Understanding judo deeply requires significant time, but the greater challenge lies in translating this theoretical knowledge into practical skill. Continuous training and working with diverse partners are essential for applying learned concepts, enhancing the ability to recognize and exploit ideal positions during randori. For example, kuzushi is often misunderstood as a movement by the attacker to destabilize the opponent. In reality, it refers to the ideal position of the opponent, regardless of its cause, whether due to a defensive flaw, an offensive error, or another factor that renders them vulnerable.
Enjoyed this concept, and enjoyed getting to watch the masters of these techniques! Sometimes, when I watch people like Inoue (or really anyone at the international level), it's hard to even process that people exist in any sport who can execute movements with as much skill, grace, power, and speed as they do! I get the same feeling watching high-level boxers and wrestlers as well.
Great analysis Chadi. I am still amazed with Kimura's osoto gari, i watch the japanese documentary, they explained why his osoto is so devastating is also because his hand act like a punching down movement that adds to the power that cause concussions
For newaza/shime waza: Euan Burton. Check '07 World Championship. For yoko tomoe nage, ashi waza and a sutemi waza from ude garami/'Kimura' lock: Inchul Cho. The best drop seioe nage the judoka from G.B. in '07 World Judo Championship. See him in the Fighting Films highlights. Cheers.
Hey Chadi I have a special request, hope you give it some thought. Or least give me your advice nevertheless. As a judoka, there's a time when judo pushes you so hard it literally stops being fun, the mat start to look like a tuture cell and honestly you can quit. Lord knows I did for a couple months after experiencing an intense summer training camp (it was hell) and I think I was sick and bruised like many of my team mates at the end of it. How do you convince yourself back to the mat?
Take some time off from hard training, find something that reminds you of what you enjoy about Judo. In my case i go teach a group of young ones, it always reminds me of the beauty of the sport and principles of the Art. competition is a big part of the sport but it is not the only part. hope this helps.
It really depends on who you're training with, if it's a toxic environment, no sportsmanship and trainers giving you destructive criticism, you should leave. Many times i got my body destroyed but i was so happy cause i was being encouraged and pushed through my limits
No small techniques? These are especially interesting because of the differnt setup. You are right that the technique itself more or less look the same but for example the japanese team all have this 'bail out' ouchi with the grip over the back which I find very inovative and so on...
Chadi, really enjoy this presentation. I also have something for you. I remember watching this Judoka fight in the earliest Ultimate Fight Challenge in early 1990s, when it was only available on VHS due to the violence. He even fought Royce Gracie and Marco Ruas, two legendary fighters. He had good punch defense cause Judo defending against gi grabs isn't much different from parrying punches. ruclips.net/video/XatoC6ZQU10/видео.html
Very interesting concept. That was very good.

You could make this a series: Best of each Throw, per event, per year, etc.
