David Brown has been gone from Canada for 40 years yet you still see them working on farms to this day. They were and always will be the toughest tractors ever made
I know of lots of these tractors that were abused then people would complain about the hydralics never mind that they set out in the rain snow ect and got water in the system! But really if you gave them regular maintenance oil changes on time filters changed as per factory instructions they will out last any thing out on the market they were kind of old school but easy on fuel better cold weather starting than anything I've ever seen!someone said they were the best tractor made !I don't know if they were the best but as for me the 990s were the best in thier class great machines for sure I don't know why they stopped making them my dad got one new in 1965 and my brother still uses it today ,one guy I know said if they all lasted like that one no wonder the factory never sold many maybe they were to good! Come to think of it farmers tend to keep running what works and are not prone to buy a new tractor untill the old one wears out, they don't care about keeping up with the Joneses !
Several of my neighbors have or had David brown tractors ,I always felt they were the most reliable best made tractors ever to be made my dad bought a new 990 selectamatic in 65 my brother has the farm now and still falls back on old Davey when the newer stuff fails it used to do all the plowing for 25 years, now more or less hay making duties it's got 9600 plus hours on it never been overhauled but did have good maintainace on it is oil and filters at regular intervals
Spent three weeks at factory winter of 62/63 on engine and transmission course snow up to your eye brows craftsmen built tractors !!!shame we lost them
We have a David Brown 1212 (1976 model) and a David Brown 1412 (1975 model). The 1212 has over 13,000 hours on it, and the 1412 has over 15,000 hours on it.Both tractors run excellent with no major repairs, except for batteries, tires, lights, etc. My neighbour says that the only reason we don't have any major problems with them, is because we always change the oil and filters when they should be changed. We also make sure that no water ever gets into the transmission and hydraulic oil, by keeping the shifter boots in good condition. The hydraulics have always worked excellent on both tractors. We have owned Massey Ferguson, Ford, International, and John Deere in the past, and other than the MF 35 diesel, we hated every Massey Ferguson, Ford, International, and John Deere that we have ever owned, because even though we gave them excellent maintenance, they were not as reliable as the David Browns. So, we have found, that if a David Brown tractor is given excellent maintenance, there is no other tractor as reliable, as a David Brown.
