicate the mechanics of his abilities. I just wanted to comment a bit more on the roleplay side of things. Just story wise I'd say he started as a Lore Master Wizard. The Sorcerer fits better with the shounen protagonist archetype that one day discovers he has mysterious powers, and then he becomes proficient in using them with relatively little trouble. Though I agree that mechanically the sorcerer is just more flexible. Edward is crazy smart and a prodigy who studied hard and really understands what he's doing. Then things get mixed up with the Truth, which does sound a lot like a warlock pact. Mechanically hex blade fits best again, but lore wise might be the seeker, though it's almost a reverse. Instead of procuring knowledge for a boon, Edward pays a steep price for knowledge. Back to the Lore Master. The Lore Master has incredibly fitting talents. Doubled proficiency bonus for all knowledge skills that he is proficient in. And his initiative in combat can be determined by his wits, rather than his pure agility. Spell Secrets: an ability that allows a wizard to change the nature of spells. There's even a separate paragraph to elaborate how this would work on the roleplay side of things. In Edward's case, he gets this passively via the truth that just teaches him better ways of performing alchemy, and actively when he understands from seeing how Scar uses alchemy. He literally breaks alchemy down to the individual steps and figures out how to alter the basic formula to make it work in the way he desires. Alchemical casting: (lol) aside from the name, it's pretty much what I described above. Changing the basic formula. Prodigious Memory: This one's not that similar in mechanics, but just the name describes his character pretty well. He knows his stuff. I feel like this is important to mention with this particular character.
Some fun mechanical facts for this build that might help: 1. Two-handed weapons dont prevent you from having a free hand to do somatic components. Youre still considered to have one hand free in that case. 2. Pact weapons always benefit from Hexblade's Charisma substitution, even if they normally dont meet the requirements (so Hexbow or Hexglaive are kosher, as long as theyre your pact weapons). 3. Great Weapon Fighting is actually not a terrible fighting style, allowing your big-dice polearms to average higher. Conclusion: Ed's proclivity towards spears/glaives is actually pretty easy to do without changing much. Plus, if you roll well, and have extra ASIs to spare, you have shit like GWM and Polearm Master as options.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Whoa! I wasn't expecting attention from the creator himself! The next most obvious characters to do would be Al (pretty similar to Ed, but a warforged & probably more strength than dex), Mustang (any kind of fire spellcaster), Winry (artificer, obviously), & Armstrong (mostly str fighter, maybe barbarian or monk, with a level or two for some minor spellcasting). I cannot overstate how happy I am an important person noticed me.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the EXACT type of play style I'm looking for! Maybe with control over fire instead of earth though. edit: Also I would LOVE to see a Doom-slayer build, That would be AWESOME!!!!.

I just played a level 8 version of this build in a oneshot two days ago (tho with a few edits to the spell list to make sure I had more alchemy-like stuff at only lvl8) and it was really fun! Using lots of Mold Earth to set up the area for our fight with the monster to our advantage was really handy, and the fight went really well with the help of Eldritch Blast, sorcery points, as well as the two spells I mentioned editing in myself (Maximillian's Earthen Grasp which I put into one of the the empty spell slots left from the warlock levels, and Erupting Earth that I replaced Counterspell with (there was no use in having 1 lvl in fighter so the build I used was sorc 5, warlock 3)). I wish I could've had a chance to use the weapons from Pact of the Blade/Hexblade, but for this fight (and this level) it was better for me to stay back. It was still a good time tho and I even managed to intimidate some nosey locals into leaving us alone when our characters were leaving near the end XD. I'll deffo use this build again in the future for other oneshots, and maybe even use an edited/reflavored version of it for an entire campaign because who knows how long my ASD brain will be in fma mode. Thank you so much for this cool build, Tulok!
Great work! The Fighter levels are better than my home pitch, which was Kensei Monk. Only 2 questions: 1) You used Unearth Arcana before. Why not Stone Sorcerer? It focusing on Cons, you grant high HP and AC 2) Have you considered Creation and Disintegrate from the Sorcerer spell list, flavour wise?
Came here after watching Alphonse. Admittedly I would have made his fighting style great weapon fighting as Edward's go to transmutation for melee combat are polearms and his arm blade. The armblade is a weapon that he kinda uses to enhance his punches, he never does much complicated with it. With polearms however, we've seen him straight up monk with them. But having that would need warcaster or use sorcery points everytime you cast a spell so it's not the most optimal choice.
I know this video is old, but I just want to add that the Clockwork Soul Sorcerer Subclass and the Transmuted Spell Metamagic that were released in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are a perfect fit here.
@ModernXShinobi Clockwork Soul Sorcerer has 10 extra spells due to their feature Clockwork Magic, the best part of this feature is that you can replace those spells for others from the Abjuration and most importantly Transmutation school, which goes hand in hand with the theme of Edward Elric. A few nice spells you can have that I think fit the concept and are actually useful spells are for example Transmute Rock, Erupting Earth, Fabricate and Stone Shape.
The official artificer could also work. You can make alphonse with the steel defender if you dont have a buddy to play the warforge for you. Additional some multiclassing for certain transmutation spells would help.

Tbh, Transmutation Wizard is more suitable to Hohenheim
Thanks for putting Naofumi on the poll. I'd be so excited to see how you'd do a purely defensive character (with a rage mode?) I love guts, but I hope Naofumi would be really interesting mechanically.
Here's a challenging build for you:
The Knight, from Hollow Knight.
Have fun figuring out how to recreate a nimble, sword-swinging, spell-slinging undead bug boi in D&D.
Maybe an Undying Pact of the Blade Warlock as a base? Not sure if we have any bug race options.
@@josephperez2004
Pact of the Undying was my thought for a base. I guess halfling might have to do for a race.
2:42 to turn an ice cream truck into a pork truck
Since he is an alchemist, he really should be either a transmutation wizard or alchemist artificer. Although its difficult to use a pike with a dex / intelligence build (why going charisma hexblade fits), i feel going a split between Eldritch Knight and School of Transumation will give u the most elric feel
You're confusing flavour and mechanics.
Finally, a person with culture
I’d be down for Gon Freecs or Guts from Beserk. I’m guessing some kind of rogue monk scout open hand for Gon, and a Barbarian Fighter for Guts
What I really wanna see is Asta from Black Clover: I wanna know how to build a fighter that can utterly shut down mages
PS Ed is a halfling Al is a Warforged
Not a bad idea!
His entire existence revolves around being pursued by and slaying all manner of undead and demons, and his sword exists partially on another plane which allows him to deal additional damage to these enemies (kind of like he's Smiting them)
For Gon, Scout Rogue makes a lot of sense but when it comes to Monk, I would say Way of the Sun Soul fits better (considering his Nen).
"Creatures made out of inorganic material, like Barry the Chopper" *Shows the Slicer*
Joseph Joestar: how would you incorporate Hamon with Hermit Purple?
Astral Self monk probably. It's basically a Stand subclass.
Also, some divination magic for the spirit photos
Tulok the Barbrarian the interesting question is, how would you tackle Joseph? Young, old or a mix? His fighting style and abilities change A LOT
I really wish you have a version of this for Pathfinder
Make it! Seriously, copy my whole shtick, let me know when it's up I'll plug it next time someone asks!
Linguist feat would be a good fit for ED, since he has presumably good grasp on languages and *he spefically uses and breaks encryption in the anime, like all alchemists on the show*
I'm suprised you didn't grab Transmute Rock as a spell.
Alas, it's for Druid, Wizard, and Artificer only.
@@nightxsabbath son of a bitch! If i was dm, i'd let them take the spell if they wanted to. They went out of theit way to do something interesting, i can throw them a bone.

Change the race to warforge
Boom Alfonzo
But can we get a Jareth the goblin king build
Love the recognition of the OP calligraphy skills
go for "The Rising of a Shield Hero". It's one the best anime I have seen in a while.
Last place I expected to hear Randy Newman's "Short People"
Its actually the second time I've used that song...
So does that mean that Alphonse Elric is a Warforged?
Seems like a likely choice.
Technically yes, outside of being allowed to roll up an Animated Armor
I thought you were joking about battle master fighter. 10/10 will never doubt again.
I feel like there is a story behind that calligraphy proficiency that you aren't telling us.
Uh, calligraphy is amazing. End of story.
Oh I come for the builds but I stay for the puns and calligraphy. 😂 Really though love your work keep it up
In the campaign I'm in I literally did a naofumi like character.
Finally! My favorite anime gets some spotlight! Awesome build!

Good job yet again! Keep it up and I can’t wait to see your next video.
Hey thanks! It's a little bit malicious...
Question, when did calligraphers tools become a -joke- reference on the channel
I actually made Ed as a 3.5 character! A transmuter, and I made alphonse as a war forged. It was a ton of fun
When the D&D announced the Artificer class
This Video: *AM* *I* *A* *JOKE* *TO* *YOU*
The fact that you called hoenheim "a thousand souls squeezed into a sausage casing" made me like the vid
Can you do Howl from “howl’s moving castle” please!!!!!
Omg. Didn't realize that's 12 beams of 1d10+5 with action surge. And 8 beams on up to 11 turns. Holy crap.
Okay, I'm really starting to get curious about your fixation on the Calligraphy skill. What is up with that?
Yea I'd like to know as well lol. Im still new to D&D is there something I'm missing?
Shiro523 it’s the best tool.
@@Alphadog2064 really? What makes it so useful?
I respect this episode solely on the premise you watched the canon story line Brotherhood. Great job.

@@thenuggernaut9084 though there's the alchemist subclass of artificer

Let's be fair- what the finalized Alch can do, and what Ed does are vastly different.
This was my second anime (I’ve only seen 3 lol) and man was it awesome.
Will we see other anime characters such as Eren Jaeger and Deku (Deku has stopped hurting himself with his quirk using his new kick centered shoot style)
Edit:: 12, this I'd the most likes I've ever had,. Thanx
Hey, spoilers. But umm.... Deku would probably be some sort of Monk? Open hand gets to push, which doesn't really feel DETROIT SMASH level, but could be close.
I think Way of the Four Elements Monk would fit better in a Deku build. One for All alows the user to punch so hard that the air does damage.
I wont spoil it but i would just wait until the end of the series for deku he will have a lot more to work with for a more creative build in dnd
Still waiting for the Giorno build
@@gabeuscus13 Bard with everything dumped into Perform Piano.
Good to see someone else acknowledges the importance of calligraphy
Go new artificer, take alchemist, name your character "full metal". Done. Fixed your build yw B^))))))))))
New artificer is... so not Ed. But I know you're just playing
about the AC: all that multiclassing gives Ed here proficiency in medium armor, as well as all those weapons we don't need.
Yeah, he's sort of a glass canon support fighter? It's a weird build, but could be fun
Vic Mignona did nothing wrong, the sjw who accused him is a convict mad at him for not signing her ugly fanart.
Some fun mechanical facts for this build that might help:
Now I want to see builds for other major FMA characters, and have a game where everyone plays one.
That would be super fun! I'll look into doing more if this is a hit, I wont have to binge watch the whole series next time, so it could go faster.

-Fighter 3 (Great Weapon Fighting, Monster Hunter)
-Barbarian 17 (Zealot)

Thanks, now I have another backup character :D Would you do Balsa (Seirei no moribito) or Ksuriuri (Mononoke) sometime in future?
I’ve waited so long for this video! I also most want to cry 😢
Great work! The Fighter levels are better than my home pitch, which was Kensei Monk.
Only 2 questions:
1) You used Unearth Arcana before. Why not Stone Sorcerer? It focusing on Cons, you grant high HP and AC
2) Have you considered Creation and Disintegrate from the Sorcerer spell list, flavour wise?
Creation isn't obeying the Equivalent Exchange rule yo! And Disintegrate would be a good call, shatter being the only offensive spell is... sad.
I think doing the Four Cardinal Heroes from Shield Hero would be awesome. Imagine someone basing their party off of those. Super interesting concept!
I love this so much. FullMetal Alchemist is my favourite thing ever.
I'm actually trying his build-out verbatim. Any tips for how to incorporate those new elements from Tasha's?
@ModernXShinobi Clockwork Soul Sorcerer has 10 extra spells due to their feature Clockwork Magic, the best part of this feature is that you can replace those spells for others from the Abjuration and most importantly Transmutation school, which goes hand in hand with the theme of Edward Elric. A few nice spells you can have that I think fit the concept and are actually useful spells are for example Transmute Rock, Erupting Earth, Fabricate and Stone Shape.
Subbed. In love with this series now!!!
The official artificer could also work. You can make alphonse with the steel defender if you dont have a buddy to play the warforge for you. Additional some multiclassing for certain transmutation spells would help.
"How to play speedwagon (from part 1)" please bruh we need it
Also a rogue/bard multiclass would be the way to go
